Re: Brokeback Mountain

I think people should be debating whether to put homosexuals in mental clinics. Same sex sexual orientation is a disease.

Now....people on this message board are obviously will come out with comments such as "oooh, a gay in denial and my favourite.....you are so last century"....in which they prove that its a fashion trend.

Before you lot call me a homophobic, go read some science journals, there's study after study in which they prove that homosexuality is unnatural and defies logic.

Still not convinced? let me give you some stats.....if you exclude african immigrants in the west then 85% of sexually transmitted diseases are from gays.

Good thing the movie flopped and already out of the charts.

Anyway, i posted my message, you can have a go now....

Re: Brokeback Mountain

Quality quality film. Clearly the homophopic aren't the target demographic, and if such things bother you that much, you've probably got a few kinks to work out anyways. Incredibly refreshing to see such an original screenplay these days. And to think I thought hollywood didn't have anymore writers these days considering all the bad re-remakes, sequels and comic-book films out last year.

Are you going to actually source some of the shit you're claiming or are you going to leave things at "some science journals" for your validity? You're not giving any stats, that's just being vague and trying to sound like you know what you're talking about, and your thinly vieled homophobia (reflected loud and clear in the statement "Good thing the movie flopped and already out of the charts") is as amusing as your denials that you are.

Btw, the film hasn't even gone into wide release. Rottentomatoes.com has it listed as getting a wide release January 13th, so your pre-emptive declaration of failure is a bit pre-mature.

Again, much like Munich, I ask you, have you actually seen the movie? You obviously didn't with Munich (and I call bullshit on that you did - the time that you wrote, the film wasn't even in theatres, and the film had limited press screenings - I seriously doubt you're a journalist of any kind), and I'm highly skeptical that you've actually seen this too.

I think the whole "Gay Cowboy" tag is hurting the film more than helping it. I saw it as being more complicated than two men that discover an attraction to each other on the range.

I think the thing I related to the most in this film is the classic theme of forbidden love and denial of what might feel right in the face of the social circles that might disapprove and with nowhere to go in order to feed that desire. It kind of reminded me of that documentary in the mid to late nineties about a Serbian and Croatian couple that fell in love with each other, while the war was going on around them.

But I also couldn't help but think about the South Park/Sundance episode joke either. ;)

el presidente, i can support the things i say from a number well known reliable sources, but i can't be bothered to go look for links on the web, the journals and newspapers i have are hard copies and papers from conferences. But for you, i will try to find some links in the next couple of days that have some reference to the material i have.

...about Munich, i haven't seen it, but a friend of mine who has seen it and i trust his judgement says that only the israeli characters are developed...and they only show the 'israeli' characters as having remorse whereas the palastinians are shown to be ruthless and they don't show the background as to what drove them to carry that madness act.

The fact that its 2006 and people still think homosexuality is a "disease" - now that defies logic.

You should check out the movie sono (with an open mind of course). You might find that the review miss catness put up was spot on - and if two actors can portray that kind of depth and emotion, just imagine what a "real-life" homosexual couple could do. Love is not a disease my friend - and the fact that you suggest a certain segment of the population should be committed because they think differently than you, that is pretty void of logic as well.

As for the film -- I enjoyed it. Kinda slow at parts but overall I'd recommend.

peloquin- the buttseks scene isn't that bad- very tastefully done, the most i heard from people during that scene in the theatres were tiny giggles if anything.

 can't believe I'm reading this, in 2006, on an EDM board. It just defies explanation. Ignorance, pure and simple.

I haven't seen it yet and am not sure if I will or not. Frankly, I rarely subject myself to romance movies generally, so to the extent that it is essentially a romance movie, it really isn't really my cup of tea, gay, straight or otherwise. On the other hand, I might see it out of a sense of duty from a cultural literacy standpoint. Who knows. I'll probably end up breaking down and checking it out.

There is one scene, and they get it out of the way in the first 15 minutes. The film is structured sort of like Bound (the movie the Wachowski Brothers did just before they did The Matrix). Get the part that people expect out of the way and then move on to telling the story. It's pretty tame stuff.

#545293Post 30 of 46

Re: Brokeback Mountain

Sorry, it may be a well told movie, but me and most Americans don't care to see movies about gay lovers. I don't have to spend my time and money on something I'm not interested in. It doesn't make us bad people for not wanting to see the movie. I don't care to see many movies out there because I'm just not interested.

I am concerned about the attention the movie gets. Would it have got as much attention if it was a story involving a heterosexual relationship? Probably not is my guess. There seems to be a gay agenda in Hollyood and you're a terrible person if you're not on board. And I don't want to see the story about the ugly Desperate Housewive as a trans-sexual and couldn't care to see Pride & Prejudice either.

However, that's more than likely because we've seen nearly over a century of heterosexual relationship themed movies, and only a handful of mainstream homosexual relationship films that don't give into the stereotypes that are usually associated with with gay leads.

As for the gay agenda comment - don't make me laugh - it's called exploitation. They'll move onto some other kind of relationship twist themed films after they've gotten their mileage out of this flavour of the month. And there will probably be a lot more based on the success that Brokeback Mountain has garnered. They were doing it with the Blacksploitation films in the 70's, the Asian horror films over the last few years, the wire fu films after The Matrix broke through, and the list goes on and on (remember the glut of Vietnam films in the mid 80's? The indestructible killer films like Nightmare on Elm Street/Halloween/Friday the 13th that happened in the late 70's and early 80's or how about the current bunch of splatter/gore horror films like Saw, Hostel and Murder Set Peices?). This is just another phase that a studio is getting on board for in order to make money. If they could figure out a way to get grannies being plowed up the ass and have it make $150 million at the box office, you can bet that they (the studios) would sure as hell be chasing down Bea Arthur, Judi Dench and just about any other over 50 woman to recruit to have for their own granny fucking film.

it is not a movie about gay lovers, it is a love story period, if it was about two lesbians would you feel the same way?

and do not generalize that "all americans" will feel the same way you do. i'm sure many americans are open-minded and are interested in things that aren't always the status quo. why does it not surprise me that you live in texas? cough redneck cough(doesn't feel so nice to be generalized, does it?)

Ok Cat, I didn't say "All Americans". I said most Americans and I can speak for them better than you since you're in Canada. And aren't you contradicting yourself saying its love story between two men?

And your typical negative remark about me being a redneck is how some liberals react. You can't make sense with your arguments(see paragraph above), so you resort to name calling.

#549870Post 36 of 46

Re: Brokeback Mountain

I think the part that scares a lot of people about Brokeback is that they fear that they might actually be able to relate to the characters. As I mentionned, Twist and Del Mar aren't limp wristed, squealing queens that we might see in a film like say The Birdcage, nor are they the flamboyant makeup wearing drag queens that most popular media resorts to when bringing across the matter that a character is gay. In Brokeback Mountain, it's pretty incidental that the two main characters are gay, but it's the point that the media and a lot of people can't get past. It's not much different than when blacks were getting leading roles in films and actors like Sidney Poitier got more press about being a black lead than about their acting ability at first.

Complex character studies like this, and Transamerica, which confronts situations that straight people take for granted and deal with on a regular basis in life make people uncomfortable because it might make them re-evaluate their own problems and situations in life or how they might be able to share a feeling or situation that they might have similarities with (ie. Twist and Del Mar having an affair behind their spouses backs - something straight people might have done, with a heterosexual spin on the situation).

I mean I can relate to some degree of the uncomfortableness of a film like this. I don't really like having gay porn pushed into my face, as it does nothing for me, and I really just don't care to see someone's cock on a screen, much like some women probably don't care to see a lot of female nudity on screen for the sheer reason of exploitation. But do I need to express endlessly about how much I hate seeing something like this, or how I'm turned off by something like this over and over again? That's a textbook case of overcompensation.

Read El Presidente's or my posts on how to properly argue a point or express an opinion. You should try thinking and understanding other people before name calling and stereotyping others.

Re: Brokeback Mountain

i'm done with this arguement, instead of a rebutal all you ever come up with is "stop resorting to name calling", you either don't want to announce where you stand on the issues that I have brought up or you don't actually know yourself well enough to be able to know.

bottom line is that this is a great movie and i didn't start this thread thinking that I would have to justify to anyone why it should have or shouldn't have been made.
