I agree that Beckham is way overratted. They are even comparing him to Pele when Pele came over to the NASL in the 70s. No freakn way you can compare him to Pele. Pele had talent.

However, his popularity to most non-soccer fans is great so it should have a positive impact to the US.

There are probably several reasons why they have signed him but I'm sure the main ones are not for his football abilities. What his profile will bring to the club in merchandising will no doubt pay for most of his wages, he'll sell more replica shirts than any other American sports person.

^^^ i blame the arenas for that .... and also i noticed that here in the US going to a sports event implies going to a show that is more than just watching the game ... in soccer matches your eyes are glued to the field .. you dont want to miss one seconf of the game Americans are used to a different kind of show no matter the sport ..

Interesting.

Baseball, america's pasttime, is a slower sport than soccer, requires more attention to grasp everything that's going on when nothing is in movement, and ballparks from big leagues to little leagues are packed to the rim with fans glued to the "nonaction" all spring/summer/fall. Im not taking it personal, i'm just not following your theory here how Americans can't concentrate enough to follow soccer, and that we watch sports differently- like there have to be explosions going off every 5 minutes for us to be interested.

soccer isnt popular here for one reason, and the reason is that the game could be played at a pace where it would be attractive, maybe a pace similar to basketball and hockey. its too slow for the type of game it is. i mean a soccer net is 30 feet wide and yet, a game where 4 goals are scored is considered a high scoring game. for a game that says it is physical, it deters contact too much, and when there is contact, there is flopping, whining and crying.

americans love the slow game of baseball for what it brings to the table beyond the small action of running the bases. its so much of a mental game, especially when you see a guy like derek jeter, manny ramirez, david eckstein, or ichiro play. they know when it is time to attempt to hit the ball the opposite way, to drive a runner over, when a runner knows when to jump the pitch and get a running start, stealing a base, putting together the stringof hits to score a run. and then you can look at pitching to a great hitter, whether a homer hitter or a feild hitter. for instance. when the tigers p,layed the cards, the real baseball fan knows that when eckstein was on first with one out, and albert was hitting, the pitcher and feilders know that albert would get an inside pitch to try to prevent a power fly ball, but rather, try to concede an infeild groud ball, or a blooper, to prevent eckstein from reaching scoring position.

if you are gonna bring in the "arenas"(still wondering why), only 2 sports regularly play inside, basketball and hockey, and for good reason. winter sports, requiring a feild of play void of elements. baseball and football teams that play in a dome, do it because of weather temps. you will only see the domes in the north and far south because of summer heat in florida and arizona, and winter cold in greebay,

the arenas in hockey and basketball give you a "show", meaning some cheerleaders and a period break entertainment. also, you might see something on the jumbotron, but only in downtime.

lastly, if you think that americans dont follow soccer, tell; that to the few hundered thousand people that packed little italy here in NYC after the world cup. we have fans that enjoy the game, but comon, baseball and football will never be touched as to what they are.

and to all the people that say baseball is only american..... there are leagues for baseball in every world wide region outside of mainalnd europe and africa. asia has multiple leaguies and national teams, central and south america have baseball leagues that produce some of the most talented players we have. albert puljos, arod, mariano rivera, ichirio, ching ming wang, daivid ortiz, johan santana, all top level players from regions far from the states.
