Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

the only dj i've ever heard of to mix like that without the aide of any program has been Danny Tenaglia. Sasha...from what I've heard of him lately barely mixes two tracks together. Yeah he has about a ton of little clips of tracks to loop them quite easily. But 5 tracks at once...not with the type of music he plays...it would make too much of a cocophany of sound.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Ok my bad he does run Ableton through his Maven but listen. This is taken directly from his Fundacion album flip book. And I quote:

"Completed in just a few days, "Fundacion" is the sound of Sasha's Ableton/Maven set-up in live action and intuitively matches some of the coolest electro house sounds around with forgotten classics he has revived and reworked. Sometimes as many as five tracks come together at once to create completely new tunes - through Sasha's innate ability to clarify at streamline sound means things never get over-crowded. Instead 'Fundacion' captures a great DJ having the time of his life. "It's completely re-energized me again," says Sasha. "I'm jumping up and down in the DJ booth. And people can feel that on the dance-floor, they know."

Look I'm not saying Sasha is God - or even the best at what he does, all I'm saying is that he is top 10% for sure.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

He might be using elements from 5 different tracks which he previously edited and spliced but he's not pulling a Carl cox up there trust me. Tell me one set of his you've heard that has five different tracks playing in it. Now don't get me wrong, I've always loved a good Sasha performance, but I think you're being a little too generous. Plus on top of that, you can play five tracks + at one time just using a xone 62 ( if you're using ableton or something like that along with some other hardware if you wanted. The Maven like mentioned before is just a Midi controller with pretty lights. It adjusts levels.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

the CDj's just allow for finer tuning and much better mixing with the looping functions, if you dont beleive me on that, go listen to my last mix in promo. tons of looping on the mix.

There is only one reason that Sasha uses that Maven setup: it's because he recognizes that DJing straight out of a laptop tends to look like shit to a live audience. It's a marketing thing. He's not stupid... He knows the crowd will react better to seeing him working knobs and sliding faders, not spending all his time squinting and some damn computer screen and pointing and clicking the whole night away. But there's nothing that that Maven thing does that Ableton DOESN'T. And there are plenty of people doing Ableton sets now, Sasha is hardly alone in that.

And while I think Sasha is ok and has done some cool stuff in the past, I'm not about to go cream myself just because he can press a button and have pre-set elements from 5 tracks play at once, no beatmatching required. I've been around this game to recognize that that in and of itself does not make you a great DJ.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I am about to buy my DJ setup and I decided to buy cdj's first. My friend has two Technics 1200 with a vestax mixer, so we both buy vinyl. Vinyl is the true format of music but can be a bit expensive. For a purchase of 10 vinyls, I can buy the double and then some on mp3. I like cdj's because there easier to learn on, provide effects and mp3 tracks are now more accessible to dj's and their cheaper. The only disadvantage of mp3 is that white label and hard-to-get tracks are mostly available on vinyl. I love the feel of mixing vinyl, its truly addicting. But for financial reasons, I prefer cdj's.

Man, if I hear you mention something about beat matching one more time you're going to get 5 across the face!

And all Maven is, is a glorified midi controller. But trust me on this, having a midi controller makes life a hell of a lot easier when you can use an actual knob and fader instead of use a mouse. Plus he can manipulate multiple parameters at once, not just one at a time.

With that being said, I'd rather listen to Diggers any day of the week than Sasha.

But now you should ask yourself, what does it mean to be a DJ to you? I hear you keep saying beat matching this and that and slagging on people who have transcended the traditional two decks and a mixer set up.

This whole purists attitude has got to stop as it's hindering the scene and not pushing it forward.

And don't forget, the Nazis were also purists.

#860852Post 53 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Please don't compare DJ's to the Nazis. Purist DJ's are nothing like the Nazi's. The Nazi's Killed people that were different. Dj's just grin and bear it.

This post you were referring to was much older than the other one I know you read. In that newer post I already conceded that Ableton can let you do cool things and clarified that my disagreements pertain to how it is sometimes used. Not gonna get into another long discussion on this or start talking shit about slapping people. The end.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

yeah that guy must have spent a while learning those decks. As you can see him hitting some kind of switches on the R2R's. I bet it took him a couple months to get that routine down.

#863542Post 62 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Not to mention gathering all the samples and tracks. That is just tight!

#863597Post 63 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I forgot about that part. Then you gotta put it all in the correct sequence. I'm imagining the guy MUST have done that same routine on decks first then recorded all the samples in the right way.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Sorry for my French but it basically comes down to analog vs digital recording....analog better sounding.....digital easier to get...now that all is said and done....

for those who want to learn more.... digital wave are a series of steps....(like stares)...analog get the best sound quality because the needle actually feeds from the groove of the vinyl....get it..... groove....

if a reply has been post like this im sorry for wasting your time....if not listen and learn....timing....crowd control....and sound quality...are the speciality of all djs....PS no clashing of waves.... BTW I hate forum like this.

Not sure where you were going with this, but the question was do "You dj with cd's or vinyl and why". We're not a bunch of dummies and can grasp the analog/digital difference! :p

post of the year imo. should have its own permanent sticky thread.

First of all, on behalf of [ms], let me state that we are, in fact, more than happy to pardon your French. We know you hate having to stoop down to our level on forum like this to explain all this difficult stuff, but we thank you for taking the time to do so.

Dispensing pearls of wisdom like these, it's clear to all who read this thread that you're clearly nothing short of a visionary genius well ahead of his time.

Digital = a series of steps?? Wow! Why didn't we think of that? We could just kick ourselves! And the part about AVOIDING the clashing of waves...I mean, things make SO much more sense now!

We are most eager to learn more. We hope you come back and can help us with such tricky issues as:

 1. We've heard that it might be a good idea to plug in the equipment and turn on the electricity BEFORE attempting to DJ a set. What do you think? Big mistake, or bad idea? We'd try it but we're scared of pissing off the Electricity Gods (as they are very powerful).

 2. Also, is it a good idea to try to mix with one's thumb up one's own ass? I keep claiming it's not, but Jibby and some others around here claim that it leads to some great results. Any personal experience you could provide here would be most helpful.

Thank you in advance! :)

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I play both, but don't have much new vinyl at all. I bought Torq (Serato like SW) to get more use out of the 1200's, and it's fun.

Look, the working DJ's need to be on top of their musical selection... and with vinyl taking a long time to get pressed (not to mention the cost), and any bedroom DJ having access to sites like beatport... the only way they can keep their selection fresh is to get tracks sent to them directly from their producer friends. The process of releasing a record takes just far too much time.

And the only way to do this is of course by using digital formats.

Also, have you looked at the 1200's in many clubs these days? They are certainly not in the best condition. And mixing with CDJ-1000's is super tight, you can get the pitch to within .02%, and never have to ride it at all during a mix. With everyone cranking out perfect mixes, is a big name DJ going to risk less-than-perfect vinyl mixes?

#871833Post 73 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Shit gets way out of wack on the forum these days, but when I read "5 across the face" it was pretty funny!

Oh, I love vinyl but its too damn expensive for me right now......Serato(mp3) has been doing the trick lately.

#871899Post 74 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

vinyl is wonderful. but the problem with it is the same problem with cd's. They cost too much and you never listen to all the songs on it. If only it were cost feasable to have a vinyl cutting machine in your home to make your own 12's to play out so that you always had tracks YOU wanted.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

why would vinyl mixes be less than perfect?

#872213Post 77 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Perfect beatmatching with vinyl is about 10x harder than with CDJ's... plus needles jump, records skipping, etc.

#872245Post 78 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

depends on what you're used to.

#872263Post 79 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

well look at the GU mixes, most of them were done by recording the VInyl into the computer, than doing the mixes on that. But I've heard people do mixes just as perfect on technics as well as cdj's. And who the hell has to worry about needles jumping on their vinyl...people who don't take care of their tools?

#872467Post 80 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Well at home is one thing... out in a club is another. You are stuck using what they provide, and in most cases, a pair of CDJ's will be more reliable for you than 1200's... which is kinda sad.
