Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Chunky doesn't count it as a real mix cd if it only has tracks Diggers signed himself.

#1616530Post 122 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

A mix CD is a bunch of tracks the DJ has decided to put into their mix.

Hernan's [ms] mix was all music that involved Sudbeat or himself - its fantastic, just as Structures is.

Great music is great music, end of.

No its more of a concept CD and if you look at a lot of them they don't tend to make good CD's. Pappa'a Choo Choo, Cass's Prologue along with many others the concept is usually to constraint. Both CD's them artists where nowhere near as good as the other CD's they put out around the same time that weren't stuck to tracks specifically tied to one label. Sasha's ivolver is another example. His concept was just remixing every track just for the sake it, not really caring whether he makes is better or not. I'm not also going to rely on John Digweed to tell me what great music is either. Bedrock have put out some great mixes & tracks, they've also put out some terrible one as well.

Sorry but i cant agree with that statement.. I think that a bunch of tracks the DJ has decided to put into their mix means nothing more than just a PROMO MIX..Mix CD is something MORE..It has to be something SPECIAL.,UNIQUE,CUTTING AGE or whatever you like to call it..Thats why a live mix, released on a cd compilation is wrong..There is no concept,no flow,no unique transitions..its just another live mix out there..the only thing is,you have to buy it..WHY??

TBH I always thought of those mixes as promos for Bedrock label.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Is Diggers really that hard up for cash????

He played the gig and got paid well for it, he obviously had one hell of a night, the night was was so good that wanted to share the whole experience with like minded people.

Except you have to pay for it.

When I heard about the release and the story behind it, the very first thing that came mind was that is was a cash grab, plain and simple. Good for Digweed and if that's the way he want to do business the so be it. Who am I/we to tell him otherwise?

And for those who don't see it that way or don't mind, then I really do hope that the purchase was worth it for you.

I've bought Diggers stuff in the past but I'm not all interested in purchasing anymore. This whole deal has left a real bad taste in my mouth and am really dissapointed that he went this way.

Just hope that Hernan doesn't see it as a good thing and decide to do the same.

And on a positive note, I simply love the discussion that's being had in this thread, the real passion and ideas for great music is a breath of fresh air. This thread is one of the better ones we've had in a while.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Which is the discussion here ?

The quality or why this set became a compilation?

I think this is the main reason

John:
Wow, what can I say about this party in Cordoba earlier this year to do it justice? The crowds in Argentina never disappoint and are always up for a great night but this party took things to a whole new level for me. I played for over 5 hours and really didn't want to stop, as I was having so much fun. Fortunately I recorded the set and I hope that this live cd helps to capture some of the energy from such an amazing party.
Plus,.

I could not be in cordoba, but these should be the first two hours or 3-4 hours. so it is logical that the first cd sounds a bit more housey and the second a little more progressive or techy or whatever. Most live sets starts This Way, not all, but, taking the idea of being transformed into a compilation in the future, is logic.

You're not interested in purchasing because these days a lot of DJs put shitloads of sets available for free, making all of us spoiled. Nobody buys mix cds anymore because of the same reason. Digweed chooses not to do that and people complain?! I don't get it.

#1617100Post 132 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

^ yeah but digweed didnt put out a mix cd, he put out a live set like other dj's do but the difference is that it wasnt free, and even tho it was released for a price, it wasnt the expected quality...ive personally travelled and put lots of money just to go see digweed live many times, so its not the money its what we get for it, again i said ill be willing to pay even $100 for a good 3-4 hrs from vagabond or some banger set...but give me that oooof moment is all im asking for, esp when were talking abt diggs here which we all know him for these moments and not the smooth stuff, so give us that and not the first 2hrs

and this is not complaining eventho anyone is allowed to complain esp when ur paying, dosent mean that u liked it then everyone else shud or just not say anything about it if they didnt....many of the people "complaining" are some of the most digweed fans ive seen sooo good for u for being too nice

if digweed had put out a well thought mix cd i think was gonna be much better than this and much worth than the first 2hrs of a set, he could have left that for transitions, and the free live sets lately on transitions has beeeen soo much better than this

I see where you are coming from to a point, but if a DJ gives out a live set for free the artists featured on the mix haven't been paid or asked their permission to have their tracks given away. Some might call it exposure others theft.

At the end of the day it doesn't,t mater if its recorded live or not, just whether its good or not.

#1617106Post 134 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

I see more and more people are getting disappointed with Cordoba live mix on sale. John have recently said he charges only for the travel, hi is djing is for free. He should have said he's playing a live gig for free but charges for the recording... I don't get it - years ago he used to release full and up-to-date sets, now he charges for mediocre recent live mixes and airs (if airs...) some 2-years expired gigs.

When was that? I don't remember him releasing any sets himself other than his radio mixes. Some club promotors recorded some of his sets and shared them on the Internet a few years later but that about it.

#1617108Post 136 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

I assume the release of the CD is about the Bedrock label, keeping a profile for releasing music and promoting new artists/music (CD3).

If you honestly think that much money is made out of this you are all well out of touch - all artists will be getting paid, and having your track on a third unmixed CD should also result in more money.

Selling 3 x CDs at £10.99 is hardly the biggest money maker. Do you really think running a label a luctrative these days - for every track sold there must be a ton of illegal downloads.

As for whinging about things not being free ... years ago, bar the Essential mixes, you all had to pay for you music !!

Around the time of this release John's fans got a WHP mix, a Timewarp Mix and an [ms] exclusive Moonpark set : i.e. 5 hours of free live music.

This is the sad state of affairs we've reached in terms of an unwillingess to pay towards the artists/labels you like ... at some point the producers will end up packing it all in through a lack of livelihood ... then everyone will moan about a lack of quality music out there.

There seems a distinct lack of support for things these days, which annoys the hell out of me and (frankly) makes me embarassed at where the scene has come to.

#1617109Post 137 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Plus kudos to Chunky ... who buys the old cassettes off e-bay, spends his own time ripping it and pays for the sites he uploads and shares streams/downloads from for the benefit of everyone. In terms of unpaid time and running costs this probably amounts to a few £££s over a year.

I seem to remember the same being said about Northern Exposure when it was released. Some of the best CD's I own didn't do anything for me the first few times I listened to them. Some took months and even years before I could fully appreciate them.

True with the big fan part .. but the non-music comments do my nut in.

The part of Digweeds sets I really enjoy are the early segments with the house and tech elements where he moves the sound around and plays different music, driving things up a little and taking it back down, throwing in the unexpected. This is the sort of thing he does at fabric and in the longer sets.

Some people prefer the latter parts, where its banged out more .. for home listening/commuting I prefer something with the other elements, so Córdoba suits me fine .. if I want a banging set or one back to the prog days my drive has plenty of them.

I saw a comment the other day on Bedrock saying its not the Digweed they remembered of the 90's !! The 90's was 13 years ago ... music and artists move on.

Many people actually think this is v good (there's just the same dissenting voices here) ... for me the idea is a great one ... its different, nothing wrong with that.

Only seen one review .. but that seems positive:

Nice addition to my collection, v nice little package, some excellent music ... and it'll sound great in years to come. Well worth the price of 2.5 pints.

Incidentally I'm rather warming to CD 2! Will have to spend a pleasant evening playing the 2 CDs back-to-back.

#1617167Post 149 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Well here's a question: Cordoba was so amazing that he decided to release the set.

Out of a 5(?) hr set he reckons the early 2hrs is the highlight of an amazing night? Surely not? Are the rest of the 3hrs worse than this???

I don't think the discussion here is about paying or Digweed making a buck. We're all fans and we've all contributed to his gigs and releases over the years.

The dissonance here is around the idea that Cordoba was SO AMAZING HE HAD TO release it (and we generally go rabid over the idea of a live set from Digweed to begin with), and then hearing this.

You know, in business speak there's this thing called 'managing expectations.'

Not at all, I still buy comps simply because I enjoy them alot more than your weekly/monthly, run of the mill promos/mixes. And supporting the artists is another reason.

Why didn't he release 'another' live set on his show for everyone to enjoy, like he's done in the past? I mean what was so special about that Cordoba night, that made him want to charge fans this time round?

Would we all be happy, if Digweed decided that fans would have to pay to listen to his weekly Transitions shows? I mean why not, he could very well choose to do that and nobody can say shite. And he may or may not lose fans/support as a result.

But hey, that's business.

#1617199Post 151 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

This can be the most controversial and commented compiled of all time. :D

come on, it is impossible, not everyone likes the same thing. I like this comp. others may not, sometimes we have differents tastes. Nothing else.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

as simple as it is, its not about the money, its just abt expectations. and anyone is free to think anything with no judgement by others. were all fans of digweed and the guy is too good that we always expect the best from him...well me personally after he blew my mind everytime i saw him live...everytimeee

i personally really need a long set from diggs that captures that good deep part and moves up to the bangin darkness (its what i like the most and why i go see him live) without interrrruptions...dont care free or not...tho if free then thats is just pure topness by john. other dj's gives us many live sets for free eventho some might not like it but still cant say much coz they dont make people pay for it...otherwise the reviews might be a bit harsher
