Realistic is a hard word to define, but my favourite war movies include:

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Hamburger Hill (the Vietnam era of war movies were particularly good I thought, very much focused on the human side of things), The Thin Red Line, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Band Of Brothers, All Quiet On The Western Front, The Great Escape, Schindlers List, To End All Wars, and probably the greatest of them all, Catch-22.

deffinitely would have to say " A Bridge Too Far". Besides being a three hour long kick ass movie it contained a line up of actors unheard of even to this day . they go as follows: Robert redford, James Caan, Gene Hackman, Sir lawrence olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery . Also a few big name british actors that i can't name. hell it even had cliff claven off of cheers in it. who happen's to get shot in the face at one point.

Oh and I forgot to mention "GLORY". who can leave that out.

Saving Private Ryan is the best Steven Spielberg is the best director!! After I watchd it in DVD my goldfish's died...maybe Ohama beach action was a little loud :oops:

I just remembered The Pianist, already mentioned, but it is a fantastic movie, one of the best. Adrien Brody did exceptionally well to pull off his character, very heartfelt I thought.

braveheart and the gladiator are epic movies and not war ones (although they show nothin but war) because they speak of some heroes...

so Platoon and Saving private Ryan r most deffinately 2 of the best war movies...i also like the bridge of the river kwai... :roll:

Band of Brothers isnt a movie, but thats a damn good WWII recreation..worths mention it...

Many of the old war movies are fantastik, although they may seem a little dated by today's standards, for example....

The longest Day Battle of the Bulge Midway Patton Bridge over the River Qui (best picture for some year) and espeically, Das Boot. If you guys have never seen it, check it out, its all in german, but subtitled, about a german U boat.

Other more recent really good ones that I didn't see mentioned (I only read about the first 20 posts)

Glory Memphis Belle The Last Samuri Top Gun (when you were 8 years old, that movie was the shit) War Games (does simulated war count?)

How about Gone with the Wind or the Sound of Music? :roll:

i mean francis ford coppola and marlon brando do vietnam. . . thats the recipe for intensity and isnt that what war movies are all about.

i love war flicks.... and even thought it is a mini-series, i must say that 'band of brothers' is the best war film i have ever seen.....just amazing. granted, they had 10 hours to work with.....but it is outstanding.

"How Sleep The Brave" Its a Vietnam movie from 1981, it may have been called "Combat Zone" in the states and is very hard to get a hold of now. All the yanks die in it.

I have to say the little-seen-in-America "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War" is one of the best I've ever seen. It's a Korean movie about the Korean War, and is just as good OR BETTER than "Saving Private Ryan". Excellent production values, great acting, and a really moving story. And I don't even like moving stories. Netflix that shit.
