Re: Lionel Messi
He's remembered here as a very skilful footballer, a cheat and a drug user. Maybe if the drug-testing in sport was as stringent in the 80s as now, his career would have been even shorter?? I think it's fair to say most people in England would rate him in their top 20 of all time (the scots would have him number 1 - lol!) but you can't seriously tell me he's better than any of these fellas?

Bobby Moore, George Best, Gary Neville, Paul Gascoigne, Nigel Clough, John Barnes, Bob Latchford, Dixie Dean, Stan Matthews, Peter Crouch, Kenny Dalglish, Archie Gemmil, Steve Staunton, Jason McAteer, Brian Rice

Yeah they did but they're "over it" now
i almost spat my drink at that

No i'm not a manu fan Hazcock. Apart from manu who posts all his pics here, he's ace and i'm a big fan of his.

Again i think it's a cultural difference but is there any finer sight in the modern game than gary neville on the over-lap?

My heart races every time he goes haring past on the outside with his stupid ratty face screaming for the ball, knowing full well he won't get it.

I respect the guy so much i named my spirit level after him

Re: Lionel Messi

watch the video again, only more carefully this time.

He strikes the ball into the net with his foot, that's all. It's FOOTball - I never mentioned Maradona or made a reference to any handball.

Isn't it about time you lot just dropped it with the handball thing??

You're starting to come across as bein obsessed

Oh the irony !

Great game from the little one!

#1380797Post 102 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

great? based on what? some decent dribbling and falling over a lot

#1380846Post 103 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

So far, best player in the team and full responsable of Argentina triumph at the first match...As you might expect from a top player.. A great first step is already made by him, not only on my personal opinion but a big part of the world press... Lets see what happens on the next game...

#1380852Post 104 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

he is amazing with the ball at his feet I'll give you that, missed a few chances the worlds best should have put away one or two of those.. but he had nowt to do with their goal mate, that was a great header and shite marking, Heinze ran from about 30 yards out unmarked, unless Messi took the corner?

He needs to score !!!! just to get that off his chest

Agreed 100%

#1385930Post 107 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

He will score sooner or later (hopefully soon ) .. Besides the goal thing, he is clearly the best of the team and imo, best player in the World Cup so far... Still There is a long way to go for all players...

#1434282Post 108 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

everyone who loves soccer can't think Messi ins't a big deal... He is the best player i've seen in my life, playing in the best team ever... Just wonderfull

60 goals in 55 matches on this 2010 so far... amazing

messi is some special stuff man, just seeing him play is awesome

#1436263Post 110 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

he's good, no doubt.. this whole "best ever" shit needs to slow down

#1436281Post 111 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

^ Difficult to slow down playing this way.. Honestly i didn´t thought he could play better than last year, but he is proving himself over and over again that there are no limits for his talent..

At least 2 more world cups to go, maybe 3.. If he wins one of them (if so, his contribution will be hugely important) , there won´t be any more discussions imo..

Re: Lionel Messi

I get it, there are just so many "if's" I wish people would just let these kids grow up and stop piling massive expectations on them just to tear them down when they don't live up to the hype

#1436416Post 113 of 195

Re: Lionel Messi

Yes.. i agree with you on this one.. Guess ocassionally there are a few special cases on all sports which inevitable get massive expectations.. even more when you talk about soccer.. i guess he already is one of those cases..

Federer, Nadal, couple of years back Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt are similar cases on other sports imo..

Re: Lionel Messi

^^^ These guys are in a class of their own. The media or public talking them up isn't going to affect them. If it did, they wouldn't even get to the stage they're at now. Unfortunately until Tiger hits 19 majors he won't be considered the best ever. But this is of course to no fault of "expectation".

I disagree, of course it affects them, they just tend to not show it very often

I don't believe it does in the context you mentioned. These people aren't children, and thus shouldn't be treated like it.

If someone has the ability and stats to rival the greatest ever then debating this is totally valid. They're performing at the elite level and it comes with the territory.

In my opinion your theory holds true for young junior athletes. In fact it's not even limited to sport.

Re: Lionel Messi

congrats to the kid scored a bunch of goals, none in the world cup though and none when it really mattered in the champions league, but hopefully he will live up to this award.. great player for sure, can't wait to see how this plays out, the sport deffo needs a player like he can potentially be, especially with all the negativity surrounding it lately
