Now is a great time (imo) to catch up on many of the older and lessor known movies, including foreign.

Here are a few movies I really enjoyed that I doubt most people have even heard of:

 • Love Liza (Philip Seymour Hoffman)

 • State and Main (Excellent writing, perfect for a Sunday afternoon)

 • Life is Beautiful (Very enjoyable film)

Re: Highly Recommended (and overlooked) Movies

Tzameti (13) - see it before the remake comes out. Slow to start, but once it gets to the house, the movie reveals a really twisted sense of simplicity.

I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK - Chanwook Park (director of Oldboy) made a kinda romantic comedy that crosses One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Brazil and shades of The Terminator.

The Long Good Friday - British gangster film that was wicked before Guy Ritchie got things hip again.

Stander - Thomas Jane portraying South Africa's most famous bank robber who happened to be a cop.

This should start you all off nicely.

Meet the Feebles One of Peter Jackson's early films, which is best described as an episode The Muppet Show written by a meth tweaking and very horny 14 year old. Hilariously bad taste and kind of astonishing that it came from the guy who made Lord of the Rings.

dunno if I'd classify this film as "overlooked" but if you haven't seen it, it's a good one.

Re: Highly Recommended (and overlooked) Movies

funny you bring up Sexy Beast. I was just watching a trailer for 44 Inch Chest a couple of days ago here:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/44inchchest/

And it mentioned the writers of this flick also wrote Sexy Beast, so it is on my to-watch list :)

It looks good from the trailer, also some great actors.

Time Bandits (1981)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081633/

This is an old Terry Gilliam flick. I don't know how many times I watched this on VHS when I was growing up. Very surreal and awesome movie in the Gilliam style. Also Sean Connery is in it a bit, and John Cleese as Robin Hood which is pretty funny. Also David Warner (who is always awesome) as the evil baddieCheck it out.

No shit. When I first saw this back in 1997 half the theatre left with his board and nail act.

Good call - it's a unbelievably good documentary, but not for the faint of heart.

This is a kick ass action flick. Starring Ray Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Vincent D'Onofrio, William Fitchner and Michael Wincott.

Hardly anyone has seen this but it is one of my favourites.
