Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
I'm terribly disappointed with this movie.

I got to say the trailers sold it to me very well and I was expecting way more from it, only to find that this movie was poorly executed with no depth into its characters.

The plot is very similar to some past ones. I guess history does repeat itself in its own tragedy and its called the force awakens.
Didn't like it either, way overhyped. Was too cheesy and predictable. The main bad guy was some stupid emo teenager, not suited to being who he was related to. The main big evil looked like something out of a Harry Potter movie. You could see the big "ZOMG don't die, so sad" moment coming a mile away, about an hour before it happened, they basically spelled it out. The main actress with a British accent! Like WTF, they're in a galaxy far far away, they don't have British accents. And neither do the aliens that live on her planet. And WTF are Scottish guys doing in space too?

Loved the original trilogy from the 70's-80's, they were untouchable. Should have left well enough alone. That's disney trying to milk the shit out of things like they're doing with marvel studios, churning out avengers movies every other week.

So yeah, didn't like this. Wasn't awful, but not movie of the year by a mile, was so many better films released this year.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

wow. such negativity?? was a bad ass movie imo. sure the plots were similar but by god at least they got some people that can act in this one (unlike 1-3 which are un-watchable), almost all non stop action too. definitely exceeded expectations!!!

imax 3d was the shit btw, HIGHLY recommend seeing it that way.

I was very excited to see this, I even bought the tickets for Imax 3D like 2 months ago and I'm not even a fan... but I was terribly dissappointed... the acting and the story line is lame.

for me, there are so many weak points that I don't even know where to start...

As Ger said, it wasn't awful but an average movie of the year so far.

Sorry for all the negativity guys

For you three haters... What movie recently would you give major props to so I can understand what you find to be a "good" movie

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Straight outta Compton was the movie of the year for me.

And as far as summer popcorn movies, Jurassic world was the one that entertained me most when I thought it was going to be shit.

Someone on the net said about the old Star Wars and new Star Wars, the old ones had natural magic to them, people lining up around the block to see them. The new one is forced on us, we're told to like it and it comes off shitty. Even though the nostalgia in the movie is forced and can't mask the bad points and crappy plot lines that I was talking about.

Well, we can agree on Jurassic World then :) Loved that movie

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

I love the classic Star Wars movies from the 80's, had all the toys as a kid and grew up with the movies. They're classics.

The new one is just so bad, Disney just looking to flood the market now with a big franchise like they're doing with marvel and all those superhero movies. They don't give a shit, people are going to see them anyway, good or bad.

At at least you agree with Jurassic world, was an awesome movie.

I enjoyed it for the most part - it does feel a bit more like a reboot and Disney paying lip service to the fan base in order to secure their 4 billion dollar investment for the future and put any worries to rest.

Some interesting character motives - Finn being a bit of a coward and doing whatever he can to get out of the way of the First Order. Rey being a gender swapped version of Luke Skywalker for the most part, with a bit more of a class issue, where Luke might be seen as "middle class" by comparison. Adam Driver being an interesting archetype of Vader but with a fair bit of insecurity and daddy issues. And Poe who feels like a bit of the pilot side of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker or even Biggs - he's the character that I really hope they flesh out more in the next installments, as Oscar Isaac is a tremendously talented actor. Seems a bit of a waste that he's a bit of a MacGuffin carrying plot device that shows up to save the day. He had good chemistry with Finn - I hope they expand on that. Domhall Gleeson was fun as the weaselly Tarkin type who's in a bit of what seems to be a power struggle with Kylo Ren. All promising characters that hopefully get fleshed out and developed with the future installments. There's even a nice little nod to Yoda with the Maz character's inclusion.

And while the story feels very familiar to Episode IV, it still works and the mixing up of the character archetypes make it feel a lot more fresh than it should. I think a bit of credit goes to JJ Abrams bringing some really great visuals and some very memorable shots to the whole affair (the Millennium Falcon chase on Jakku, the Tie Fighter shot of them coming towards the camera, backlit by the sun). The aliens chasing Solo and the people who he swindled (including two cast members from The Raid!) around the ship seemed a bit unnecessary, but didn't detract from the movie overall.

Loved the last shot of the film - very powerful. They smartly left a lot of questions on what's next in the follow up film (will Finn recover, Rey taking on Jedi training, how will Luke figure back into the fight against the First Order) to bait us into wanting to see where this next trilogy goes. It was a fan pleasing, greatest hits type movie that played all the notes that would keep the base happy and help secure interest in the future films. I quite enjoyed it for the nostalgia aspect, even if overall I felt like I saw a lot of this before.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Was really drawn into the movie and nostalgia until I tried to keep up with what was happening and then ultimately meh. Just so weird that everything came together so serendipitously.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

^^But thats kinda how it all happened in episode 4 :)

R2 and c3po just happen to escape to the planet that just so happen to have luke skywalker on it, and it just so happened he bought the droids off scrappers, and he just happen to know an older guy named kanobie... lots of serendipitously

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Yeah I could live with the chain of events right up to Han Solo appearing out of nowhere to salvage the Falcon, that lost all credibility with me. And Kylo Ren was the hugest MEH. All the villains. Captain Phasma?! Just a prop. It's ludicrous the Resistance would think the First Order a threat!

Very ambivalent, enjoyed it but the adult in me is winning out after the movie :(

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

It felt like Star Wars was back.

Some forced humour for sure, and yes the convenience of Solo/Wookie showing up when they did. But you were all willing to accept they stopped the trash compactor 'just in time' the first go around, so.......

saw in imax 3d - the space ships fighting scenes were phenomenal.
