Re: More cartoon protests

k local i'm sorry i snapped on you a bit.. but I really disagree with the way that your seeing this one.. Rhipkin you said it perfectly (IMO).. That is a scary thought that 20 million are doing this.

Re: More cartoon protests
10 - 20 million that want to destroy the West - that's scary.....

Localizer, I know where you coming from and as I said earlier I have always preached understanding and acceptance. But even you must agree that at some point you need to leave that on the side of the road for abit and stand up and voice your own dissapproval.

Muslims are baying for blood because a depiction of Mohammed was drawn and as a result is an insult to Mohammed and Islam as a whole - well we can't be expected to all know that, we are not Muslim, we do not abide by THEIR laws or rules. Admittedly (and EVERYONE on here agrees) that maybe it was wrong and ignorant of the Norwegian newspaper to potray those images.

Whats wrong with peaceful demonstration, the world would have sympathised with them alot better that way. Instead they go on a rampage while demanding respect from us. How can you take them seriously? How can you expect the "West" to understand and accept when they have no intention of doing the same. That is clear to see in their reactions. We have educated (as in how the west works) Muslims in the "West" who are running around with posters with:

"Europe your 9/11 is coming!!" "Behead those who insult our Prophet!!" "Kill those who demean our Prophet!!"

These are people who have lived and been exposed to Western civilization, they know how we operate yet when the time comes they show us their true side - and that is filled with hate spech, death threats and other comments that paramount to terrorism.

I hate to generalise but seriously with 10 - 20 million Muslims calling for another 9/11 the figures are seriously against them...... and I do not like that.

When 9/11 happened, Muslim's around the world begged the "Western" world to not generalise and that not all Muslims were like that - I'm afraid that number has quickly diminished as more and more Muslims around the world raise their fists and swords at anything Western....

Understanding, education and acceptance MUST come from both sides for it to work. I've sat for hours debating this issue with Muslims in this country and the consensus is the same - "WE must understand where they coming from..." But I'm afraid the same is not extended to us....

Peace :)
You're right, and believe me, I don't like putting up a defense for them. It's dirty, but at the same time, we should all know that the media abuses the privelage they have of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. And where I stand is not the degree of their reaction to the picture but of why Europe would be dumb enough to trigger an avalanche of hate. We know muslims to be fanatics so why does someone (such as the press) always feel the need to perpetuate?

Trust me I'm battling with that one as well. To me I just don't see the need to add fuel to fire. I guess that is the whole point, I need to get information from both sides. The why? And the why not? Maybe the reasons still won't satisfy me and I'll be left in a perpetual state of wondering....lol....

Ah well sometimes the world just doesn't make sense??

Re: More cartoon protests

In your long post you hit the nail on the head Rhipkin, and to Local: I am a fierce defender of my rights, and if cartoons are made of virtually any subject the drawers can find, then Mohammed is among them. The fact that these cartoons were made should not even have to be questioned if one really adheres to freedom of press and speech: they were made, since they too were a subject about which people should think.

Even if we did know it would provoke a reaction like this, we still should not ever refrain from doing it, otherwise our freedom will be hostage to the Islam.

Re: More cartoon protests

The cartoons achieved their aim and that was to provoke and provoke they did.The violent protests were to be expected especially in those countries which aren't very stable. Seriously, what did we expect those protestors to do? Write to members of parliament, hold political/religious debates on TV or perhaps even jump on forums such as this one and try and discuss their issues in a calm and civil manner?

The snowball effect has already begun and It's fairly obvious that Muslims are pissed off and rightly so imo, we invade their countries, kill their people, occupy their lands and resources, destroy their infrastructure, control/choose their governments, label and condemn whole nations as evil, torture their citizens both physically and sexually, tarnish/label Arabs/Muslims as evil/terrorists, we then depict disrespectful images of their prophet under the banner of freedom of expression and amongst all this we've also started or have made plans on attacking Syria and Iran.

The Muslims/Arabs have been under relentless attack by the Western governments and their media since 9/11, so in the context of things, I must say, the Muslim world has handled this pretty well, don't you?

This is not to say I support the violence committed but rather an easily understood reaction by the many who are frustrated/confused and even angry with what and where this is all heading.

#568657Post 51 of 122

Re: More cartoon protests

i totally agree with one cartoon "it's so hard when you are loved by idiots" (something like that)

#568664Post 52 of 122

Re: More cartoon protests

I don't agree with them "handling it well." Handling it well would have seen protests at the person/people who provoked the incident - not KFC, McDonalds, Holiday Inn, Vodafone, innocent "Westerners" in the streets, Catholic priests, etc, etc.....

The funny thing is, false cartoons were distributed in order to fuel the fire. Who drew those? And why aren't they getting grilled for it?

Anyway, I'll continue to try understand this level of violence.

Re: More cartoon protests

there is an ARMY/NAVY type store by my house selling the bomb turban stickers for your car.

and some choice bumper stickers featuring mohammed related quotes, like mohammed is a terrorist, your prophet is gay, etc...

gave me a good laugh.

These cartoons had nothing to do with Islamic territories outside Europe, but were rather placed to provoke a discussion between Muslims and non-Muslims in Europe itself: and here it has at least in Denmark achieved it's goal, in other countries the discussion is still ongoing. They also have fuckall to do with the West invading their countries and what not, that is a totally different story to me and believe me: I am not happy about the West at all when it comes to that. But we do live by certain standards here, and these were given up out of fear: THAT is what they wanted to confront. And they were right: we should not restrain ourselves on our own ground for fear of 'foreigners', it is they that have to adapt themselves to us, not the other way around.

We live in a much smaller world then we did in the past and discussions/images such as these can be easily spilled out of Europe and into the many homes all over the globe via the net and without much explanation. Sure Denmark may have achieved it's goal but many in the world outside of Europe are still left scratching their heads wondering why.

Maybe so, but perception plays a big in this imo.

Does Denmark have troops in Iraq?

What is so offensive about them that embassies have been burnt down - even embassies of countries that have not published the image?

I look forward to you response.

And in case you havent seen all tweleve in their glory. . .

Why? Maybe because it was time for Europe to show what it is about.
Does Denmark have troops in Iraq?
Ehrrr...I seriously have no idea. Then again, those cartoons were aimed as a reaction to things that hadden happened inside Europe, in fact, inside Denmark itself. Not against Iraq, even though the drawings themselves drew upon events that have taken place outside Europe.

Re: More cartoon protests

why do the muslims blame the jews, it was the UN that created isreal, not the jews, it wasnt like they all flocked there with heavy weaponry, kicked out the followers of islam and put up shop. if anything their beef should be with europe and US

oh yeah, they cant because they would be wiped off the planet if hamas sent suicide bombers to churchill's neighborhood.

The very first banks were probably the religious temples of the ancient world. In them were stored gold in the form of easy to carry compressed plates. Their owners justly felt that temples were the safest places to store their gold as they were constantly attended, well built and were sacred, thus detering would-be thieves. There are extant records of loans from the 18th Century BC in Babylon that were made by temple priests to merchants.

Ancient Greece holds further evidence of banking. Greek temples as well as private and civic entities conducted financial transactions such as loans, deposits, currency exchange, and validation of coinage. Interestingly, there is evidence too of credit, whereby in return for a payment from a client, a Money Lender in one Greek port would write a credit note for the client who could "cash" the note in another city, saving the client the danger of carting coinage with him on his journey.

Ancient Rome perfected the administrative aspect of banking and saw greater regulation of financial institutions and financial practices. Charging interest on loans and paying interest on deposits became more highly developed and competitive. The ascent of Christianity in Rome and its influence restricted banking, as the charging of interest and usury were seen as immoral. Jewish entrepreneurs, free of Christian taboos about money, established themselves in the provision of financial services increasingly demanded by the expansion of European trade and commerce.
