I didn't notice a post and didn't get one on my search so I figured I'd ask. Do you prefer cd's to vinyl or any other audio media such as ableton or final scratch and why. Just because doesn't work as an answer either. So I'll start by saying that I enjoy playing my vinyl, but do to the ease of downloading from places like beatport, resonant vibes, and 3 beat to name a few I've found myself smack dab in the digital age. Granted years ago myself and my brother had access to Promo Only cd's when we played at Stealth in Daytona Beach, but used them in limited quantities. But having them there made it possible to learn how to use the denon double deck of that time. Today though I don't have any cd players to my name, and I find myself at friend's houses using whatever they available when able to. So while I love my vinyl and will play it any chance I get, CD's are where it's at for me currently. Billy

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

There's been just a bit of debate on this ;) I think it's all been beaten to death...

But that won't stop me from rambling about it (anything to avoid the work I should be doing). I love vinyl, always will. I use all vinyl right now because it's what I started on and I just don't have the time and resources to dedicate to a technology upgrade right now (full time grad student).

But as far as traditional DJing is going, I think it's fairly clear that vinyl is dying out. I expect it will be hard for me to get any of the tracks I'd like on vinyl within say 5 years. The future belongs to CDs and sound files, given the inevitable continued growth of nontraditional DJing (Ableton, etc.)

I plan to make the conversion to CD/sound file after I graduate from school and get a job. I may invest in something Ableton-like, but right now I don't see myself ever fully abandoning my CDJs that I'll get or whatever other technology that will still allow me to maintain the traditional mixing/beatmatching aspect of DJing. For that matter, I don't see myself pitching out my tables and a lot of my vinyl collection, either. It'll always have a lot of value to me, even if it'll be impractical for live performance.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I have a hard time finding some tracks even now. Stuff that is only released on vinyl or the ever popular "This track is not available for your territory" i love that crap. Beatport is slowly get classics and back catalogs of labels which is nice but it will be a long time before things get converted. And someday I'll start converting what I have to MP3s.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I purchased my cdj's last year in March. And i've only purchased about 10 vinyls since then. When before I would easily buy 10-15 every month!!

So now, if the mp3 is available, I'll purchase that instead of the vinyl format. If I can ONLY obtain it through vinyl and its a great piece of music, im buying the vinyl. But now in days, what ISN'T available as mp3?

Obviously mp3's are a lot cheaper, downloadable; no shipping, easier to carry, pretty much instant. Sound quality? hmm, I've actually purchased an mp3 of a track I already had on vinyl, because the vinyl's quality was poor. Might be my needles though. Havent' purchased a new pair of those yellow bananas in about 5 years lol.

But sound quality I give to vinyl. A lot of mp3's I've purchased have a bit too much treble that it can be a bit distorted. With mp3's, its not entirely sure what the sound quality might be.

The only thing I miss from vinyl are the album art/colors. The smell of vinyl after playing them for a good 2 hours, the warm turntables, I swear my bedroom would smell like a record shop.

Overall, I give the edge to technology.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

[s]Warning: Crotchety "Old Timer DJ" Sentimental Yammering[/s]

Purely from the perspective of the art discipline, I think I'll always love vinyl most. No CD or mp3 will ever replace the joy I had from going to Gramaphone Records in Chicago and making an afternoon of it...never knowing what I'd find, meeting people, making friends...and that feeling of satisfaction when you uncover something really unique that you can hold in your hands. There was some magic in the fact that you COULDN'T just get whatever hit track you wanted. It forced a patient growth in my musical tastes and fostered a real respect for the art. The stuff wasn't so close to being disposable.

I spent years frequenting stores like that, and every minute of it was precious. You don't get that from clicking around on some damn website in your living room.

I'll be moving along to CDs and mp3s because I don't want to be the dinosaur on its way to exctinction. And the changes and opportunities that this will provide will be good; after all, it is ultimately about the sounds and how they make you feel. But that stuff won't replace the intangible value that records had for me.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I think deep down anyone who is or has collected vinyl has that soft spot in there heart that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling when it comes to playing and listening to a record! It happens to me all the time, I'll bust out a track or two just to listen to something different and before I know it 3 hours have passed. I don't get that with mp3s. I miss taking a day and just record shopping, whether its at The Drop Shop or some little hole in the wall that you happen to pass while on your way to somewhere else. Its tangable! And while lugging around a flight case can be a pain when playing it still gives me some satisfaction. Besides I still have a problem with walking into a club to play and just have a small cd portfolio, it just doesn't feel right.

Thank you for the replies so far, I hope others decide to put there two cents in as well. I look forward to chatting some more.:)

CDJ's is where its at. You have so much more capability in almost every aspect. Better sound quality and cheaper music as well. Unless your a pure turntableist I dont see vinyl sticking around too much longer.

:roll::lol:

Vinyl is now more than ever being fazed out, I still believe it will be a while before its truely not pressed. When you have groups like Green Day who have stuff being pressed and available at Hot Topics, shows a nostalgia for vinyl. Being pressed to a record is a goal for most artists, the ability to get gold or even platinum records. You don't hear that about a cd, hell they come in the colors of gold, silver, white, black so anyone can have a gold cd. As for sound quality well that debate can be heated. My grandfather(rest his soul) used to tell me that cd's had the notes cut off, and I never quite understood it till a read an article or watched a show somewhere and it explained that because of the almost sterile conditions of making a cd(thru EQing and digital aspects) that the headroom you get with vinyl is not there in a cd. So their cut off. So the only sound quality I know of may be the lack of snaps and crackles, but that is about it. I've even heard productions that have put that(snaps and crackles) back into the recordings.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I stay away from those Promo Only cd's as most I have seen are mostly filled with crappy songs.

I've been fully on cd's for quite a while...no reason to go back to vinyl...as I have nothing recent on it.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

Still a LOT of labels i can't get digitally, and won't ever be able to. Plus, if it's good, being a collector, i'd rather have the vinyl than a file. Records > cds...but I play both..

Ok great, so having your music pressed to vinyl is a fantastic accomplishment and makes for a good collector item, noone is debating that. The topic of this thread has more to do with what you use personally to mix with and why. As I havd said before, cd's give you much more capibility then vinyl. Are you debating that?

Look, all im saying is pick any of the top international DJs - 99% of them are using CDJs. There is a reason for this. If its good enough for Sasha its good enough for me.

I had sooo much fun at Stealth, getting used to those Denon decks was tough but once I got the hang of it I loved them. I don't play as much (as you know) but I still love the sound/feel of vinyl. I will take the warm tones of vinyl anyday over cd, but alas those days will be coming to an end. We are in the digital age, and with that comes digital music. I have been thinking of selling my vinyl for the last year and a half but I'm just not ready to give up some of them. The one's like M&M - I Feel This Way, Ben Chapman's Erotic Animals, Elektra's Autumn Love an so forth and so on are the reason's why I haven't. Those days of Brassy's, MARZ, Colisseum, Stealth are long gone for me, but they live on in my vinyl collection. I have been and always will be a vinyl junkie, but digital is where it will be at for me in the future. If you don't progress, you get left behind!

What party might that be? And who has been playing at these parties of yours?

Live PA's are a whole different set up. We are talking about the differences between vinyl and cd's.

Look, there are advantages to using vinyl - there are some things you can only do with vinyl. All I am saying is that there are more advantages when using cd's - and there are definitely some things you can only do with them.

And just for the record Sasha is probably one the most progressive mixers alive right now. And I don't mean progressive regarding musical genre - he's doing some ground breaking experimental stuff right now. Oh yeah, and RITM fuckin OWNS! :RightOn:

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I see I've struck a nerve with this posting, which is good! We all have agreements and disagreements with the topic. Which is cool. As far as Sasha is concerned, yes he's concidered one of the most progressive dj's out there. But I believe alot of the top dj's have moved to cd's because of a few things 1) ease of transport (not loosing your records on flights or lugging them around to gigs) 2) the ability to make a track and test it without having to get it pressed to acetate first 3) Exclusiveness (a one off that nobody has). Or ableton because you can have alot of mp3s loaded and ready to play.

I'm happy to see some of the comments made here which was what I was hoping for. I love my vinyl and if it was the only way that I had to dj, great let me at the tables. But times are changing and I'm embracing the use of cd's and cdj's and maybe sometime in the future I'll move on to using a computer who knows. As long as you have fun doing it your way and making it your own.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I really don't follow Sasha anymore but as someone who has been a big influence on the rave or underground movement, I believe he is still relevent. Just look at the postings on here, people still like what he's doing. I prefer Danny Howells, Chris Fortier, Darren Emerson, or even Nick Warren but that's just me. So Jenks then in your opinion who's mentionable?

#822343Post 31 of 138

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I havent listened or downloaded anything by Sasha since about 2001. Never seen him live either. After 2000 I just lost interest in the fellow. Don't know why; I just did.

Over the weekend I tried my friends Serato thingamajig... It was ok. I was amazed at how "tangible" each track actually was with those "fake" records. Nice view with the laptop in front of you, clicking and dragging.

Only thing, I found the bpm counter thing to be way off! Not accurate at all imo.

I don't think I'll dive into something like that anytime soon.

 Man, where do you get this stuff? Sasha isn't mixing 5+ tracks together, and never has. lol. And if you're talking about him using Ableton these days, and him being ahead of his time, djs have been using ableton for ages, long before sarsh decided to give it a whirl and fuck it up. Look, i'm not denying the man's influence in this music we love. He was a legend in the 90s. To say he's still groundbreaking tho and he's leading the pack is just nonsense.

As for this vinyl vs cd debate, all that matters is what comes out of the speakers. If you're rocking dancefloors, that's the deal.

We're gonna be worlds apart on mentionables probably, as we are into different kinds of music, but for me:

pushing the envelope: Junction sm

old school, still pushing the envelope: Dan Bell, Matt Dear

new comers, that are really blowing my cap off: butane, ion ludwig, lee curtis...

this could be a long list..stopping there as this isn't the point of this thread.

I don't listen to a lot (read any) progressive house or electro house or whatever it's called these days, but i know enough to know Sasha isn't doing anything revolutionary.

Come on Jenks, Sasha is not only playing 5 + tunes at once, but he's doing it with his toes, this gives him more function at the ableton controls with his hands!.

Cool, though I'll admit I'm not sure who these people or groups are, but I'll definitely check them out if I can. That is one of the few regrets I have about the scene around central florida, being we were exposed more to sasha or florida breaks so some of the other styles just got over looked which was sad. I thank you for the enlightment and am open to anything you can send my way to hear some of these people or groups. And yes while this isn't what the original thread was about, I find it interesting to hear or see what may be influencing you and or what you play. Just for the record, I play and collect prog house, tech house, house, electro house, minimal, classics, rave, and some nu skool breaks when in the mood, hell if its got a good groove I'm on it. But I listen to everything just because you never know what you'll like till you listen to it. :)

Uh, have you seen Sasha live lately? His mixer is a one of a kind and is easily capable of mixing 5+ tracks together at any given time WITHOUT the use to Abelton Live. From the Qat Collection to his Airdrawndagger days all the way up till now - he has been pushing boundaries both in mixing as well as production work, you cant deny that. I'm not saying he is the only one leading the pack, but he is definitely in the top 3.

I?m sorry, but WTF are you talking about?

Mix together 5 tracks WITHOUT the use of Ableton Live?

His mixer is actually a MIDI controller specifically made for use with Ableton Live, I doubt it can do much without being connected to the software. Also, he may have 5 CHANNELS on it, but that doesn?t mean he?ll play 5 tracks all at once, I?ve never heard him do that in any set, Sasha chops his tracks into sections so he can re-arrange them on the spot, he might throw a few loops over the top and whatnot, but playing 5 tracks at once will sound like crap. Playing 5 loops of separate instruments might be alright, but not 5 tracks.

Also, there have been tutorials about DJ?ing with Live on Ableton?s site at least since version 3, Sasha only started doing it around the end of 2004, with version 5. So I?d say there were people DJ?ing with Live at least 2 years before Sasha, in fact, it could be any random joe, because the tutorial were avaliable to anyone. Richie Hawtin, for example, has been using it for his gigs way before Sasha ever thought about it.
