Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

I was wondering how many on here own a gun. I bring this up because I was in Michigan on Saturday for my family X-mas party and we started talking about guns. Apparently I am the only one in my family that doesn't have a gun (because I live in Canada).

Do you believe in guns for protection?

Or do you think guns are for barbaric meat heads?

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

I don't own a gun, but I have thought about getting one to have for protection. I have no problem with people owning guns for their own protection or for hunting, sport, etc., but I've never understood the need for assault rifles and things of the like, or the folks that have massive armories in their homes (collectors excluded).

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

i owned a gun. i have a carrying permit for a handgun in NY state and FLorida. this has nothing to do with protection of home, ganster nonsense, or anything else.

i was often carrying large amounts of cash for clients in regards to payroll and deposits when i worked in accounting. honestly, i think i carried it three times and never had more than a bullet. after awhile of not using it, i realized i have a better chance of being hit by lightning and i wasnt operating in harlem. i turned it in to the police and told them to sell it for charity.

i have a odd POV on guns. BAN ALL HANDGUNS. simple all out ban. only let manufactrurers sell to police and military.

allow large rifles. hunting shotguns, etc. you cant hide these, they provide the same protection for the home. and people have the right to hunt. i love hunting.

but anything that can be hidden in a jacket or pants should simply not be allowed.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

So agree with you on hand guns. Let's face it they are onlymade for one thing, to shoot human beings. !!

Just for the record I really don't like any guns, but what you said here makes so much sense!! :)

The craziest incident that I think about on occasion is the shootings that took place out of the trunk of that guy's car in Virginia Beach in 2003...people wouldn't leave their homes and were afraid to get gas, that was just wild.:what

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

No guns here. Can't think of much of a reason to own one. If someone mugs me on the street, I'm going to give them my wallet and hope they don't kill me, not try to pull a fast one on them and shoot it out Old West style. This is not the movies.

#1140516Post 11 of 158

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

^ Others would pull out the gun in that situation but I'd probably do the same thing you did. The gun is kept in case my life or my family's life is in danger, and here in the phoenix area, crazy shit will happen, especially with road rage.

But I also use it as a stress reliever too when I go to the range.

if hand guns are banned it won't prevent criminals from having and using them, but it will prevent citizens from having them to protect themselves and family!

Totally disagree with that theory. Other countries have bans on guns and you don't see households getting shot up. If your statement were true the US would not have the appalling gun violence rate as they do. Permitting guns has made things worse, not better.

I saw on TV the other day, a Texan family that went into a store to buy an AK47. Comeon really, an AK?

I understand that criminals still get their hands on guns. But, there will certainly be a reduction. Some junkie that is robbing your home probably wouldn't have one if those laws were in (providing it is administered properly). Those are the guys you need to be worried about, not Danny Ocean.

lol at "australia is a free country" what is america then andyniko?

shit, i'll go down in a blazing glory to defend my right to bear arms any day. it is the most vital right we have in this cruel and violent world; it would be foolish to roll over with fainthearted inaction due to sheltered indifference, when the time calls. imo, life is a battlefield -- be prepared and stay on point -- or get spit out.

my pops is a vet and our family is against all violence -- no doubt... but even we keep a small amount of firepower for last resort protection, and the right to defend our individual freedoms. guerrilla warfare ftw.

When someone can turn up to a store and buy an AK47 off the shelf, something is seriously wrong. People in Europe survive without guns, so why can't you? Europe also don't have school shootings and their gun violence in general is far lower. Coincidence? Sure, they're still be violence. It's certainly not the solution, but it is a step in the right direction.

By the way, how often have you had to use your gun? My guess 0. So, in reality they're not so useful. Only to the twisted fucks and crims out there who use it proactively.

Of course it is. It's all relative. Statistics are obviously going to favour another weapon when the other is removed (or heavily reduced) from the equation. Something has to be on top. I'd much rather it be stabbings than shootings.

Stupid article. Sydney people... pffft :D

Ok, one out of how many in comparison? You get my point.

And that point is... if you suddenly remove the ban on guns in Europe, are you going to tell me crime won't increase? Gun crime won't increase? It WILL have some effect, and that effect won't be a decline. It's common sense.

It's very frustrating because then I have to reply to something for no reason. That's all :)

ban or no ban, people always find a way, regardless.

Poor argument. It's a law not a definition of freedom. I guess by legalizing murder and child porn you are more "free" too. Good luck with that.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

If you have a gun you are far more likely to be killed by one, and it is frequently your own. Gun Homicides are considerably higher in households that have guns. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/23/health/23cons.html?scp=1&sq=household+firearms&st=nyt http://www.vpc.org/press/0602rank.htm

America is so far in front of the rest of the developed world in gun homicides it looks far more likely they are being used to commit murder rather than protect any one.

Personally I can't see how anyone in a country with those sort of statistics can defend gun ownership. It has a legitimate role in sports, but you are kidding yourself if you think they are a good defence. You are more likely to be supplying a criminal with a weapon to be used against you.

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

I have a Fass 90 (5.6mm machine gun) in my bedroom, after doing the obligatory military service they give us no choice but to take our weapons home with us so we can use it in case of war. I live in Switzerland... I believe owing a weapon in a modern civilized society is absolute bullshit. The righ to bear arms was conceived at the dawn of the american society which has evolved to become a completely different society.

#1140973Post 37 of 158

Re: Do you own a Gun?? US citizens

Fao all in this thread. A gun owner who is not educated about guns and/or gun safety will more than likely become one of the statistics that you are speaking of.

Agree?

That being said, any idiot can own a gun, or shoot one for that matter.

If you aren't a responsible gun owner, someone is going to get hurt.

Most people, when they get a gun, think that it is alright to be the tough guy and flaunt that they have one. That is when they get killed by someone else who thinks that they have to defend themselves due to the fact that you just waived a gun at them.

If you own a gun, and do not have a concealed weapons permit, that gun should be locked in a safe in your house and kept there.

If you do have a concealed weapons permit, there is a good chance that you have taken some of the knowledge from the concealed weapons course, and are a safer gun owner.

Guns do not kill people, stupid people with guns kill people.
