Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?

Gotta love those Syrians. . . .so can we bomb Damascus yet?
IAF destroys 2 Hezbollah-bound trucks from Syria carrying arms By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, and Reuters

Israel Air Force fighter jets destroyed two Hezbollah-bound trucks carrying weapons and ammunition. The trucks were attacked while driving through Lebanon's Bekaa section after having crossed the border from Syria.

The Israel Defense Forces said Tuesday that Hezbollah was smuggling weapons from Syria but added it did not regard Syria as a target for attack.

"In the last few days, the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Lebanon has continued," Major-General Gadi Eizenkot of the Israeli army command told a news conference.

"We don't see Syria or the Lebanese army as a target but at the same time we see the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Lebanon to be used in attacks against Israeli civilians."

Eizenkot said two trucks carrying weapons that had entered Lebanon from Syria had been destroyed by Israeli air craft on Lebanese territory.

The IDF has said it was a Syrian rocket that killed eight Israelis in the northern city of Haifa on Sunday.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for that attack.

"The (army) is using enormous force against Hezbollah and we have hurt it...but the organisation has many more rockets," Eizenkot said.
show both sides.
I did...the pictures I posted were from Israel. :what
personally i find it funny that such a fuss has been made about it when its not a western civilisation that has been doing this
What?? If America launched rockets into downtown Haifa I would be just as pissed about it.
if we were to see this and know the people were responsible for it were to be from the western hemisphere ( or what ever ) you would look @ it in a different light. :|
Speak for yourself.

Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?
And I didn't post those pics to make an anti-Israelian statement. I just wanted to give everyone who was talking about this crisis as if it were a videogame a reality check by showing what is happening on the terrain. If you go back a few pages, you'll see that it isn't the first time I make a post about the humanitarian side of the story.
Rest assured man, no one is taking this lightly. We are all full aware that there is a price to pay on both sides. What differentiates the 2 are the reasons they are dying. I'm pretty sure what was being said is that the Lebonese people are suffering these casualties because of their inability to kick Hezbollah the fuck out of their country. Lebonon has an army...why don't they have a Revolutionary War and die for their freedom?? To some westerners (Ok, me) it looks on the outside that they are unwilling to...they would rather live under these totalitarian regimes and bitch about the horrible lives they live, than risk dying by the thousands trying to force them out. But at the same time someone of the same faith will strap on a suicide belt and blow up a marketplace. Do you see how the view from the outside can get so blurred??
I think everyone here knows me well enough not to accuse me of antisemitism or racism...
Your right...it was the connection that didn't make sense.

Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?
Kinky, I agree with you (I know, i'm suprised too!)
:shock::shock: I'm gonna print this, frame it and put it up the wall in my office :D;)
Israel can take care of this one, the only question is whether the so-called west will allow us to.

Hizbollah and Hamas are hell bent on the destruction of not only my country but Lebanon and Palestine as well.

Hizbollah and Hamas, those two go together as well as their two sponsers Syria and Iran.

This level of fundamentalism, as opposed to Palestinian nationalism because there is a huge difference, started to raise its ugly head after the Iranian revolution. Maybe its time that the head of the snake was finally removed.

Jordan, Egypt and many of the Gulf States will be quietly cheering if that is the case, as they are all petrified of thier own fundamentalist.
I think you've put your finger on the soar spot by asking yourself if the "west" will allow or maybe assist in an anihillation of H&H.

The main problem here is perception versus reality. The only reason why I dare to say that I have an opinion on the matter is because apart from reading your posts, I've been catching up a bit on the different actors and the history of the crisis. I'm sure I'm not the only one here, but I'm certain that the majority of the people in Europe only knows the minimum minimorum. In other words, the information provided by the media.

Europe (generally speaking) has always had a slight tendancy to be pro-palestinian (not the same as anti-Israel, mind you) because we've always seen images of Israeli tanks and helicopters shooting at Palestinians throwing rocks and bombarding houses... I guess that difference in means and use of force is more striking than seeing the remains of a blown up school bus on the news. Yup, that might offend you Dave, but it's the way the reality is/has been perceived here.

Apart from that, the war on Iraq and the lies and human rights violations that went with it, led to the general perception that the crisis and everything else moving in the ME is a problem for the US, not the EU... Wrong too since you can only hold Bush directly responsible for what went wrong in Iraq, but that's the way the reality is/has been perceived here.

For the European public opinion to favor wiping out H&H once and for all, people here imo need to:

 • know what Hezbollah and Hamas actually are, what they're responsible for and what their exact agenda is.
 • realise the difference between Palestinian nationalism and muslim fundamentalism.
 • understand the threat they present for the entire world in the long run .

I hear more and more people talking about solving the fundamentalist problem permanently, but there's still a long way to go... unfortunately imo...

Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?

hey the bottom line is that it is hard pressed to apply any logic or reasoning to both sides than essentially come up to the conclusion that isreal is acting out of line. they endured this shit since its conception and its people dealt with it for centuries. finally that last straw was broken and they are fighting back. every person from iran, syria and palestine who get thrown onto the big 3 US news networks claims about an occupation and illegal acts. when in fact, isreal is doing the exact same thing they did. but doing it in defense of thier peoples, not trying to impose thier will, law or religion on ANYONE. and if we say the militants and thier supporters arent doing it either.... go check turkey and the AKP and kurdish speartists.... somalia right now.....kashmir........shall i go on? every point has a counterpoint. every fact is viewed from two sides.

the worst aspect is that, and i include a lot of christian peoples, no one really realizes that christianity and islam both grew from judiaism. both are offshoots. both follow a lot of the old testament facts. and yet, so many cannot respect that.

Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?

Personally, from my athiest viewpoint, this is all a bunch of bullshit. To me, religion is the most worthless thing on this planet (no offense to anyone, but it's the truth). So the fact that Arabs want to destroy Israel solely based on them being Jewish is, to me, probably the stupidest thing the human brain could be possible of .

Now that the troops have retreated, they still have the string puppets of Hezbollah. I don't know if you have seen the crater the explosion made that blew Hariri's motorcade to pulp, but it was HUGE. You're right that it might come across to "us" that they're unwilling, but it's actually fear which imobilises everybody.
But at the same time someone of the same faith will strap on a suicide belt and blow up a marketplace. Do you see how the view from the outside can get so blurred??
I'd call the propaganda/agenda of Hezbollah rather an ideology rather than faith (even though they (ab)use the islam), but I understand what you're saying.

And you're right about the suicide bombers making it even harder to even start to understand what really is going on and why. Is a guy blowing himself up on a market place because he's Hezbollah, because he fights for the Palestinian cause, because his family got killed or their houses destroyed by the Israelian army or because of a combination of the above? Imo blowing smoke is an important part of the fundamentalists' masterplan. The confusion divides Israel's allies and buys them time to carry out their actions.

Smoke or no smoke, I think it's important to realise that there's a huge difference between islam and fundamentalism, that not only Israel but the the entire region is being sucked into a situation planned by the fundamentalists and that it's a capital mistake to underestimate the complexity of relations and events in the ME...

eh religion, IMHO, is a good thing. however, in the last few years, its been hijacked and targeted. we arent targeting muslims. we are going after people who think they have the right to kill others

anything that brings people together in celebration, unites a community or gives hope to people isnt really a negative. go check out a baptist church. i did. i was amazed to see a group of people from 9 years old to 90 having a blast, and showing love to each other.

By emphasising judaism in relation to the wet dream some have about destroying Israel, you only stimulate anti-semite feelings imo. I know you're pointing out that we (christians and jews) stem from the same book and that we should honor that, but it's not the main issue.

Religion in this case like in so many others is just a tool to unite people behind a certain agenda and to justify certain actions. Nothing more, nothing less.

Israel is a sovereign democratic state which has been recognized by the international community. Therefore the question how the Israeli's got their territory and from whom isn't relevant. The question how everybody is going to live together in peace is.

The more I read/hear/see, the more I tend to think stability in the region is only possible if two main conditions are being met:

 • fundamentalism in all its forms (so not only on the muslim side, but also on the fanatic jewish side) should be rooted out completely. And in the long run it should be criminalised just like revisionism and racism.
 • Israel should recognize the Palestinian state in one way or another. and both should work towards good neigbourship in the end.

There you have it: Mission Impossible IV and V in a nutshell...

Intrisnically I believe that people can believe what they want. I have no problem with fundamentalist Muslims who believe what they do, my only problem is when their belief encroach on my life. Jewish fundamentalists, or fanatics as you call them, dont go out to convert, maime or kill (with the exception of two cases over the past thirty years I can think off). The difference between Jewish and Muslim fundamentalism is that one wants you to join them and the other wants you to leave them alone!

but honestly.... I dont buy that for 2 seconds, yes my "scientific" side says there's not God and hence Religion is loosely created to control the weak, which is true for the most part, but I dont consider myself a weak minded person and while I dont STRICTLY follow my religion (i.e. eat steak, fast, etc.) I have a religious side that still makes me want to pray to the big man up there before I start anything important in life. So I would say I do have a religious side to myself.

So for Mr. MidWestern born steak chomping BBQ grillin kinda man who's spent a good bit of his life in showbiz slam dunkin others, I wont' take his word for it (esp if he is not a religious person).

Yeah, my parents are christian, i don't think they're weak minded. For me tho, (and i won't elaborate on this as to not hijack this thread any further- although everyone is repeating themselves now anyway by page 21) i have no use for religion. I think it causes more segregation and harm than good. Spirituality is a good thing, but noone needs a book and set of rules and a man from the clouds to be spiritual. Christianity and Islam are equally retarted to me. To each his own tho.

once and for all, they are standing up for themselves, rather than looking elsewhere, and playing the poor me card. sadly, it is taking violence. but how far can a society be pushed before it pushes back. they have been pushed out of every region that now incorporates iran, turkey, the 3 countries between the black and caspian sea, all the way south to egypt and into saudi arabia. yes, at one point in history prior to 600 AD, the jews lived there. now, along the lines of these events, the christians are being pushed out as well in the southern regions. wait until they get pissed. they dont flee, they crusade.

Re: Are we on the brink of WWIII ?

Something to read....

Arab Majority May Not Stay Forever Silent

BY YOUSSEF IBRAHIM July 17, 2006

URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/36110

Yes, world, there is a silent Arab majority that believes that seventh-century Islam is not fit for 21st-century challenges. That women do not have to look like walking black tents. That men do not have to wear beards and robes, act like lunatics, and run around blowing themselves up in order to enjoy 72 virgins in paradise. And that secular laws, not Islamic Shariah, should rule our day-to-day lives.

And yes, we, the silent Arab majority, do not believe that writers, secular or otherwise, should be killed or banned for expressing their views. Or that the rest of our creative elite - from moviemakers to playwrights, actors, painters, sculptors, and fashion models - should be vetted by Neanderthal Muslim imams who have never read a book in their dim, miserable lives.

Nor do we believe that little men with head wraps and disheveled beards can run amok in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq making decisions on our behalf, dragging us to war whenever they please, confiscating our rights to be adults, and flogging us for not praying five times a day or even for not believing in God. More important, we are not silent any longer.

Rarely have I seen such an uprising, indeed an intifada, against those little turbaned, bearded men across the Muslim landscape as the one that took place last week. The leader of Hezbollah, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, received a resounding "no" to pulling 350 million Arabs into a war with Israel on his clerical coattails.

The collective "nyet" was spoken by presidents, emirs, and kings at the highest level of government in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco, and at the Arab League's meeting of 22 foreign ministers in Cairo on Saturday. But it was even louder from pundits and ordinary people.

Perhaps the most remarkable and unexpected reaction came from Saudi Arabia, whose foreign minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, said bluntly and publicly that Hezbollah's decision to cross the Lebanese border, attack Israel, and kidnap its soldiers has left the Shiite group on its own to face Israel. The unspoken message here was, "We hope they blow you away."

The Arab League put it succinctly in its final communique in Cairo, declaring that "behavior undertaken by some groups [read: Hezbollah and Hamas] in apparent safeguarding of Arab interests does in fact harm those interests, allowing Israel and other parties from outside the Arab world [read: Iran] to wreck havoc with the security and safety of all Arab countries."

As for Hezbollah and its few supporters, who have pushed for an emergency Arab summit meeting, the response could not have been a bigger slap in the face. Take a listen:

 • Abdul Rahman al-Rashed, the general manager of Al-Arabiya, possibly the most influential Arab opinion-maker today, was categorical yesterday: "We have lost most of our causes and the largest portions of our lands following fiery speeches and empty promises of struggle coupled with hallucinating, drug-induced political fantasies." As for joining Hezbollah in its quest, his answer was basically, "you broke it, you own it."

 • Tariq Alhomayed, editor in chief of the Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat, stuck the dagger in deeper: "Mr. Nasrallah bombastically announced he consulted no one when he decided to attack Israel, nor did he measure Lebanon's need for security, prosperity, and the safety of its people. He said he needs no one's help but God's to fight the fight." Mr. Alhomayed's punch line was, in so many words: Go with God, Sheik Nasrallah, but count the rest of us out.

Several other Arab pundits, not necessarily coordinating their commentary, noted that today Sheik Nasrallah has been reduced to Osama bin Laden status, a fugitive from Israeli justice, sending out his tapes from unknown locations to, invariably, Al-Jazeera, the prime purveyor of Mr. bin Laden's communications.

All in all, it seems that when Israel decided to go to war against the priestly mafia of Hamas and Hezbollah, it opened a whole new chapter in the Greater Middle East discourse. And Israel is finding, to its surprise, that a vast, not-so-silent majority of Arabs agrees that enough is enough. To be sure, beneath the hostility toward Sheik Nasrallah in Sunni Muslim states lies the deep and bitter heritage of a 14-century Sunni-Shiite divide, propelled to greater heights now by fears of an ascendant Shiite "arc of menace" rising out of Iran and peddled in the Sunni world by Syria.

The sooner this is settled the better.
