Saving Private Ryan is the most realistic WWII movie ever made. Schindler's List is also a very realistic movie.

Of course, star wars does not count. I just saw "black hawk down". come on this movie is nothing against platoon. What about "Lord of the rings?" its also a "war movie" ;-)

saving private ryan - with Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Jeremy Davies, Edward Burns.....very realistic play and awsome sound. This move is a milestone in term of war movies. My favorite part is the D-day action right at the beginning. WHOA. That was scary.... :shock:

If Band of Brothers counts as a movie, then that gets my vote. Being about 12 hours long, you get a real feel for some of the characters. Spears running through town past the germans in the Bastogne episode gives me chills everytime I see it. Man has BALLS!!!

'Thin Red Line' is good in many ways. The original edit was 8 hours long and they trimmed it down all the way to ~3 hours, so A LOT of the story was lost. Wish they would release the original edit...

I don't know if it's my favorite, or the "best", but I saw "We Were Soldiers" recently; I then bought the DVD. Affected me very deeply in its portrayal of both the American AND the NVA soldiers in the Vietnam War. If solely based on its combat sequences, I feel it should have done for Vietnam what Saving Private Ryan did for WWII.

I haven't seen too many war movies and probably never will but I loved watching Saving Private Ryan and own that one too.
