Sasha & Digweed @ Simon's Independence Night 1996-07-04

This has got to be one of the most confusing sets ever. I don't think anyone really knows if they are all from the some gig, or they are loads of different sets bodged together. They have been released in different guises with different labels. Most of them being Simon's Independence Night, live at Twilo and Simon's Gainesville, Florida 26.5.96.From what Mark Hunt said some of the tapes from Simon's on Independence Night were stolen from the venue and its likely they are the ones that were put on to 2 cassettes and labeled live at Twilo and sold in a double cassette pack with the picture of the New York skyline on the cover. The others were sold as 2 double Cd's. One of which again was labeled live at Twilo with a picture of the New York skyline in blue on the cover and another without a picture. However the digweed discs are the same only one of them starts earlier than the other one and finishes earlier. A friend of mine sent me the cassette parts that someone has tried to put into some sort of order to try and make it less confusing. Which i have posted at the bottom of the page. I will try and post the CD versions sometime on the weekend. Its just a shame someone stole the tapes this could of been alot better

The US cd mixes are from Independence Night @ Firestone. I'm certain of this because I bought the 2 cd set from Underground Records in Orlando and still have them.

Did Firestone host more than 1 Independance? I have a flyer of that show and it's dated July 1st (with no year) and it says that Sasha spun for a 5 hour set, along with residents Robby Clark and Kimball Collins, there was no mention of Digweed either. I was there and don't remember Digweed being there but I could be wrong, I was pretty mangled that night =)

The Digweed US disc is definitely from Simon's. When Mark Hunt was talking about these. He stated that the bloke that comes on the mic on the Digweed disc was an employee or a friend of his at Simon's. That was how he knew it was recorded there. Remember some of this set was stolen

Mark Hunt used to hang out with Jimmy & Sean, but I don't think he recorded it. It was recorded from the soundboard at Firestone, then mysteriously appeared and distributed at Underground Records for like 30 bucks. I still have the jewel case with price sticker on it.

I would say Robby Clark is the one behind it all. He was resident dj at Firestone for like 6 years and he was also the owner of Underground Records.

This debate of this set will never end....

This set definitely was recorded at Simons but it wasnt on July 4th. It was the gemini party May 26, 1996. The Gemini party was an anual event there. The guy on the mic if I remember correctly is Joe C. one of the resident Djs at Simons.

I lived in Gainesville from 1996 to 2001 and frequented Simons club very often and I remember this night, at least part of it. At the time I had no idea who these guys were but they blew the roof off and Ive was hooked ever since. I have no proof other than the memory in my head; thats all that matters to me.

Read this thread. Youll see comments from Joe C and Boyd Westerman. There is even a Flyer on there for the night on the second page of the thread. Also, right above the pic youll even seea post where where they ask who announces JD and Joe C answers some retard.

It was defiantly Joe C. on the mic. He was the one who did the intros at Simons. I was at Simons club every weekend in the mid 90's so I am sure that that voice is Joe C. Anyone ever ask Simon? I have tried to get Uncle B. to dig up the sets from Simon. Simon supposedly has every night recorded on DAT.

As far as Independence night. Wore that tape out five times I'm sure. Special Kind of Lover......fucking blew me away. I was lucky enough to get the two record release of that. John Wells gave me his copy...( thanks John )

I heard back in the day that it was recorded at Simons and people thought it was a Firestone set. Anyone ask the man responsible for the mix? Like Sasha. And also heard back then that he played at both clubs (Simons/Firestone) that night/day/night and maybe that next day. I am sure Bevin or Simon has to know.

Zen was held at the Fairgrounds in Deland. That was the same night the asshole dropped the pepper spray in the pavillion.

Some of the best nights of my life! Diggums and sasha were like gods to raver folk back then.

I have to say that hearing those guys play at simons club in gainsville was quite a treat. Those were some of the most memorable nights ever. The vibe was so strong in that place and the way they brought it together just blew our minds. Straight up devine type shit going on. Like the first time we heard the Distant Voices EP...sasha droped it at like 8:00 am. Then killed it for hours. Really cool cats too. I never got any other vibes except respect and love for the music from those guys. All ways real into the vibe at simons.

Funky is right, Zen was a yearly Music Festival held at different fair grounds. In Deland, Fl and Zypherhills, Fl to name a few. I may have some old fliers lying around too, Ill post them as well if I can find them.
