Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I think the people who jumped on RM's case (including me) are sick of the blame game. It's obvious how to keep MS from being old:

Doing what Pickle has been doing for months, revamping it. Doing what lots of members have been doing for months, adding to the DJ Database. Continuing to improve the site is something that at least in my mind has been a constant. Other than that, CONTRIBUTION

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I think the part of that reason why you saw some of the members jump on RM's case about this thread is because it is a recurring theme with him: Focusing on problems without any real solutions.

This is a forum where the individuals make it what it is. If you don't contribute to the promo section, the dj database and ALL of the other sections, then guess what? You don't get to complain about what MS is and what MS isn't because you don't have a grasp on reality obviously.

This thread is kind of a smack in the face to the moderators, the regular contributors who post in all the sections and give of their time toward the actual purpose of the site, which is by the way THE OPPOSITE of POLITICS. Politics is alienating by nature, music brings people together. It's also a smack in the face to Pickle and the members who have made the DJ database what it is. I see MS as a constant work in progress and to suggest that it is getting old is counterproductive. If you have a real concern or BETTER YET an IDEA as to how to implement some kind of changes, why don't you send the mods your ideas, or make a donation.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I am pleasantly surprised that RM cares so much! And I agree that having a post limit before downloading might bring new people here on a regular basis. I think it's worth a try for a little while anyways to see what happens. If it changes nothing then put it back! I probably wouldn't have started posting in on this message board had I not been forced to 'cause I was rather shy and not savy to message board ways. It was all very new to me. But I did it and kept on going past the required 50 and still love this place, it feels like home.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I like the name Encryption better Kamal. Why the change?

I agree Chanty you will get quality rather than quantity members with mandatory posts. That is why I fear this place will just become a downloading whore. 50 posts give you a chance to meet someone even if they are sometimes spam. You will get some new people with new ideas and opinions.

 Did you 2 not read TomTom's response or do you not think he know's what he's talking about?
Returning to your suggestion, yes we could need more proactive members but posting limits are not the answer. If they would be, we would have a hell of a lot more proactive users by now thanks to our post count restrictions in the past. But we don't. "Thanks the many links" a hundred times per day was the result from post count limits like Jenks has already mentioned..

I would for example love to see more contributions like the articles that Simon is writing for Mercuryserver. We have a full blogging/article system on Mercuryserver since the last Upgrade and a front page that screams for more and Mercuryserver exclusive articles related to EDM or whatever. Self made content creates more reactions (comments) so it is all up to the people on Mercuryserver. We can provide the platform and make offerings but we need members who are willing to spend the time to create interesting content. Forcing them into something doesn't help here..everything must come at free will and from the heart.
Yes I did read it and of course he knows what he's talking about. I just remember that when people had to post there was more participation from newbies. People have always come and gone from this place but at least they were posting something.

Was their participation of any substance or was it mostly banal? Content > numbers. IMO.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Both really. I'm sure that a good majority of the reg peeps on here (and that used to be reg posters) started out with the 50, liked it here and stayed around. And I didn't mind the "how many posts must I have" questions 'cause they always gave us a good chuckle!

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Ok, so I'm new. I've been reading this thread over the last couple of days and I'm pretty sure I can offer some insight. If you like. IMO, if you want to know why there isn't much posting by new people on this forum, look at this thread. How much of this thread is dedicated to the past. Most of it. How much of all threads deal with relationships from the past? A whole bunch of them. I don't know any of you really. I know pickle and that's about it. I don't know anything about what has gone on in years past so it's hard to reply to several of the threads. A lot of you have already formed friendships. Several of you have met up and hung out on many occasions. I personally think this is sweet. I totally would love to be part of that. I guess what I'm saying is that sometimes it's hard to chime in on certain things because I don't share this bond with any of you. Nor do any other new members. I'm not complaining about this at all. I realize that if I would put myself out there and comment the shit out this forum that you guys would then know who the hell I am. But, until I'm willing to get my head out of the sand, I just sit back and watch. It's entertaining. How about instead of demanding posting, why don't you ask the "new" people why they don't post? You know what I mean? Try "reaching out" so to speak. BTW, that sounds so ridiculous written now then it did in my head. You get the point. This is just my opinion and apparently that is kinda what you guys are wanting soo.... there ya have it.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

i know what you mean..I've been around here with a friend's user for a year and a half or so and after reading several times different threads, finally i've decided to become an active member

IMO, it's a matter of time and quality content.. Why would you want to force someone to post something?

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I've been on here for a couple years now and I know I don't post too often, but I do agree with GranolaGirl when she says that a lot of the threads seem to talk about how MS used to be and this can be difficult for new members if they haven't been around too long. I don't think the creation of another post count to stimulate conversation is the answer, but I do know that "remember when" is usually the lowest form of conversation.

#1485153Post 59 of 241

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I for one can tell you that i'm not the active member that I used to be partly because I don't go out anymore. It's nice to come on here and read up on the djs that I like. What sets they have coming out or where they are playing next. I think the dj database has been extremely useful for me. Having discovered new djs that I wouldn't have on my own. So Thanks Pickle for that. As far as the post count goes that was a thing of the past.

lol in my case, registration as a member has had nothing to do with stimulate anything.. i've decided to post by myself and not only picking up music with my friend's user name

after a couple of years, i'm still posting in this forum almost every day

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old
You know what's getting old and tiring? All these bickering across the forums. RM isn't being offensive and even if it's a misguided attempt at rejuvenating the board, there's no need for the attitudes. Same in the Japan Earthquake thread. And in a separate thread about Sasha in GYY, more bickering. And in the Sasha sub-forum, more bickering. And in the P&R forum, Bloodstream constantly giving shit to people who happen to repost a set he's already posted. I don't even step into Politics but I'm sure it's a shitstorm in there. The only 'safe' forum is Computers!

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Everyone just chill and step back and listen to some fucking music and remember why we come here.

Cos the way this board is going through some convulsive comedown meltdown or midlife crisis, the newbies won't stay even if they come! We're turning into GU!

On a side note, ever since we stopped hosting the Kiss sets as downloads, and the weekly Transition threads are in the sub-forum, there's been a huge drop in discussion over the sets. Also a huge drop in discussing music and sets in general (in P&R or in GYY).

Actually the recent discussion on Tommy Four Seven was great, felt like the old ms again—less negativity, all music.
What was offensive about RM is his refusal to allow anyone to disagree with him. and to personally insult people when he does it . Unfortunately reactions are always going to be bad to him if you have had previous dealings with him. Even if he came up with a great idea it would be hard to forget what has gone before.

Btw you are so right about politics.

#1485212Post 63 of 241

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Hmmm well most of the time I take each post on its own and don't bother with the 'history' of the user, and the ones who make offensive posts I put on ignore :)

But I really do think there's a lot of bickering these days.

#1485233Post 64 of 241

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Well it's difficult separating posts when they are on the same subject and in the same thread  I never put people on ignore, that just seems so rude  It's probably a generational thing

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I agree that making people post again to access music, just won't work anymore....its a different time on the internet (you can get free music, tv, movies, etc. anywhere)....unfortunately it just wouldn't work. I am honestly not sure what would work, but I think as long as people like Adam continue to make positive changes and contributions to making this place more modern and informative, it will survive and be as strong as ever, but in a different way.

With regards to not seeing the old people that use to post on here & the decrease in activity from the ones that are still here, it is simply due to the fact that, we are older and other things in life have become a priority (family, work, etc.)....and when we do have time to come on here and interact with our online family/community we don't for one simple reason....we are tired of seeing the negativity and fighting. There are a few people on here, that deter others from posting because we know whatever we say, will be ridiculed and never dropped.....take the example of Steve Graham....he made a simple observational/personal comment (you all know what I am referring too), and people just won't let it go....stuff like this is tiresome. Back in the day you could give your comment about a dj, cause a debate/argument for a few pages, shrug it off and move on....if you want it to go back to that way, certain people need to get over themselves and move on.

No Steve made a completely stupid comment that I responded to. However Steve then choose to become offensive and then run off when I challenged him on it further. Steve made this comment based on egotistical nonsense, made by someone living in La La Land, a place where hero worship had made someone lose control of normal thought. This wasn’t the first time Steve had responded in this way and yes it would have been over in a few pages but Steve choose to run off and have his bell end mates respond for him. So yes I will pursue him on it. So save me the right on hippie lovin bullshit and if we all know who we are on about call me by name.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

God this thread has made a turn for the surreal. Everything wrong with this site is on display in this thread.

Bickering Old Arguments Blaming others

I love this site so I don't want o come across as negative but first we all need a group hug. We have to for the survival of the site. Old feelings towards each other have to go out the window.

I mean we all know DQ is a cry baby and Didi is a whiner and I'm a dickhead... but we need to get over it and move on. Bringing up old arguments isn't the answer I know that much. The problem seems to be with the old guard I guess. Pre 2006 people. Well we better figure it out soon because I fear MS might pay for it in the future.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I think there's been some very good points made in all of this. Thanks RM ;)

[ms] is so well established that it's like a political party with factions that have different views which is cool. There's a lot of passion, love and pride here.

Part of the lack of posting may be that people are busier. There's less time to sit there posting away in work etc. I can't get access in work and am working longer hours so there's less time to post and come on and check stuff ... plus I do go on fb and a couple of other sites, although [ms] :LoveYou: will always be my first love.

I'll also get my arse into gear more with the blogs  ... there's a lot of half prepared things that need finishing. I'll resume my weekly Transitions threads in GYY to hopefully get some of the P&R people over here.

The site has been difficult to navigate for people following the last changes ... mainly because no-one takes the time - so hopefully more will get orientated. The DJ database is awesome and this is still a unique and very very special place.

If you love quality electronic music this is the only real place to come and share your passion ... if you stay you'll make some life long friends.

#1485298Post 75 of 241

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Ok I got it.. How about a new members thread above GYY and Politics. Just to get them talking. And when they first register there could be a note saying go meet some like minded music lovers in the New Members Section

What do you think? Then when they get the balls they can come into GYY? Or just post a sticky thread at the top of GYY called new members. Where only new members can talk? Have a link when they register to send them right to the thread.
