Anyone watching this?
Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, amazing script.
As close as it gets to a Breaking Bad replacement right now.

Re: True Detective [2014]
Watched first ep it last night. Great first show. Both actors were intense .McConaughey was stellar and I'm sure the weigh loss was in conjunction with Dallas Buyer Club - looks like a crack addict.
Hopefully they can carry the story line for 8 episodes
Re: True Detective [2014]
First ep was great and intense... ep 2 and 3, a bit slow...
But the last one is ... McConaughey is huge. I like the change from how to lose a guy in 10 days... to this type of character. What a change!
Re: True Detective [2014]
Krystyan check out ep 4!

In episode 2 one of Cohle's police colleagues referred to him as the 'machinist'! Love it.

I did! that's why I said this guy is huge...
the flashforwards give another flavour to the series...
Re: True Detective [2014]
Oh I meant to respond to the 'slow' comment ... good action done in a single take.
Re: True Detective [2014]
No spoilers please we a bit behind here
Re: True Detective [2014]
Shit man last weeks episode was the best of the series so far. That super long camera take near the end....fantastic. Great atmosphere to this show, and McConaughey is hitting it out of the park with his roles lately.
Re: True Detective [2014]
Pretty epic telly. Great cast, plot and flow.
Re: True Detective [2014]
I got hooked just when I was about to give up on this show,I was thinking all along that the first 3 episodes were a total snooze fest and to be honest I didn't like the direction where this was going somehow each episode left me a sensation that this show seemed predictable and very very slow... however I always thought the acting is brilliant, who would have thought that Matthew Mcconaughey could play a dark fucked up psycho very well.
Then bam the 4th episode came along and so did the rest of the episodes which i think they are fucking brilliant. I seriously can't believe this whole season is only going to be 8 episodes :(
Anyhow I might give the first 6 episodes another run just in time for the season finale.
Re: True Detective [2014]
True detective is over. Not really happy with the ending but i think it was a good show to watch nonetheless.
Re: True Detective [2014]
Finished it. I guess there the show was never really gonna climax but there was no big reveal so that was kinda ... I want to say disappointing but I wasn't disappointed. I wasn't sure what to expect from the final episode but I did enjoy it right up to the final scene. Some bits in the episode I actually LOLed.
I liked the scene of them working the case in the office and driving in the car just like the old days. The parallel, now two broken men too old for the swagger and to hold on to their differences, their repartee is well-worn and familiar.
But I was definitely disappointed with Cohle's last lines, which made me wonder all the deep philosophical musings he had in the season, how much of it were from The King In Yellow, and how much of the other lines were written by Nic Pizzolatto because those last lines were pretty pedestrian. I think that was my biggest disappointment, I expected more from Cohle.
It's not the destination but the journey, and this is one of those stories. I enjoyed the entire journey a lot. I think the murder might've been the initial trigger and hook but for me it's really Cohle and Marty who're fascinating. The philosophical shit that Cohle spouts, their antagonistic partnership and repartee in the car.
I saw some article complaining about the show's treatment of women but whatever. It did occur to me the show felt like some male fantasy: Two very flawed men who continually fail in their personal lives, at odds with each other, but seemingly adhering to an integrity and code that both silently understood, while hot women seem to always throw themselves at them (well mostly Marty). They move past their decade-long differences to come back together to win the day.
If I had been more aware of how this was gonna pan out or if this was on Netflix I would've preferred to marathon it in one go. The tension and anticipation of the weekly gap didn't really serve the story.
Re: True Detective [2014]
Good point. Yes the whole story its quite a journey but with major ups and downs. I kindda felt that the finale was rushed, I don't know if their intention was to dodge a bullet but It left me a sensation that the director could have easily extended the story for 2 more episodes.
Re: True Detective [2014]
I've just got into it this past weekend, watched first 3 ep at my cousins. MM is numbingly and un-smilingly intense. I now have something new to cram through on my Roku.

season 2, different scenario

Human trafficking? Prostitution?
Re: True Detective [2014]
yep, that.
Re: True Detective [2014]
Been hearing good things about this show... gotta start watching it. However I hope I like the ending....
Re: True Detective [2014]
The ending was rather anti-climactic.
I really thought it would have been a high-profile figure rather than the overweight inbred lawn-mower they picked.
Great acting on part of MM though, absolutely loved him in this series.

Season 2 trailer, looks just as good as the 1st

Looking forward to Season 2 - hope the finale is better than Season 1
Re: True Detective [2014]
good start, looks promising. although I saw it was a bit all over the place... Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn were great
Re: True Detective [2014]
I really liked how season 2 started, 3 different stories that could go places. I didn't like the opening song tho'
Re: True Detective [2014]
The second season's expectations need to be tempered a bit - we're going from watching two multiple Oscar nominees at quite possibly the peak of their game to some younger actors who have a lot of potential, but have also had some pretty questionable project selections (ie. Kitsch with Battleship, McAdams with Time Traveler's Wife, Vaughn with the remake of Psycho and Ferrell with the Total Recall remake as an example for each). So far, the cast seems to be doing an adequate job for what little we have to go on - the characters are pretty sketchy so far, we haven't been given a lot of depth as to who they are as people and why they're doing what they are, other than Farrell's character with the flashback to him meeting Vaughn.
That being said, there's also a big element missing that drove the first season, the hint of occult activity with the first season's references back to H.P. Lovecraft's work (a master horror writer that went insane before he died), as well as other sources and a bit of quantum physics for good measure. That occult angle set the tone nicely and drove the suspense beautifully, giving it a much more mysterious air to the story and a boost to the southern Gothic backdrop of New Orleans.
This is an entirely different beast - and the first season really needs to be put aside - but that's a pretty tall order to ask from an audience that was dazzled and captivated by how amazing a job they did in the first season. So far we're seeing a very grizzled cop show, and there's a lot of them out there. It needs something more to stand head and shoulders above the others, and I'm hoping they find it.

You nailed it with the first paragraph... MM and Woody !!!
I'm hoping Colin can deliver... it's in the end a drunk and f**** up character anyway... so it kind of suits him. We'll see what Vince is trying to do with his role, 2 episodes in and I still don't quite read him...
2nd ep was

Re: True Detective [2014]
Yeah man, how can you hate on Leonard Cohen?
Ah well, to each their own.
Re: True Detective [2014]
I just saw episode 2 and had a wtf moment … lovely to see True detective went GoT on us, is this the trend now? Still it was a good episode though.
Re: True Detective [2014]
The show is becoming similar to what happened with Heroes - fantastic first season, but the follow up is getting a bit convoluted and isn't delivering on the case (it's a lot of character drama that is overshadowing the investigation).
Re: True Detective [2014]
I enjoyed ep 3 - very slow tho. Colin Farrell (not my favourite actor) is doing a fine job at the moment
Re: True Detective [2014]
Yes episode 3 was slow but boy did it have a lot of material to think about. I love how its building up so far! That colin ferrel character is pretty fucked up hahaha

Re: True Detective [2014]
Hells bells, how was the last 10 minutes of episode 4 last night - haven't seen a running fight like that since heat. That was insane.

It was a good scene, i can't help thinking that the last 10 mins of episode 4 on season 1 was pretty damn similar.
I'm a bit worried that the complexity of the characters has taken away a lot of attention from the central story. At this point I just want to know more about Velcoros's vices and bezzerides slutiness than what the hell happened to Ben Caspere.:lol:
Re: True Detective [2014]
Last 2 episodes have been total shit… What a way to ruin a season, everything just seems too predictable and too easy. Also the dialogues seem kindda whack, its really hard to keep up with all those characters names mentioned when they are all not even relevant in the story to begin with.
Someone needs to make sure that Fukunaga directs season 3 if there happens to be a season 3.
