Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
believe me, if you're a great dj. you can spin perfectly on whatever a club gives you. I've got a dj here in columbus that can prove that, the guy can spin on absolute crap decks and make a mix that is phenomonal.

Well that's nice, but you've gotta remember that a lot of supposed "top jocks" really aren't that technically proficient.
Tiesto? lol

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
well then that is their problem. i know I can't mix on turntables...i haven't been on them since 2004? I've been all cd's.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
I thought DJing was like riding a bike, whether it's 2 speed or 4 speed, it shouldn't matter... the end results are the same... you don't really "forget" how to do it or how it feels...
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
Most important reason for me to prefer cds above vinyl is that the vinylstores around here just can't offer the same collection as for example beatport can. I used to buy everything on internet via juno.co.uk but that became too expensive for me. Now I can buy twice the amount of music
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
analog-vinyl ; digital-CD
blonds ; brunettes
your choice!
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
^^^absolutely, your choice! I prefer CDs coz tracks that I play are simply not available on vinyls... I like digital labels, downloading tracks from the internet and so on...
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
believe me Caley. I had one time when I was doing my residency, and i actually brought a box of records just to see if i could do it...i wreked it so bad i finally said to myself....Damn i suck at spinning vinyl anymore...but to be honest. It could have been the slightly shitty decks i was playing on that night.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
the last time i played vinyl was last wmc on the womb... i actually found it really comfortable playing vinyl again..it was weird, i thought i would be shite too.. as far as crap equipment in clubs.. most dj's should bring their own needles anyway, that should avoid a lot of skipping and what not unless you dont take care of your records which is just wrong!
I wouldnt agree with perfect beat matching on vinyl is any harder than on cd's.. beat matching is beat matching, if your decks float, get them tuned up and synched up together. :)
i play cd's mainly because of the music selection, the ability to make my own edits and the cost effectivness.. vinyl is obviously a lot more expensive than mp3/wav format, and a hell of a lot heavier! lol
i do miss coming home looking for the box of vinyl at my door :(
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
believe me Steve, it had NOTHING to do with the needles. I ALWAYS bring my own needles. I hate people asking if they can borrow your needles in clubs as it's kind of an unwritten law that you NEED to bring your own needles to clubs.
The decks in that club are OLD and have been in a smoke filled club for years along with all the other things that can happen to decks in a club that doesn't really care about the equiptment.

yeah, i can appreciate that.. i have heard horror stories of crappy equipment in clubs, or broken equipment, cd's not playing in cd players, headphone jacks being broken so you have to rig it with somethinig to make the plug stay in, lol which blows me away at some of these places the mgmt is making $1000's a night.. suck it up, get new egar or put away the stuff each night so it doesnt get messed up
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
Sometimes the equipment is just crap! The problem I'm finding is that now most places I do play at the CDJ's are in use and the 1200's are for holding your cd case/s! I do it myself(put my cd case on them) but I still bring vinyl just incase there are problems with the cdj's or just to play some wax if the mood strikes me.

I'm worried that soon the clubs will just throw the 1200s out with the trash...

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
dumpster diving IMO
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
exactly, a little dumpster diving could be nice to salvage the decks. unfortunately these clubs would rather just get the money and run than investing it back into the club to help keep bringing the crowds...and therefore the money back.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
i prefare cd's. they are cheaper :)
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
i like vinyl is the best sound for my and the cd the problem is the crash, but i like the sound of vinyl never killer.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
what cd's crash?
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
well hard core audiophiles will swear that the CD is in fact killing music. They say that vinyl is the only way to go for the pure sound of a great recording, but in turn, we all can't afford 50K to begin building our home soundsystems. LOL.

um, and hell freezes over too.
Vinyl records aren't going anywhere. They may be declining as a choice for DJs, but sales are actually increasing on a commercial level. The collectors will never stop purchasing vinyl records because there is no better medium to collect. The full size artwork, the large tangible object of music, and the superior sound quality - cannot be replicated by any digital format.
The whole thing is a marketing scheme! And of course, the followers of America are jumping in head first. First they got people with cassette tapes, which sucked because of the rewinding and fast forwarding. Then came CDs, hey we fixed that rewind and fast forward thing and supposedly increased sound quality (wrong). And now comes the 'digital' wave - and they've got people buying the same thing they've already bought 2 other times on different mediums, again! Suckers.
Ultimately I'm baffled that the taste maker DJs would devolve to the digital format just for the sake of convenience and a loop feature - wow! And that's all it took for the bedroom and aspiring DJs to first accept the digital format in a DJ set - prior to that it was only circuit DJs that were using CDs in their sets - I'm pretty sure everyone bashed people that used them prior to this point in time - but now since Sasha does it, I guess it's cool. Let's not forget that these DJs may play digital formats in live sets, but they still collect vinyl at home and have not sold their collections on eBay (as many idiotic DJs have done)
I personally play vinyl records in my sets as much as possible - why? because the sound on a full scale system is subliminal and powerful and is not met with the digital format. The sound of vinyl goes through you and fills you up - whereas the digital format is heard in the air but it stops at your skin, it's not an enveloping sound like that of vinyl. Because it sets me apart from the lazy button clicking shopper DJs. Because it's the original and I like to keep it that way - it's never broke so why fix it? Because the digital format is over abundant and hard to keep sorted and sense of. Because the high end frequencies of digital formats bug the hell out of me - shriek, Give me some earplugs! I do however play digital stuff because I'm in the balance record pool and unfortunately that is their medium of distribution, because it's easy and cheap. Not my choice though. I've also recorded all of my vinyl records just for the sake of having them with me on my serato, especially the classics.
I won't deny there are some nice perks to the digital format. Cheap, quick, and unlimited. It's also cool that small labels can start up digitally without any overhead and get their music out there. It's good for your own personal productions to play out as well. It's also nice to play my classic and rare vinyls on digital format so that I may preserve the vinyl for collection sake. But even on special occassion I'll still play the classic wax to keep it accurate.
So all in all it's not one or the other exclusively. It's just another medium with it's own pros and cons.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
Nice reply Seth! You need to get Villo to come of some of the vinyl at balance, cause I'm sure he's still getting some tunes on wax. I have my collection and still buy vinyl, just not on the scale I used to, which sucks!
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
I am a huge supporter of vinyl b/c I love the feel and the definite improved sound quality that it provides. However, I have been using my CD decks a lot more than my Technics lately because it's SO much cheaper for me to buy tracks on-line that I can quickly burn and throw into the decks. I still prefer to spin vinyl over CDs and will buy tracks here and there online in addition to when I can make it to a shop, but for me CDs are a little more practical at the moment.

i like the smell of vinyl.... err em, That is all.

True, but in these clubs we are playing our music on large scale sound systems that could cost far more than 50K. Doesn't the audience deserve the best ;)
I know I'm stuck up about it, but I can always pick-out a digital track vs a vinyl track when listening to a DJ play at a club. Digital is all midrange. the bass is weak and tense and the highs are stunted and bright. I enjoy music too much and listen too deep to truly enjoy hearing it in the digital format. Believe me, I've thought hard about my decision to keep purchasing wax over the cheaper and plentiful alternative. Just keep getting convinced otherwise. :D
And honestly, records aren't That expensive. It's all relative. Hell at some clubs you will spend $10 on a damn bottle of water!
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
Has to be vinyl for me. Its all about the sound fella's. And really you dont have to have alot of talent to mix cd's , any one could do it, whereas not everyone can master wheels of the steel. You have to perfect on the decks if gig out or else you'll be laughed off the stage. As we've done with whales, lets protect Vinyl and get it off the endangered list. Remeber good DJ's play CD'd , Real DJ's play Vinyl.8)
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
^^^so what do you consider john digweed and sasha?
neither of them spin vinyl anymore
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
my answer would be (because I would say the same thing as the above poster) :
For one, they've sort of lost the heart, and taken the easy route. As many others have followed.
Though, for Sasha & Digweed (and the likes) I'd have to give them the benefit of the doubt. They have tons of tracks that aren't released, so they don't play wax in the live setting. Convenient, cheap, and quick. But yes, still lacking quality. I would definitely appreciate their live sets more if there were some vinyl tracks being played. But you take what you get and make the best of it.
Back in the day S&D would press up acetates of the unreleased material they got. More involved which takes more heart. Though acetates are mighty expensive and wear out, they would sell for a pretty penny on eBay, hehe.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
yeah you can see sasha's acetates on the delta heavy video. He must have spent a ton on those babies.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
quick question, if wav is the master copy, how can it be a lower quality to vinyl. far enough mp3 are squashed down but wav is the original state, surely is loses quality going onto a piece of wax....
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
let me see ...............
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
well most of the original recordings of classical music were to analogue tape that was 2 inches thick and played at a very high quality. Which in the end is probably still better quality than WAV. Plus the amount of post production on songs nowadays is almost nihl compared to ten years ago.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
quick question, if wav is the master copy, how can it be a lower quality to vinyl. far enough mp3 are squashed down but wav is the original state, surely is loses quality going onto a piece of wax....
even a wav is cut up into splices like an mp3 is, just a lot more of them which gives it a more accurate sound than any mp3. But when a track is pressed to wax it then becomes an analog signal when played, which is an infinite signal with no limits or splices. Think of a sine wave. A sine wave in digital format will have steps in the line because it is cut into splices and then put together. the sine wave in analog format has no steps, the line is smooth with no jagged edges.
As well, the mastering process is different for vinyl than digital, which brings out different sounds.
In the end, the ears don't lie. I've compared these two heavily in listening (trying to see if the sacrifice and savings of digital is really worth it to me) and the difference is very noticeable. The same reason audiophiles still continue to choose vinyl even today. In essence the digital format is not the true recording but a close replication, the closest option is vinyl. Not to mention it's an official artifact of the music, a digital file is not.
I love when I hear this, probably once a month. "They still make records!!??"
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
Cheers Seth
Exactly what I was looking for
gracias
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
i currently use both, but more so cd's. This is because im not buying as much vinyl as i used to. my friend used to run an excellent record shop, but poor sales forced it to shut down. This is one of the main reasons that i am now downloading more stuff. I miss being able to go into a shop a listen to the whole record if i wanted too, rather than hearing little poor quality 2-3 min samples through pc speakers when buying online.
Another reason for buying the majority of tunes in digital formats is that i have turned up to a couple of gigs with no turntables at all, which pissed me off.
But having said all that, i've started buying vinyl online again because i still love the feel and sound of the stuff.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
yeah, I think I will always buy vinyl as long as its around.
Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!
^ | better sound quality than vinyl?? i don't think so...
I didn't read all through this so someone might have said this but cds are much higher quality. vinyl does not transfer crip high end and adds midrange to the song. How do you think the song is brought to the press?? On a cd.
With cds you get the track on cd you are hearing it exactly as the artist made it. Some people prefer the warmth that viinyl adds but it is not higher quality.
