Bring back the mandatory posts to download the promo section. Let's face it none of us back in the day would be talking to each other if we weren't forced to back in '04. I have noticed over the past year that post traffic in GYY and other threads has becoming a talking post for about 50 people. Considering we have thousands of members it doesn't seem right that we can't even get pics from WMC even anymore. Back in the day we would have had pics on day 1, 2, 3, 4, thousands of them. Reports of who was dropping what sick track and so on.

Let's face it many of us are getting old. Shit I'm 30. I was 23 when I joined and was forced to start talking to people.

I say make them talk. 100 posts to download anything in the promos and recs section. Then this place will be booming again with new members and new dialog.

Otherwise this place will just be a download section and that is it. We will be saying what a great board it was with great people, and now it is a music distribution whore.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

That is a horrible idea. True to form Runningman.

What will happen is we'll get less people joining, and the ones that do just for sets will post more nonsense than you do just to pad their post count. "how many posts must be have, i can download?"

Freedom is best.

The lack of message board participation is a trend compounded by the rise of facebook and other sites, this trend is not exclusive to mercuryserver. It's happening everywhere. Forcing people to participate will only alienate further.

Just like your cell mate in prison used to tell you RM, just let it happen, it'll be alright.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

Ok well let's see who right then. Usually it's me but hey maybe it is a full moon tonight and maybe you will be right once. I love it when people who are always wrong agree with another guy that is always wrong.

If you build it it will come.. Well it is built and it is getting old. We need some new meat on here.

What do you propose then because the status quo isn't working. WMC was a warning shot to MS. Do you suggest we not be known as a music board where people can talk about music because that isn't happening anymore. People aren't talking/sharing at all because the board is full of old people who don't go to WMC and raves anymore. I go twice a year now if I'm lucky. But I still like to keep in touch with what DJ's are doing and so on.

What do you propose to attract new young people to this board? The board flourished when you had to post.. Now ehhhh... :(

The carrot and stick motivation has worked since the beginning of time. We have the music.. They want it.. Do you see it?

1 + 1 = 2

Just giving stuff away for free is not always the best decision. In Haiti Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations thought that if he gave a away free food it would help the situation. Turns out he was wrong.

Go to 9 mins and watch

Now that is how you rest a case.. With an example.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

You act like these sets are exclusive to mercurysever or something. This isn't the beginning of the internet, you can find this stuff everywhere. Forcing people to post 100 times before they have access to sets they can get other places with no effort, is an example of good idea only in pea sized brains like yours. It's painful to have to constantly own you on the internet like this. New creative ideas, like the dj and label database pickle has been working on tirelessly and doing a great job is a good start. Forcing people to do anything is always an awful idea. Come up with something useful and exciting and fresh and people will gravitate towards it. What do you have that fits that model? We'll be waiting.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

you see this is exactly what has gone wrong on this site.. A bunch of old friends ganging up on someone with an idea.

All I'm trying to do is come up with a marketing plan so MS will have many great years ahead. And all I get is negative attacks and a bunch of "yes men"

No wonder new people don't want to talk on here. Because they fear the MS Mafia that has become the cancer of the site. You aren't right until the Mafia says your right.

I gave my suggestion and you didn't Jenks. They could have gotten the sets from somewhere else back in the day but they came here because of the variety and organization of the sets, I mean look at how many sets we have loaded everyday on this site. You mean to tell me that people won't want to talk on here to get access to that? Tracklistings, Sets, Interviews.. It's all here and it[s organized. Use your brain because we have fallen a sleep at the wheel here for a bit and I fear the site may pay drastically for it.

lol @ WE all the ones who are a cancer to the site. That's rich, guy.

I think the site is fine. It ebbs and flows, it is what it is. I gave you the reason above why MS isn't as jumping like it was in 2002, but as usual you can't comprehend that, instead it's "whoa is me, you guys are after me." Man, you're so predictable.

You're right about one thing tho, you gave your suggestion and I didn't. I don't have a good suggestion to increase traffic and participation, the difference is, I don't have a shitty suggestion either. ;)

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

How can you say the site is fine? The biggest music event in the world just happened and nobody reported on it. 3 pages in the WMC thread. People in China think their country is fine but doesn't mean it can't be better Jenks.

Didi just because you have disagreed with someone before doesn't mean you arent part of the problem. I can tell you from people who have spoken to me in private don't like the direction of the cliques on here. There is a gang and you are either in it or out of it. And that scares a lot of people.

Are you serious? Look at the DJ Database instead of only bashing people about politics and you'd see that many of us, myself included, have put in hundreds of hours to make this place something more. If you want to help, help me generate new ideas for the DJ Database or submit new artists :)

We get ~40 registrations per day. This would have been unheard of two-three years ago

I understand where you are coming from but this is very unlikely to happen in my opinion. So far this Year, we had the highest registration numbers ever but the amount of registrations hasn't much to do with the amount of participation (sadly). I know that over 90% of the people come here to get their free music in p + r and besides saying Thanks from time to time or to ask for more mixes or track names, they are not interested in much more. And I don't blame them for it. Everything has become so much quicker thanks to Highspeed Broadband flat rates, Facebook, Twitter and Blogs etc. Quick comments, mood updates and social Games are the actual trend and forum usage has decreased a lot. It's a general social development and also noticable on [ms]. I think with the vast amount of information you can get on the Internet these days, the individuals are just less proactive because they already have a hard time to consume the boat load of new information and content that is waiting for them each day on the Web.

Returning to your suggestion, yes we could need more proactive members but posting limits are not the answer. If they would be, we would have a hell of a lot more proactive users by now thanks to our post count restrictions in the past. But we don't. "Thanks the many links" a hundred times per day was the result from post count limits like Jenks has already mentioned.

The WMC abscence on [ms] in 2011 you mentioned is also a good example. In the last Years, I always got PM's or saw threads from people asking to make a subforum for it and saw numerous threads about it in advance and even more during the conference. This year (and also last year partially), interest was quite low - both from people who planned to make a photo documentation and members who asked for information.

I would for example love to see more contributions like the articles that Simon is writing for Mercuryserver. We have a full blogging/article system on Mercuryserver since the last Upgrade and a front page that screams for more and Mercuryserver exclusive articles related to EDM or whatever. Self made content creates more reactions (comments) so it is all up to the people on Mercuryserver. We can provide the platform and make offerings but we need members who are willing to spend the time to create interesting content. Forcing them into something doesn't help here..everything must come at free will and from the heart.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

You know what's getting old and tiring? All these bickering across the forums. RM isn't being offensive and even if it's a misguided attempt at rejuvenating the board, there's no need for the attitudes. Same in the Japan Earthquake thread. And in a separate thread about Sasha in GYY, more bickering. And in the Sasha sub-forum, more bickering. And in the P&R forum, Bloodstream constantly giving shit to people who happen to repost a set he's already posted. I don't even step into Politics but I'm sure it's a shitstorm in there. The only 'safe' forum is Computers!

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Everyone just chill and step back and listen to some fucking music and remember why we come here.

Cos the way this board is going through some convulsive comedown meltdown or midlife crisis, the newbies won't stay even if they come! We're turning into GU!

On a side note, ever since we stopped hosting the Kiss sets as downloads, and the weekly Transition threads are in the sub-forum, there's been a huge drop in discussion over the sets. Also a huge drop in discussing music and sets in general (in P&R or in GYY).

Actually the recent discussion on Tommy Four Seven was great, felt like the old ms again—less negativity, all music.

Agree. RM has a point i think, for sure. His solution may or may not be the best one but, as per, people are quick to shoot him down rather than suggest something else themselves or admit his point is valid.

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I have found this to be a very informative thread. Being in SA it is hard for me to get into major discussions on what music is out there, who made it, producers, mixing machines - cd vs vinyl vs laptop and the latest release from the dj's most of us like. Hernan's renaissance master series arrived 3 months after the UK/ USA releases and I think the thread was on page 6 before i could give my opinion (example). Another reason is, I got into EDM rather late in life (37) so sort of missed out on the radical years of party, music, clubs and drugs. Had I discovered EDM I may have known a bit more to be able to contribute to certain threads in the forum. Bottom line: I love music, I love this forum for introducing me to a wide range of talent and even tho I don't post lots of "intellectual" posts I read most of the threads to soak up other peoples knowledge and talent they present in the forums. Most of my 3000 post are made up of the megathread nonsense posts but still I feel like its the only forum on the world wide web that I feel like I belong. MS Rocks!!

but low paticipation in yakity yak is easily offset by the wonderful work pickle has done to easily manage the music and djs u like with the sets and topics that surface. i still do believe there is alot of disucssions epecially in the promos discussing and anylizing sets............... still suprised no one started a vagabond thread review, wth happen to sakio

i miss steve (jibs).... he always kept this forum entertaining. on a related note, we've had a ton of members who were on here for a loooooong time that aren't as active or MIA now. seems like most of the new folks go straight to the promo section and if that's the only thing they're interested in, then that's fine. i don't want to force them to talk to me.... no disrespect to those new folks that do associate in GYY, i just miss the familiar names from the old days who made the GYY much more interactive.

chuck, great point about pickle's work too. thanks to him, it isn't as necessary to post music-related stuff in GYY. agree 100%!

#1484980Post 36 of 241

Re: The Way to Fix MS from Becoming Old

I understand what you are saying TomTom but I had to post to get in. Many of us had to post to get in back in the day. We will attract people that want to be here. I would rather have 5 registrations per day as long as all 5 posted comments and thoughts. That is the key to the successful board not just people who sign up and rape the promos section.

Facebook and twitter can't compare to MS because MS is global strangers talking to each other. Twitter and Facebook is basically for people who are already friends talking. You can't meet new people on FB or twitter. And if you do it probably is a bad idea(Stalker..).

I still think we should go back to the old post rule

I never thought I would say this but MS needs some glow stick waving, Tiesto loving, young meat.

I agree with you feather. We do need to be more accepting of others thoughts (and I include myself in that statement) rather than so quick to the draw.
