Well so say some scientists anyway.... Debatable criteria, but I gotta agree with the results!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4581374.stm

American football, basketball and baseball have millions of followers, but they can't match soccer for sheer excitement, says a team of scientists. The reason is its element of surprise, claim researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, US. Football is more likely to produce an unexpected result, such as a "giant killer" win in the FA Cup. Scientists analysed results from more than 300,000 games played over the past century. They reviewed five sports: ice hockey, football, baseball and basketball in the US, and English football. The team decided to make unpredictability - how often a leading team is overcome by an opponent with a worse record - the best measure of how exciting a league is. "If there are no upsets, then every game is predictable and hence boring," co-author Eli Ben-Naim told New Scientist magazine. The results of the analysis showed that the "upset frequency" was highest for soccer, followed by baseball, hockey, and basketball. American football came last on the list, and so was labelled the least exciting sport. But there was a twist in the tail. When the scientists looked only at data from the past 10 years, English Premiership football and baseball swapped places. One interpretation of the finding might be that soccer has become more predictable in recent years.

dont encourage him bryan, he probably spent hours trying to come up with such an unfunny "clever" comparison

its truly amazing that people who watch baseball can have the nerve to call anything short of - and probably including depending on colour - watching paint dry boring

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

i need no encouragement.

soccer is 2 hours of watching a bunch of people run back and forth interrupted maybe 3-4 times by a goal. oh yeah the occasional trip.

Mark my words ladies, football will take over all your dull sports in the not so distant future. I have a friend who did a twelve month stint over there teaching young kids how to play the beautifull game. All the parets were saying that football was the future.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

In America soccer = WNBA... nobody cares, nobody is going to care and I've been hearing about soccer being the "next big thing" for over 20 something years. My kid/kids will be playing hockey thank you very much.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

i cant see how you can compare the level of excitement in a game of football to a game of hockey. i like football very much and am pumped for the world cup but honestly it doesnt compare. its much slower, less contact, much less action, and the level of finesse required is barely comparable. definately beats the shit out of baseball and basketball though......... imo

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

Football (ie. soccer) rules!!! though I'm pretty sure it's not because of upsets, it's the skill, the talent, the constant action and the occasional brilliant goal. Oh and compared to all the American sports, you can't get away with mediocrity...

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

and just to add to this debate, the only reason Americans don't enjoy soccer is because American soccer sucks balls...it's just not the same game as played in the rest of the world.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!

i think its just that most americans just plain don't understand the game. i have a feeling most people who bash the game couldn't explain the off-sides rule, or answer how many yellows make up a red? couple that with the fact its normally low scoring and most people get extremely exhausted just watching someone run around for that long. do you think the most obese country in the world is going to accellerate at the sport where you have to be perhaps the fittest to participate in?

Perhaps... or it could just be that it's painfully boring compared to hockey, american football, ncaa basketball, lacrosse, rugby, ping pong, curling, bowling, tennis, poker (apparently that's a sport here now...not my quote) jai alai, greyhound racing, putt putt, flip football, jarts, darts, bouncing quarters into shot glasses, toss across, that stupid game tossing bean bags into a small hole cut into big wood boxes, horseshoes, kick the can, paintball, and even FIGURE SKATING.

That being said I do enjoy having a Jameson, a pint of proper and catching a match with my english mate Tony at one of the Irish pubs here in town every once in awhile....

Agree.... I probably come across as a basher but in reality I'd love to see an elite match in Europe... I've been to an MLS game here (Columbus) and, well..... at least I had a flask.
