I agree with anonin. College basketball is probably one of the most entertaining sports to watch aside MMA fighting i.e. Pride, UFC, or K-1.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
i just think soccer is a lot like minimal techno, at first its hard to understand, but once you learn the nuances of it, you realize how complex and intricate it can be and you possibly gain appreachiation from that.
the game isn't as straight forward as say...basketball. a game that is very simple to follow.
but heres a question for the brits: why in england is cricket so big but i doubt any american on this board can rattle of 5 crickett players names even.

I knew this thead would start the bitching, but 3 pages already?!
i have never watched the world cup. i gave soccer a shot when andy newland was over here in NY at my house and i couldnt watch more than 3-5 minutes at a time.
So why even bother coming into this thread to comment? You clearly know the square root of fuck all about the sport, and are not willing to give it a chance. There's a reason it is by FAR the most popular sport in the world, from either a participation or viewing figures point of view.
I said it before, go and watch the Champions League final of last May for a good example why.
I love most sports, US ones included, but footy is the game for me. Off to Germany in June for the big one. Come on Rooney!

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
European Football is the game that the entire world loves. The World Cup and European Championships are the highest watched games up there with the Olympics.
I love the egalitarian nature of soccer. That a poor African country might upset a European powerhouse on any given day is a real occurrence. Why? Because you need no special equipment and it is the cheapest sport. People play in the streets of Rio and are able to compete with individuals who attended the best academies of Europe.
In response to those who say it is boring, I say to each his own, but consider this. Soccer is the ultimate endurance test. David Beckham once had a monitor strapped to him by addidas, and they found that he ran an average of 12 to 14 km per game. I know some pitchers in baseball or some NFL linemen who can't even walk that in ten years!
Other than fitness, soccer is the ultimate strategic chessgame. Sure goal percentage is low compared to basketball, but rather than scoring every trip, you see the genuine setup and counter-movement of what amounts to a living chess-board. If you view it in this sense it is very interesting and all the more special when there is a breakthrough and they score. A build up with great pay off and emotional release like this: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
..... best sport ever, in fact i dont know why we have to call it "soccer", you were the ones that ran out of creativity and stole the name from the proper football, from now on you should call to your sport "american football", thats what it is...you should try watching european football you might like it you never know.
just for the record, im not "sport billy" but i do like almost every sport, espn (latinamerica) could be the best invention on tv since the color appeared on it. american espn sucks ass, its only about basketball, baseball and golf... not even hockey.

football and hockey are the best i also like biathlon to watch at home
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
Pelo was right, it's simply a matter of taste. for it's martial arts, and where other people think it gets fucking boring when the fight goes to the ground, I see a whole range of techniques and problems, while someone less interested sees 2 guys wrestling down there for a long time without anything happening.
It just depends on the way you look at it. Same goes for every other sport IMO.
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
I love playing soccer, and still play in an over 18 mens league every fall, but I have to admit it can be boring to watch.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
Football (Soccer) is great. If you grow up with it like I did (grew up in a small town where EVERYBODY is mad about Football), you have it in your soul. Nothing better to be in a 40.000 people stadium and watch your local team win. I also really love the international championships, be it Champions League/UEFA-Cup or the World Championship/European championship/South Africa/America Cup or whatever. You see awesome players and people from all over the world and for 90 minutes, it?s all about the same thing. :p I also watched American Football and Baseball mostly in German army camps living 10 minutes away from an american barrack and we had a lot of them in Kaiserslautern (near Rammstein). But also Frankfurt has a pretty good (American) Football team called Frankfurt Galaxy http://www.frankfurt-galaxy.de/ and over 30.000 people are watching the Games regularly and I try to watch at least one game per season as well. It's something completely different but not bad either but there is no chance for another sports besides Football before the 36 hour day was invented.
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
it's ok to like more then one sport.
just because you like the NFL, doesn't mean you can't like the premier league.
it's almost like a prog vs electro thread.
it's just not ok to like figure skating.
those blouses the guys wear just make them look fruity and i will not support that or any other 'sport' that relies soley on biases judges opinions.
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
I find the whole premise of scientists researching and then telling us what the most exciting sport is way beyond humorous. Why of course, who knows more about sports then scientists? I wonder if the scientists factored in flying flares, bottles, riots, angry mobs climbing fences, murders, stadiums burning down during games, fans crushed rushing gates, injured players writhing on the ground and then being hauled off on stretchers only to return five minutes later under their own power, no offense, the number of one name mullet hair players etc into their equations? Don't get me wrong... I find soccer, err, football veeeeeeery exciting. Especially knowing I could die just watching it. Wheeeee!

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
I was watching the Rose Bowl last night between USC-Texas. A great championship game...perhaps even the best I've seen...at least in a long time.
It suddenly occurs to me why I enjoy watching football, ie. soccer...though I tend to call the American leagues soccer and the rest of the world's leagues football, cause truthfully they're just not playing the same game in the US as they do elsewhere, their run and shoot style seems to lack the strategy that the rest play...
anyways, getting back to the point, the reason is the non-stop action of the sport, the endurance the players must have is just insane. Plus as an added bonus, it cuts down on the bullshit that the announcers tend to talk about in between plays of american sports and also practically cuts out all commercials.
the reason is the non-stop action of the sport. Plus it cuts down on the bullshit that the announcers tend to talk about in between plays of american sports
Non-stop action yet the announcers tend to talk less. Translation: nothing happening.
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
Non-stop action yet the announcers tend to talk less. Translation: nothing happening.
I didn't say they talk less, I said they talk less bullshit!
Translation: Like they have to give you the military history of every American football (pro or college) player's family during the game or madden talking bout his thanksgiving dinner...you know bullshit. ;)
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
nobody is worse at that then the olympics. oh my god watching the olympics is the most painful thing ever and i'd rather sit and watch 5 hours of childberth.
does anyone even care that its an olympic year?

Well for hockey yes.... however there's something just downright wrong with the two man luge. Kinda like two guys riding a motorcycle or sharing an umbrella.

Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
lol.
it's not the events that bother me as much as the constant background information on all these athletes you've never heard of it. i mean events like figure skating and shit like that can just go away right now, but they spend more time doing segments on athletes then they do showing the actual events.
i dont give a shit about some figure skater from bolkinictinstan and how her father was in the war and never came home and her mother was forced into prostitution and had to give the little skater up for a adoption and she couldnt afford a real pair of skates until she was 13 and blah blah blah blah stupid olympics
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
i could give a fuck about figure skating too, and golf... think they are boring as hell. but i find tennis entertaining, unlike most people i talk to... so once again, different strokes' :p
Re: Soccer the most exciting sport - FACT!
