But no, man...it's the movies and TV shows and video games and rap music. Cuz you know people can't just be born fucked up...it's got to be something else's fault.
A lot of good your observations are doing now, dude.
Sorry man, I believe in Tablula Raza (clean slate) at birth. The values that society places on many things propogates fucked up people. Depression is linked to societal materialism and ideology. If we have no value system, much like animals, there won't be a rampage, nor would there be depression.
Everyone has to take into account how they treat people because humans are unpredictable. Everyone I come in contact I treat as an aquaintance and at least try to say something to help better their day because there's always some fuckhead who wants to make their day worse. Often times we forget how volatile people are.

I don't have the facts, so I try to refrain from formulating too many beliefs... That said, I suspect that some people could be just born nutty. People are born with physical abnormalities and even mental deformities. Parallel to that, one might reasonably expect that people could be born with some hormones or chemicals messed up in their heads and that it might pre-dispose them to be psychopaths... Societal factors certainly seem to play a big role...but I wouldn't just assume away the possibility of natural deformities as well.

Understandably so, however in this case, it was more of depression and anger toward society as opposed to being 'mental'. Everyone has issues, and everyone get's depressed - it's the bedrock of emotion. However, humans have a tendency to trigger emotion and we're dam good at it. We do so in ways that we shouldn't.
On another note, poor Alfred Nobel must be going apeshit in his grave. I believe in bearing arms for the protection of the people against the government. However, a gun in this situation would have not solved anything. If the kid knew you could carry a gun on campus, he would have come through with a bomb. It's unfortunate that the very institutions we trust with our lives are contributing to the sales of arms on the black market.

So you're saying that being "crazy" is brought on by society and not a mixture of miriad genetic circumstances?
I'm pretty sure that people can be and are born crazy. How do you explain little kids that are psycho from the day they get pushed out? They are not old enough/aware enough for society/the world to have that profound of an effect on them yet.
In other news...
Looks like the dude had brushes with the law before...stalking chicks even.
Just goes to prove again....this never should have been allowed to happen.

150 people dead in IRAQ today alone; US media isnt covering those grieving families are they? 2000 a month dead but no George Bush prayering for all those families on TV: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/guides/456900/456995/html/default.stm

You dont think genes account for anything?
Seems highly unlikely given the rates of inheritance for many disease groups including cancer, cystic fibrosis, type I diabetes, schizophrenia, depression etc etc etc
Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
Exactly.
If a human can be born with those various maladies, why can't they be born with the chemical deficiencies and brain abnormalities that cause "crazyiness."

I'm not saying that Bush praying for the V Tech vics' families is over the top or something, just that it's near sickening that 30 dead in our our own corner of the world causes general outrage while 160 (Yes Hugster, the death toll went up again) in Bagdad is perceived as business as usual and genocides like in Darfur are just "too unimportant" to mention in the news.
You dont think genes account for anything?
Seems highly unlikely given the rates of inheritance for many disease groups including cancer, cystic fibrosis, type I diabetes, schizophrenia, depression etc etc etc
Imo the truth about that lies in the middle. I've always been told in my sociology classes that 30% of who we are is present at birth (genes, deficiencies, ...), the rest is determined by our environment (society, media, education). That's pretty accurate I think...
Anyway, this blind violence is becomming more frequent in the entire Western society, not only in the US. Just look at the score for a tiny shit country like my own. In the past year we've had:
If you ask me, a lot -if not the entire problem- is caused by the influence the environment has on kids: consumption pressure from an early age, glorification of violence by the media (not only movies and such, but also (gangsta) music), individualism, parents who are unable to spend enough time on their kids' education, lacking of elements like discipline, respect, social skills, values and norms in kids' education, ...
One thing I conclude from all that I'm seeing is that I'm more determined than ever to give my kids the same old school conservative and strict education my parents have given me. If I can't block out external influence, at least I'll be able to teach my kids how to deal with and react to it. But that's just me...

I hope they aren't going to try to make this killer a victim. I don't care if he was crazy or not because he killed 32 people.

Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
Dude was a total nutter... and it's not as if they didn't do anything.. they tried the police, mental hospital etc... so what do you do, kick him out of school and off campus cause he's different? There are nitwit athletes that do worse than stalk and write crazy shit and never get expelled or 'labeled'. I seriously doubt that would have stopped the carnage... in fact it probably had made it worse. The guy was a ticking time bomb and if he hadn't shot up VT he would've shot up wherever he ended up...

Ismail Ax was written on his arm. What does it mean? Some are saying it's an Islamic or religious reference. We've now seen the video and manifesto, so we see & hear this guy was full of hate.

yeah it makes me a hundred more times depressed when i see pictures of the victims and hear about their up and coming lives and realize it could be anyone that could be killed at anytime by someone like this, and dont want to hear about it, but... i think that NBC should devote as much time to EACH of the victims than they do the killer. since that asshat submitted his little fucked up video diatribe to NBC news he is going to be the front story on every newspaper/website/blog/whatever for the rest of the week and for years to come. but the victims? yeah we have heard about the prof who survived the holocaust, and saved some students, and maybe got a couple of seconds of pics of some students who were killed (mainly focusing on the attractive types), but will we ever know much about any of them? of course not. the news will focus on our resident piece of shit who is burning in the 7th circle of hell right now for a long time to come. it is unfortunate that everyone wants to focus on all the bad, since like we saw this guy even wrote about the columbine killers in his little psycho diatribe. if shits like him were just squashed from the media and given minimal coverage, who knows how the future 'copycats' would act?
Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
Natural Born Killers, anyone?
Little did we know how prophetic that movie would be. :what
Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
quick question.
What would be worse, being the parents of one of the kids that got killed or being the parents of the killer?
Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
the former without a doubt.
Re: 20 dead at uni shooting :(
You dont think genes account for anything?
Seems highly unlikely given the rates of inheritance for many disease groups including cancer, cystic fibrosis, type I diabetes, schizophrenia, depression etc etc etc
There are no genes that code for depression, or for schizophrenia. These are just linked to the effects created by those genes, ie. release/inhibition of neurotransmitters. Diabetes and cystic fibrosis however are different. The genes that code for those are usually mutated by several ways (ie. the complementary RNA screws up an amino acid sequence, etc..) and therefore prohibits the manufacturing of certain proteins that control physiological functions (such as insulin production).
quick question.

i would never want to know the feeling of having my child (when/if i ever have any :)) killed by some worthless human like this, but i am for sure guarantee you that unless the parents of the killer are as deranged as he is they feel JUST as horrible, if not worse than any of the parents for allowing their child to do something like this.
