Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

when you are in the post window, look for the youtube button, it is right below the bold B button. click the youtube button. if you scroll over it, it will say "wrap tags around selected text." clicking that will make the brackets appear below. then just copy your choice youtube url (not the embedded option though) and paste it in between the brackets, and bingo! it will appear in text at first, but when you "submit reply" it will show the video in the post. not the cleanest directions but hopefully that helps.
Right, and the UK knife bans have worked so well:roll:
And this relates to present discussion on American gun ownership how ??? But an Australian strengthening of gun control which did have positive results, does relate. :)

This is a gun issue "not a a world against America" issue
see how that works? plur mannnnn.
I didn't think it worked actually.
Exactly, the government needs to crack down on the illegal arms trading, not on the citizens of the US who legitimately and legally hold firearms. But I guess none of these self-righteous world lovers ever followed the DC gun ban overturn. If you don't like guns, fine, but don't come barking up our tree telling us we shouldn't have them and that we're logically inept for having them.

Once again you try to turn this into an anti American thing. One thing these forums have taught me is that there are many, many different opinions held by Americans on all issues. And thankfully there are many, many who disagree with you on this issue.

It has nothing to do with being America, we just don't like to see you killing yourselves. It's anti gun thing , not an anti American thing.

Once you strip away the rhetoric we get back to the fact that if you are any ordinary householder that owns a gun , you are far more likely to die from a gun, and there is a very good chance the gun will be yours.

The most apparent thing about the 2nd amendment is the controversy about the interpretation. Apparently a lot of American critics as well as foreign critics don't agree with a lot of the posters here. :)

Car owners are most likely to be killed by their own cars too. Let's get rid of them.

See, everything has its risks. Let's keep the ban-train in the station.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

MJDub, Pretty disingenuous analogy that seems to get used a lot! :)

Killing people is a byproduct of car useage, usually brought about by misuse of the car. Whereas gun deaths are when the gun, particularly the hand gun, is doing exactly what it was designed to do! Kill people!!

I haven't actually asked for a ban, I would love it, I'm realistic to know that couldn't work, but to just keep quoting the 2nd amendment isn't working either. If you care, looking at sensible regulation is the way to go.
Once again you try to turn this into an anti American thing. One thing these forums have taught me is that there are many, many different opinions held by Americans on all issues. And thankfully there are many, many who disagree with you on this issue.
It's not an anti-American thing, it's a lack of historical perspective which the world doesn't want to acknowledge. Those people that call themselves Americans, who don't agree with most of the Constitution, are nothing more than Americans who have never read it.

Those same Americans are the ones that bitch when local governments put up speeding cameras, and then, and only then, do they want protection from the constitution in the form federal jurisdiction or the 6th amendment.

You know the demographics of the people that voted for prop 8 in California? A significant majority of the people that voted were democrats. And guess what, they know jack shit about the Constitution and its amendments otherwise they would not have voted for it in the first place.

So your presumption that most disagree will be in large part due their baselessness in American history. If you don't like guns, fine, but like I said, don't bark up my tree about it. And I made that pretty dam clear. And I urge you to talk to your local American the next time you're here to see how much they know about their own document that gives them the liberties that they have.
It has nothing to do with being America, we just don't like to see you killing yourselves. It's anti gun thing , not an anti American thing.
And it turns into an anti American thing because you don't understand the viewpoint from a conservative perspective. We have our weapons for a reason, we already established that--you guys just don't like that we do and so the typical liberal vs. conservative battle starts.
Once you strip away the rhetoric we get back to the fact that if you are any ordinary householder that owns a gun , you are far more likely to die from a gun, and there is a very good chance the gun will be yours.
When you get a razor, you're more likely to cut yourself. When you get a radio, you're more likely to shock yourself. When you get ant spray, you're more likely to ingest toxins. There's a risk to everything. Life isn't failproof.
The most apparent thing about the 2nd amendment is the controversy about the interpretation. Apparently a lot of American critics as well as foreign critics don't agree with a lot of the posters here. :)
Like who? You said you posted articles regarding the homicide stats but you didn't. And great, a lot of American critics don't agree with foreign critics or other American critics. It still doesn't detract from the vitality of such an amendment as a means from repression.

Guns and knives are both tools. A ban for one works in one country and a ban for one does not work in the other country. It's highly relevant to the thread. In fact, what I've been reading, crime really hasn't changed and it has only been substituted by other forms of weapons. And there lies the problems, you can get rid of guns, but then what's next to substitute it?

No, a gun, like a car, is a tool, and that is all. The person behind it are what do the damage. You can still kill a family with a carbon monoxide and moreso during winter months.

My bad, I guess I skipped over it.

Anyway, so I looked at the statistics which were from 7-13 states, then I looked at the 2005 stats from the CDC. approximately 35k people died from guns in the US. 50-60% of those were suicide. That leaves about 17k gun deaths...out of a population, i don't know, let's say of 250 million for that time. That's roughly .000068% of that theoretical population. This is hardly an epidemic. This is nothing more than a scare tactic. Even if you could spread those numbers to all 50 states, you'd have roughly .02% of the population dying from firearms. Sorry, but this 'incredible stats of homicide deaths' is pure BS. As for suicides? Well, the government isn't in the job of babysitting everyone's emotions.

^ lol at nationalism.

sovereign borders etc. really don't exist anymore, and "america" is just the (most synthetic) centrifugal and centripetal hub in this violent world -- we all know that. blame human nature and weaknesses; not a select "country" and those conservative/constitutional values.

Localizer, it's not even a liberal vs. conservative thing. I'm a pretty liberal guy, but of the educated type, so I think it's more like what you said with it just being a lack of historical perspective. But whatever, this thread isn't going to change any minds or policies, clearly.

appearances are usually deceiving.

you can't jump to conclusions/pass judgments and make hints that a person is living in denial, or about what they actually think, know and do -- across the internet and type.

i for one am not justifying killing or in denial of the reality of the issue. in fact, i'm unduly sympathetic and conscious in full with the epic sorrow and suffering due to gun violence :(. it is sickening what chaos and atrocities are ensuing the world over, due to firearms. ther is no doubting that. that doesn't mean goodness has to relinquish its sword, not never.

I just want things to be better than they are, and the only way that can happen is if people look forward instead of backwards. All the way through this I have been putting up facts and responding to the actual things people say. No assumptions at all! And trying to keep on actual topic.

When people chose to say there isn't a problem when the facts and figures clearly say there is, don't you think that is denial?? Go back objectively and see how many people have chosen not to address the real issues.

I usually am not one to speak my mind. But on the issue of guns I can not help it.

What reason are guns made for? Murder and mayhem?

I mean I just bought a gun specifically designed for duck hunting. I shoot it at ducks. DUCKS!! Just so you know I hit maybe one out of every fifty that fly in. Every one who owns a gun is not some hillbilly ready for the revolution. .

Some one must load the gun. Aim the gun. And Fire the gun.

People kill people. Not guns!!!!!!!! It is better to have a gun and never have to use that gun. Then to not have a gun and find yourself in a position where that gun might save your life and that of your family.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens
i owned a gun. i have a carrying permit for a handgun in NY state and FLorida. this has nothing to do with protection of home, ganster nonsense, or anything else.

i was often carrying large amounts of cash for clients in regards to payroll and deposits when i worked in accounting. honestly, i think i carried it three times and never had more than a bullet. after awhile of not using it, i realized i have a better chance of being hit by lightning and i wasnt operating in harlem. i turned it in to the police and told them to sell it for charity.

i have a odd POV on guns. BAN ALL HANDGUNS. simple all out ban. only let manufactrurers sell to police and military.

allow large rifles. hunting shotguns, etc. you cant hide these, they provide the same protection for the home. and people have the right to hunt. i love hunting.

but anything that can be hidden in a jacket or pants should simply not be allowed.
I generally tend to disagree with you but this is spot on. p.s. my family owns tons of weapons but we only ever use rifles... for hunting. I think nobody fired a handgun for about ten years.

#1151037Post 155 of 158

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

i dont own one but my parents own a lot.

i dont see myself owning one in the near future but i might get one for home protection when i get older and get my own place.

my dad hand made a rifle when he was younger, so i will definitely take that when he keels over for sentimental value.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

Well living in Nevada, where Shosh resides as well, it is pretty common for gun owners to have personal concealment permits might go hand in hand with all the money floating around the city at any given moment, second of all the culture in Vegas is a bit old wild west style, there are plenty of other counties in Nevada that find driving around with a loaded shotgun in the truck practical. While getting past all the potential stereotypes, a lot of my friend really just enjoy going out to shoot their guns, there is plenty of open space out from the city, where I can participate in firing assualt rifles, shotguns, and high powered handguns. I admit there was some of unease at first when try some shooting, but there is a bit of power that makes you want to shoot some more, blow up can, computer screens, the same kind of crap kids would do with bb guns as teenagers, having a handgun myself took a while to get use to in fact it stays locked up most of the time for fear if I should get really whacked out on drugs or get paranoid my old lady might use it on me, sounds weird, but I grew up around white trash people who use to settle their differences in that manner, anyway, Firearms provide me with a twisted sense of stress relief and power for the legality issues, guns do kill many people, but so is heart disease, strokes, cancer, all various forms of substance abuse, the large black layers of pollutions over most of the industrialized places in the world. Just never hang around with people on drugs who are drunk, with firearms in the house, so basically if Shosh invites over for drinks you should be weary.
