Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

while i dont agree with everything that Obama has done, i would say if you where expecting for everything to be fixed in the first 6 months of any president, being democrat or republican, than you are a very naive person.

most of the times i really dont like getting in arguments with people about politics because i truly dont care about the mater, but when you start noticing how mis-informed people are, and how easy it is for the media to sway peoples mindset with simple healines like "Is Nancy Pelosy Calling us Nazis?" then you really start to worry about how ignorant our general population is.

#1255967Post 45 of 160

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

I wouldn't call it "ignorance of the general population" but rather "ignorance of the media." The media pushes stories hard and all they have to do is say "what people are really talking about..." as if they care what the people are talking about. They make the talking points by using statments like that.

I don't think Obama is like Hitler at all. I would say he is closer to Mussolini. Hitler is not a fair comparison at all and the fact that the media keeps bringing up Hitler is stupid because rather than finding who Obama is like they just go to the extreme and say Hitler to piss off Obama supporters. I genuinely think that US citizens are very frustrated and are lashing out but because they are stupid, they lash out to the extreme side (Hitler). Mussolini was all about the merger of gov't and the private sector. That is where i would compare them. Hitler was a psychotic murderer.

Lets face it the average US citizen and Canadian citizen is retarded when talking about politics. Hell Canadians typically run for the doors when discussing politics.

Getting involved helps and more voters turned out for Obama's election than ever, young voters too, not just minorities...that's a positive step for the electorate process...Now we've got really tough issues that have to be faced now, not later.

I do think that as a society we have honestly begun to get a grasp on what needs to happen in order to make things better economically, but I don't think any of us should expect things to get back to where they were a few years ago.

And rightfully so, the market was on a collision course with time, ask any investor with an IQ 3-5 years ago, they saw it coming and knew prices and values were ridiculously inflated.

At least we have a president who can communicate.

i do agree with you on that, that the media just pushes so damn hard on some of these issues that people just end up believing them, but that's where the ignorance comes in, because you have people that can look you straight in the face and say that they get their news from Bill O Reily, or Limbaugh, where it would be the same as people saying, i get my news from AirAmerica and Jon Stewart.
spend spend spend and unemployment rises, house value falls yet wh says we are out of recession!

suprise some of u aint seeing this.

wtf is going on in the us is realy getting to the point of being absurd!
You seem to think, like many people, that when the economy is improving, then that must mean by definition that unemployment must be falling - that it is a tight 1-to-1 relationship. But did you know that at the end of ar ecession it is quite possible - normal, even - to have positive economic growth (i.e., positive quarter-on-quarter GDP growth) even while unemployment still rises and other asset values decline for a while longer? Back in the recession of 2001, official statistics show that the unemployment rate didn't peak until 19 months after the recession officially ended.

Take a look at this graph from the National Bureau of Economic Research. Notice how the unemployment typically rate keeps growing well past the period where economic growth turns positive? http://www.metrodenver.org/files/images/metro-denver-economy/RisingUnemployment2.jpg

Now why is that? Part of it likely has to do with the methodology that the NBER uses to determine when a recession ends and what the unemployment rate is. But a big part of it is because after a recession, growth tends to first come from increases in productivity. That means that typically investment resumes, technology improves, etc. before people start being hired back en masse. Eventually, employment will rebound, but it is not a tight, immediate relationship - and certainly not one that Obama can just quickly change from the Oval Office.

I would also add that recessions - particularly a deep one such as this - are caused by a confluence of factors that extend way before Obama's time. And these problems can't be turned around on a dime; the economy does not work like a light switch. It takes time for consumers and businesses to deleverage themselves financially and come to trust where the "bottom" is - i.e., that the vast majority of losses out there have been realized. And so it's going to be a long road until things are back to where they were - and I think that road would pretty much be the same regardless of who you have as President.

His spending decisions...now that's a bit of a different debate...

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

I get uncomfortable even talking about recovery. Fannie and Freddie need another $10 Billion? It is like watching the same movie. Watch in 6 months Goldman and Citi will need more money. This recovery talk is nonsense and to believe in it is like believing in the tooth fairy. Commercial Real Estate is hanging on by a thread and the dollar crisis hasn't cooled down yet between the Chinese and the US. China doesn't believe you will pay them back..

I think the overall message from the American people is that they want their jobs back. They couldn't care if companies are making money by slashing jobs. They want to make money too. They feel betrayed and the anger is coming out in these town halls. All that built up aggression, I hope it cools down though. A tipping point might happen over the next few months.

#1256078Post 50 of 160

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

^^ I don't disagree that recovery right now is shaky at best. I'm certainly not saying that recovery is here and that things will soon go back to the way they were; my point was more of a general one about how economic cycles work with respect to unemployment. A lot of economists are saying that this could be much more of an "L-shaped" recession than the more traditional "U-shaped"...meaning that we might not see a return to good old growth - it might be closer to flat or very anemic growth at best for a while. And of course, it's always tricky to say when a recession ends, because you can only make the best assessment once you're already well past it and looking back at the data.

And what is this crap about spying and notifying the White House if you see something fishy. The liberals would have went nuts if George W.'s admin. did something like this. The Democrats are showing they are just as corrupt and bad as the Republicans.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2030790/flagwhitehousegov_a_snitch_line.html

which i think its a pretty dumb move, but if you really think about its mostly a way for them to stop spreading false information, still i think its a pretty dumb way of doing it.

and about the swastikas, like i pointed out before, if you listen closely to Pelosy's quote, she only says "well, theres people carrying swaskitas and symbols like that, so you be the judge", she didnt say people were acting all nazi like, or that they were wearing swastikas etc etc etc. she's only pointing out the swastikas, which are present in a lot of these town hall meetings.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess
Notice there is a line through the Swastika.
A rational interpretation of that picture is as follows:

The holder of the sign is a protester, and therefore most likely an opponent to Obama's plans.
Thus, the line through the Swastika most likely connotes that she does not want Nazism in the same manner that she does not want Obama's plan.
In other words, that protester is comparing Obama to Hitler.

You follow? So the fact that there is a line through it doesn't make it "better". I think the intent of that swastika with the line through in its reference to Obama it is pretty clear to most people.

On a side note, it's a completely idiotic comparison, of course, even if one is opposed to the proposed health care reforms.

Here's a link for you about labor unions beating up a black man at a town hall. Much worse than vociferous arguments from the right wing.

Yes, both sides should not compare anyone to Hitler or Nazis. The girl with the sign and Pelosi should not compare how evil the Nazis were over a health care debate. To do so, trivializes the millions killed and the holocaust. I wish everyone would stop the Nazi references.

The only thing I would add, though, is that Pelosi was responding based on those cases of the documented footage, and all she said was that there were some people at the rallies going around brandishing stuff with Nazi symbols on them - which is undeniably true. So it's really unfair of you to paint her in the same light as that girl, who was actually the one clearly accusing Obama of being Nazi-like in his policies.

Now, to be clear, I recognize that these are fairly isolated cases we're talking about; I may believe that Republicans and conservative groups help organize these protests online, but I don't actually think that they are telling people to go around carrying swastikas and the like. And I think it's a bad tactic for anyone - hell, Democrats did similar stuff to Bush back in his office term.

By that same token, though, I'm also equally skeptical of your claim that Democrats are telling unions to go around and beat people up. At this point, without clearer evidence, I'm inclined to believe that what happened in St. Louis was an unfortunate, isolated event. I hope that you would recognize that as well.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

This should probably go in a different thread, but since we're talking about economics now...

Here's a great article and time line of events regarding Blackstone. I urge anyone who understands investing to read it...I came across it doing some research on Blackstone's monetization of their west cost office portfolio in 2007 ...I realized the timing was too good early last year.

(Schwarzman is the CEO/Pres of Blackstone) January 28, 2009 http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=aJJx48OeDvX0&refer=home While Schwarzman masterfully timed the top of the market in 2007, buying companies at the bottom will prove tricky. Blackstone has never faced a recession like today’s. Unlike the eight-month U.S. contraction in 2001, which was caused by the bursting of the dot-com bubble, the current downturn is global -- encompassing banking, manufacturing, retailing and housing -- and longer lasting.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

good opinion article, summarizes how I feel about this:

http://www.brookings.edu/opinions/2009/0721_health_reform_gale.aspx
Choosing to finance health care reform by taxing the rich is bad economic policy, bad health policy, bad budget policy and poor leadership.

It is bad economic policy because, coupled with the scheduled expiration of the Bush tax cuts, it would raise marginal tax rates by 10 percentage points for high-income households. While I object to the general hue and cry that occurs anytime anyone discusses any potential tax increase for the rich, it is nevertheless quite fair to say that a 10 percentage point increase in taxation on the return to labor and capital income is a lot and shouldn’t be the first choice. (But please spare me the argument that every hike in the top tax rate would kill the small business sector.)

It is bad health policy because we need to fix the structural problems in health care in order to cut costs and be able to expand coverage. One of the biggest structural problems is the non-taxation of employer-provided health care. Fixing that – converting it to a refundable fixed credit, which was originally suggested by my colleague Jason Furman, now deputy director of the National Economic Council, and then by John McCain during the campaign last year – would not only raise a lot of money, it would improve incentives for health care. Taxing the rich does not address this issue at all – it may raise the same amount of revenue but it does not address the incentive problem that arises from non-taxation of employer-provided health care.

It is bad budget policy because we are using up one of our options on the revenue side -- not to cut the deficit -- but to finance new spending. We need to save our powder for deficit reduction activities: use the change in tax treatment of employer-sponsored health care to finance health care and use general revenue increases to finance general deficit reductions.

It is poor leadership because it furthers the myth that we can solve our fiscal problems by taxing “other” people or with “gimmick” taxes. It has been said many times already and will be said many times again: we are going to need broad based tax increases and spending cuts to bring the fiscal house into order, and the more politicians continue to act as if we can just foist the financing on a small group (be it rich people or foreign corporations or obese people or people who drink soda, etc.), the worse are our prospects for solving the problems.

If we want to seriously reform the health care system, we need our politicians to get serious with some sensible policies.
#1256523Post 65 of 160

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess
????

Please explain in layman terms...thank you.
A lot of health care spending tied to your employer comes with tax exempt status. That is, in essence, a huge handout from Uncle Sam - in fact, I understand that it is one of the largest, if not the largest subsidies out there. Opponents of this generally argue at three things: (1) this subsidy is poorly targeted, because it most benefits the wealthy who are the one who least need it; (2) it provides poor incentives for people to be the smartest consumers they could in their own health care; (3) it impedes flow in the labor market because people fear losing their great, subsidized coverage through their employer; and (4) it costs us a hell of a lot in foregone government revenue, which matters when you're talking about how to finance stuff.

Basically, it's one key area that some economists say we should focus in order to get at structural problems with health care rather than just adding new changes on top of the old problems and taking incremental dollars out of peoples' pockets.

It also underscores that this stuff is complicated as hell - I'm sure no expert on it - and I'd guess that most Americans who are out there protesting it don't even have very good arguments for WHY they oppose it...other than to say it's "Socialism".

#1256525Post 66 of 160

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

^^ of course. What's the difference between the government foregoing tax vs. collecting the tax as they otherwise would normally be entitled to do and then just handing you a big check every year? Putting issues like interest aside for this example, It's the same net cash outflow from the government's pocket either way - in other words, a subsidy.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess
So then this brookings guy is suggesting add employer funded healthcare to income. Tax it then give it back as a credit?

Ugh.
Yeah, something like that... The argument is that when it's given to you as a credit, you now have an incentive to try to manage your health care as best as you can since you get to keep whatever you don't use - thus putting your skin in the game to help keep costs from growing. Also, when you get it it's yours and isn't tied to your employer...or the government, for that matter. So you have more flexibility to take it with you and do what you want with it. This is the core of what John McCain was proposing when he campaigned for President.

Personally, I'm split on this one...I probably should have said that this is the one point in the guy's article where I'm not so closely aligned with him. I'd be amenable to a different structure, but I definitely don't like the way Obama is proposing to finance his plan right now...it points to ominous signs about the long term effectiveness of his plan imo.

And so it supposedly continues... I wonder how many of these people who are turning these debates into shouting matches actually even understand the health care system and how this plan would actually work - or if they just ate up some soundbite offered to them somewhere from the media.

Personally, I think that anyone who comes to these things and is disruptive to the point of impeding actual productive dialogue should just be thrown out on their ass. You can have your freedom of speech - outside - while the rest of us actually try to put our heads together and take a rational approach to figuring out what to do.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

Miro I think what you are seeing is the frustration of the American people. Think about it. They voted a Democrat House and Senate when Bush was in power because the Dems promised to get out of Iraq. They didn't deliver. Then everyone wanted Bush out of office and Obama promised the world. He hasn't delivered. They don't need to see the bill because the past shows that no matter what it is, the American people feel it will screw them. It is like being a sales rep. Some people think I am a crook and selling a scam (When i sell cable, home phone, internet).

They are pissed and feel that the gov't will fuck them because history says they will. Everyone also knows that your gov't is the most corrupt and to put health care in their hands doesn't feel like a safe bet.

To be honeset I am watching the news right now and they are saying that there is confusion about the facts. If the dems can't sell the plan and give the facts straight up then it is their fault. It is a hard sell that you will give them better health care at cheaper prices. Everyone knows that is a lie.

They should also stop calling people Nazi's and turn the 1000 pages into a powerpoint or simple youtube video explaining it to the T. Simple answers

How it will affect them? In plain english.

Pros/Cons?

Wait times in hospitals? Tell the truth it. Wait times will go up so don't lie about it.

Why is it 1000 pages? Everyone knows that sounds porked up(for people who won't read it and go against it). I'm not for 10 pages either but 1000 seems like a lot considering the law of the entire land was founded on way less.

Everyone should receive an email of the powerpoint or create a facebook account that you have on the news every night with the powerpoint attached. Have different attachments

How it will affect you:

 1. Seniors 65+
 2. Middle Aged 35-64
 3. Ages 20-34
 4. Kids

And break it the fuck down in plain english. Don't just have a propaganda war.

To say I want the people that caused this to get out of the way when your ratings are 50% means you just pissed off 50% of americans. Not very bi partisan at all. The smooth talker Obama has been messing up lately.
Liberal media continues racist talk. Says that Socialist is a code word for the N-word. Obama pushing race again. This race call is getting out of hand.
how is this "Obama pushing race again"? just because one dude from the media is saying this, it automatically means that its coming straight from Obamas office?

the one thing this guy is right about is when he says, " More credible conservatives have to stand up and say that there is a line that has to be drawn" how can you say, these folks are just pissed and just about had it with Obama, when dude basically just took office a couple of months back. but nobody is willing to look at these conservative leaders that are constantly saying that obama is a socialist, that his views are nazi like, etc, like i stated before, shit has to go both ways, if youre gonna criticize one side for being one thing, then you have to look at the other side and also point out the shit they are doing. The dems have to get their facts straight and point out all of these right wingers who are calling for these town hall riots.

About your proposition for Obama to show you the facts, and basically give you a one to one explanation about the health care reform, isnt that what the Town Hall meetings are all about?? arent those done in order for people to ask the questions and concerns?? So in other words, how can they explain to you how this reform is going to work when you are not letting them explain it??

also your other demands are just very un-realistic, like the goverment is gonna start doing all these things just for you to understand.
Obama pushing race again. This race call is getting out of hand.
I know this may come as a big surprise to you... but actually, not every black man you see on TV is named "Obama", nor do they all necessarily speak for President Obama.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

Obama needs to restore confidence in the US gov't to the average American. THey have lost faith in their gov'ts and are lashing out. Lashing out is never rational and that is what you are seeing.

You can't blame Rush for what he says and not blame idiots like that nbc guy of stirring the pot. That was the point I was trying to make. I am sick of hearing about race when that has NOTHING to do with it. The liberal media is turning it into that.

The town halls are not working to say the least and the dems need a new tactic. I was giving suggestions. You guys must admit that the town halls are not working in favor of the dems. They should stop doing them and do something else.

As for things that are "unrealistic" we live in a digital world and you can get in contact with anyone whenever you want through email. If spammers can find me then I'm sure the US gov't could as well.

CJ your last comment just goes to show that you don't know what you are talking about. The white house has a site that you can email and they will respond with an answer. So yes they can do what I was proposing. I'm trying to give solutions to the dems and pointing out facts. They better do something to help people to understand before someone gets shot.

Toasty WTF was a picture of Rosa Parks doing at a health care event?? That is a deliberate attempt to stir up the race issue.

I must admit though that Obama did point out a great point in his speech. FedEx and UPS are doing just fine but Post Office is always broke.. Private sector works. Free market capitallism works.

Re: Town Halls Turn into Town Mess

Race has been brought into the picture since the town halls aren't going well for the Democrats. I guess it's the Obama team's nuclear option. When in doubt shame the other side with racism. Paul Krugman wrote about racism used tacitly towards Obama in his op-ed last week. And I've seen and heard other news analysts claiming racism in the town halls. However, I don't think racism will work this time since most people don't see a logical connection between racism and health care. Hey Obama, it's not all about you, you ego-maniac!
