Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

I've just read through this whole thread again and firstly it is great to see people expressing their opinions openly. Nothing beats a free and open discussion. :D

Now, after reading this, I believe it IS mainly about the money. It is all about marketing. People are discontented because they are buying what is essentially a promotional tool . Which makes it harder to judge on it's merits. Most want, expect, and deserve any cd they buy to be carefully programmed , and played, a complete work. No partial set can ever be that. The price should not come into it except in that there is a price, not how much it is. I think releasing live sets is not such a bad thing and I am sure I would buy some, but I would want a whole set and if I did want it price would not be a issue.

My personal opinion is that John Digweed is a very astute business man. Not that there is anything wrong with that :) In fact it means that he has lasted incredibly well in an industry that isn't known for longevity. Most here are very grateful for that fact, and so are producers he has helped along the way. But he actually doesn't give anything away without a price to be paid , every post is a winner in some way. Very sensible :) Even the intro etc on the MS Birthday mix was an ad for transitions as much as birthday wishes to Ms. Good business perhaps, but I for one would have preferred something just a tad more personal to MS than part of a 18 month old set, and wanted it in 320 :) The transition mixes we get , someone has to rip them them, they are not given to us. I must admit the adulation he receives here for allowing us to do that is particularly galling to me. Adore all you like for his music, but not because he gives us anything. Whoever said we should be giving back to him had to be joking. The site is almost a Digweed shrine  This site gives so much to him all the time. This place with it's member numbers is a PR heaven for him . It's value would immeasurable. Imho he owes MS big time :)

Just like to say , I have made it clear many times that I do believe in a Djs right to control his own work and I probably stand up for Djs as much or more than anyone else here. :) Even Digweed on the camera issue. I support by buying every track I like, I hope the artist gets a cut from the wav surcharge  I always buy the cds, for the quality and to support. Shit, I even refuse free tickets on occasion. :) One of the things I have come out against very strongly is that sense of entitlement. So this is certainly not about that. I'm not asking for this to be given away. Although that would have been a lovely gesture. But my first reaction when I saw this thread was, ok, how much is going back to the venue and to the people who put on the gig?? After all they paid for Digweed to perform that set.

Btw I know how hard it would be for Dig72 to write what he has written here . He absolutely adores Digweed and is an incredibly loyal fan. But I have to say he wasn't the only one left with a bad taste in his mouth over this, and for me the birthday mix as well.

Not talking about the music here in particular, because I haven't heard it.

The 2 minute intro was personalised to the site !!! It took some thought (i.e. wasn't just a bland 'happy 10th birthday here's a DJ set'). It expressed the understanding that [ms] hosts* John's weekly show and that Transitions polarises opinions. Diggers also clearly gets across that he respects the forum members/fans right to their opinion/views on his music.

I'm sorry, but how many other major headlining DJs out there would do such a thing ?
I for one would have preferred something just a tad more personal to MS than part of a 18 month old set, and wanted it in 320.
1. [ms] got an exclusive that no other site has.
 2. Yes it did tie into Cordoba (nothing wrong with that), but the set wasn't just picked at random, I can assure you of that !!!
 3. Bit rate is down to the artist in terms of the quality they release/upload/send.

John took the time to phone about the set, he was in between tours and still had his 400th radio show to do ... I assume he also wanted to have some time for his family too ... yet he still took the time to arrange the set. he didn't have to do this, but wanted to find the time to do so in recognition of our support.

On the family thing, recent interviews with the likes of Hernan and Josh Wink make interesting reading on a how the DJ life and running a family is hard to balance.

He has a stupidly busy schedule + his day job (when not running a record label with a consistent & busy release schedule) involves listenening to more new music than most DJs out there. He's very hands on with stuff and puts in so many hours sleep is at a premium (check out the South America documentary). yet again, he found the time to put other tasks aside and support [ms].
The transition mixes we get , someone has to rip them them, they are not given to us.
*To be fair we're not meant to get them, a blind eye is turned. The contract for the show is made with the radio stations ... in reality many people here would have to pay for the show through subscription with Proton. However, Proton are very nice about things and allow us to host a rip provided this is a few days later.

one thing worth noting is that it took 10 years before digs gave an exclusive mix to ms. correct me if I am wrong.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba
I see where you are coming from to a point, but if a DJ gives out a live set for free the artists featured on the mix haven't been paid or asked their permission to have their tracks given away. Some might call it exposure others theft.
I hear ya Chunky and agree with you on the issue of exposure vs theft.

What I'm unhappy about is the fact that Digweed after all these years, decided that it would be a good idea to 'sell' a supposed amazing live set, rather than to share it.

It's the in your face commercialism, something that many around these parts try very hard to avoid, that annoys me the most.

The release of this Live Cordoba mix and pricetag associated with it, just didn't feel right for me.

Many friends of mine felt the very same way, except I'm not too fussed to be speaking about it openly.

Peace

Wow... some very serious discussions going on here....sorry I didn't read the last couple pages....judging from the post above ... I'm not even sure if I'm in the right thread anymore.

I'll tell you something .... being a HUGE Digweed fan myself (however trying not to be bias) ... I don't think this is his best release... however its not his worst either.... I for one, quite enjoyed this mix and have no regrets buying it. To say its a BAD release, its certainly harsh non the less.

I'll put some money down on this one and say that its like fine wine... will get better with age, then again... not all wine taste better with age...lol

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Got CD1 on after a long day at work that started at 8.30 am and ended shortly after 20:00 pm.

Very tired & woking up a stir fry, my mood is improving v much as CD1 is hitting the perfect groove with a nice gradual uplift and the little nuances that you notice and I didn't hear before.

Sounding great from CD to my home hi-fi and large speakers, and definately don't want anything more pumping.

Accompanying wok recipe here c/o the lovely Ching :

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

this was the first Diggers release in a long time that i wasn't interested in at all, having been put off by the Structures and Bedrock label specific release series. but it came out on my birthday so i got it. very pleased. awesome vibe. this will be in rotation for some time. like the Transitions series, i'll be pulling this mix out occasionally for years to come, i can tell...
I´ve been listening to this mix the last couple of days and I´ve enjoyed it a lot. I just hope we get Córdoba 2 in a 3 CD box set so we can have the whole mix.
A part 2 with the remainder would be immense .. and also make this totally unique.

With all the MP3 sets out there I love having a CD set I can throw on the hifi .. plugging my i-pod in just isn't the same.

I still think the live set release is a great idea (sometimes studio CD comps are over processed .. a little organic quality never hurt anyone) and it captures what was being played out at a moment in time.

Great to see some really positive comments here outweighing the other stuff & the feedback in the wider world has been great - this is from Discogs :

"I am such a big fan of John Digweed, this comp is amazing (again)! Flawless mixing en excellent combination of beats and fluctuating intensity in melodies. Digweed is a master in building up atmosphere and groovy tension in a subtle way. The "live" feeling is a big plus on this recording, however sometimes it seems the livesounds have been filtered down a bit. Special remark for Guy J`s productions, awesome!"

For those that have forgotten what a CD looks like or think this was hastily put together on the cheap here's the luxury* package (cost wise I've paid the same for 1 CD sets from Berghain and Cocoon where you get the single CD and that's pretty much it) :
