Something big is going down in Egypt.. I will admit I haven't read much on this yet, does anybody have a clue?

I hear they are rounding up the Muslim Brotherhood. If that is the case this should get real interesting.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

La revolution that has been expected from the pressure people feel there, people in egypt have been boiling from the harsh living standards and the crazy things they see around them, you see poverty and extravagant sitting right next to each other in traffic, people throwing food, and people that cant even find bread, just too much has been happening in the past 20 years and they want the president to resign after 30 years of ruling.

how can the US support a dictator like this? 30 years in power.

Shit is getting real over there that is for sure

because he's a HUGE strategic ally? he's kept out the soviets and he's kept out the radical and violent islamists.

any idea who would replaced mubarek if he was removed?

naturally, the stability of the middle east is a GOOD thing. if you've got an anti-semitic lefty dictator (the one, I'd assume, you'd prefer) stirring the shitpot out there, that's a bad thing. mubarak has kept good relations with israel as well as his predecessor had, to similar degrees.

in b4 "jews control the US" because that's precisely your next, pathetic, move.

well, his predecessor had gone to war with israel and kicked em out of the land in 1973, then the treaty was signed due to several other reasons and unwillingness from the other arab countries to support him to get them outta the area completely...so he signed the treaty and of course the US had a big role in this treaty.

if you are going to do this just because it is cnn, then that is ignorant.

cnn has been liveblogging this all day today and interspersing video from people on the ground who happen to get video out. if you think this is part of the illuminati conspiracy....well then....

I'm not saying they are perfect, but it is better than nothing at all.

I've decided that I'm against this uprising. I think Obama needs to stay publicly neutral, but tell mubarek to do what is necessary to put down the protesters.

I don't like CNN that's all.

I think something is up with this Egypt situation. I'm very surprised to see they are going after the Brotherhood. I think the rebellion is justified. Imagine if Jimmy Carter was still the President of the US? 30 years you are a Dictator!
what does Obama have to do with this? world police again?, your seeing this world from your own eyes and not as it is, what do you know about egypt and whats been happening/happened there to decide against this uprising?
What does Obama have to do with this? oh i dunno, the whole world tuned into his press sec. today to see where the American's were on this situation. Not england. Not germany. Not russia, australia, canada, and so on. The United. Fucking. States. Says a lot, really.

I have no hat in this ring and as always, I remain objective. I think Mubarak needs to shut down this uprising for several reasons.

 1. the destruction already caused is going to cost tons of money to rebuild.
 2. the tourism industry is severely damaged now, and few people will want to come into egypt to do business or travel. loss of even more money
 3. I have EXTREME doubts that what will replaced Mubarak will be a more democratic and more secular government. It seems history conveys the point that a more radical, more islamist government will take place. This is bad news for the region. (see: tsarist russia, iran 1979 for good examples).
 4. the muslim brotherhood will be allowed to roam freely in egypt once again. and there's a good shot they'll have some controlling stock in the outcome of a new government. are we really going to pretend there aren't anti-democratic islamists who are developing strategies right now??? Power vacuums are terrible, as we've seen in Iraq. Had the revolution (not just a riot anymore!) been pushed forward with secular egyptian leadership backing it, then my tune would change. But that's not the case - we have tens of thousands of teenagers and young men running wild around Cairo and other parts of egypt. there is no organization to their movement which makes them susceptible to being controlled down the road. at the very least, there will be multiple factions vying for control. it will be very chaotic.

the best course, for now, is for mubarak to continue running the show but making significant reforms.

i get the sense that this is analogous to having unprotected sex with a very attractive woman, having an amazing orgasm, then finding out a few weeks later you've got gonorrhea.

btw, with the suez canal blocked, shit is going to get REALLY real.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

Mariner the only people asking Obama what he is gonna do is the American War Machine (AKA The American Media). So don't get so excited.

The US media is just sitting there begging for more war "Are you gonna go Obama? Whatcha gonna do Obama? Send in some tomahawks and airstrikes? Marines....."

#1458736Post 25 of 230

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

the us ain't gonna send in airstrikes against citizens of its closest ally in the middle east silly ass. so you can't play the black and white war machine card with this one. the us wants to support the uprising, but also can't go too far as they want a gov't that has been as open to the us as the one that has been in place for 30 years. and also im sure like mariner pointed out they have to be careful of a power struggle which could lead to hardliners taking over.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

Here is former Secretary of State Condoleezza demonstrating what real moral clarity sounds like at a speech at the American University in Cairo in June 2005.

Axelrod is trying to spin the idea that obama actually didn't give up on egypt since his 2009 speech in cairo.....ah, how they try to re-write history.

#1458762Post 27 of 230

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

Axelrod is the chief architect of propaganda for this admin, though the tentacles reach far and wide. I'm not a fan of Condoleeza either, to be fair, as she's been involved in her own games of deception (I'm not discounting the above speech, btw, as I've yet to listen).

Interesting fact on the self-proclaimed leader of the protest movement in Egypt: Mohamed ElBaradei belongs to Zbigniew Brzezinski/George Soros’ International Crisis Group globalist think tank and appears on their website as being on the board of trustees. He was also a UN IAEA director as well as a Nobel Peace Prize recipient – another goon of globalism.

#1458811Post 28 of 230

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

well some good changes has been made as per the vice president and minstry, but now im against the uprising as well but for different reasons and i care less about tourism now since they need to take care of their country first, now the scumbags of the country (thiefs, rapists,...) are taking advantage of this and their robbing houses and stores and just plain shit is happening, there is not a single cop down there this is complete madness, the army is making its way to cover the city but man its a mess. first it was a pointful revolution an the needs have been met and now its more like new york's black out, the early protestors were the ones defending the country against the fukin scumbags, people in cairo now are standing in the streets infront of their buildings to protect it from these attacks

JIM LEHRER: The word -- the word to describe the leadership of Mubarak and Egypt and also in Tunisia before was dictator. Should Mubarak be seen as a dictator?

JOE BIDEN: Look, Mubarak has been an ally of ours in a number of things and he's been very responsible on, relative to geopolitical interests in the region: Middle East peace efforts, the actions Egypt has taken relative to normalizing the relationship with Israel.

And I think that it would be -- I would not refer to him as a dictator.

ok. biden says he's not a dictator. i think you could make a case for that, and i think you could make a case against it too. it really doesn't matter to me because either way you slice it, whatever mubarek is, is certainly preferable to 1) chaos and 2) an incredibly more radicalized islamic country. Lettuce be bananas, there aint no thomas jefferson coming around to lead egypt into a more democratic and secular future.

Proof you ask:

http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/articles/brmiddleeastnafricara/346.php?nid=&id=&pnt=346

over 2/3rd's of egyptians support a more restrictive sharia based government.

Some people are so terribly happy at watching people fight a dictator for 'democracy' without ever considering the consequences that this will ultimately have and I believe will actually play out.

Might as well say it: this is pretty much going to be a new front in the war on terror unless a miracle happens at this point.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

wow Mariner I am very surprised to see how pro Dictator you are.. You even came out and validated your absurdness by saying it is better than chaos...etc..

The US supports dictators.. Fact. So going to war to spread democracy is such a joke.

Oh ya and by the way Egypt is its own sovereign nation. If they don't like the leadership they can change it to whoever they want.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

Pro Dicatator? Or anti-chaos and anti-caliphate? I already explained that I don't give Mubarak carte-blanche. Guy needs to change, or replaced. But seeking revolution with NOBODY but an obvious radical muslim group to seal the power vacuum is without question a worse option. So, i choose Mabarak conditionally.

"democracy" is also a joke. Tyranny of the majority. but democracy is certainly preferable to theocracy....don't you think? no?

Why are you pro theocracy?

Of course they can change it. But lettuce be applejacks, the uneducated youth of that country don't know shit, don't care about consequences, and don't have a long-term perspective. Didn't you learn a lesson with Obama? I'm afraid this is going to be disastrous, and i certainly hope to fuck that I'm wrong.

Here's a game: obama supports the youth revolution. do you, the person who thinks he is always wrong....cede a point that he's correct here?

edit: one more thing:

this could be egypt's finest moment, or a turning point towards it's reversion to religious totalitarianism.

initially, the secular protests got my hope up. but now that it's taken a more religious tone, a more violent one (unnecessarily violent - really, museums? burning buildings?), my doubts are now verified.

makes me wonder what the status of the jails are right now...

I not totally pro democracy either I am a big believer in a republic. You must protect the minority.

It is to be expected that the arab worlds would go towards Islam because it is in their nature. Also the West hasn't done a good enough job of selling Democracy. If you want people to think like you and have similar beliefs give them a better lifestyle and they will believe you. Give them a worse lifestyle then you get what you get.

I think the whole arab world is a disaster. It is just one dictator after another (house of Saud, Mubarek, Ali Khamenei). Egypt seems to be revolting because they are sick of the dictator.
