A few of my opinions regarding sushi:

Cooked fish always(read: always) tastes better than raw fish. Raw fish is flavorless. It's just slimy and gross.

A slimy, flavorless piece of fish slapped hastily onto a bundle of white rice isn't my idea of 'appetizing'.

Eel? I've had it, and it was BY FAR the worst sushi I've eaten. I don't even think it's raw, it had some sort of sweet coating on one side, and even though it didn't taste too bad, it was all stringy and disgusting. I probably wouldn't eat it again.

Whenever I went to eat sushi, I'd get a bowl of Miso(tasty), and then I'd just make a thick wasabi/soy sauce paste to drown out that fucking awful taste.

Onto sushi rolls. I don't mind them, as it seems like the meat is at least cooked in them. California rolls are good, but only if they have lots of that delicious mayo-like substance in them. The best roll I've had is a Ninja Roll. It had some sort of sweet crispy rice inside, damn it was good.

Raw fish is nasty. Cooked fish is good. End of story.

EDIT**

Japanese food isn't too tasty overall. I'd much prefer Chinese food, or Vietnamese food(Pho in particular). Korean food is awful al well, kimchee is like cold, crispy feces.

Re: Sushi.....

There's a place that opened up near me that has hibachi and a sushi bar. Throughout the week they have 1/2 price sushi for lunch, which is cool especially since their sushi is already so cheap :)

#340384Post 44 of 72

i loooooove japanese food, best food on earth, of course after mexican food :Naughty:

Re: Sushi.....

had the best piece of fish i've ever had last night. yellowtail belly. it was like butter. literally melted in my mouth.
spicy california rolls, I'll second that eel avocado but my peresonal favorite are spicy shrimp tempura rolls

and sake, well that goes without saying, prefer it hot, but cold will do if the sake isn't a cheap one.
spicy cali rolls, eel avocado and spicy shrimp? you guys get some ineteresting sushi over there  must try it one day.

my personal fave is blue fin tuna. just with good old soy sauce and wasabi. the best tuna for sushi is called "toro". if youdon't mind slightly more subtke flavours then it's f*n sushi heaven my friends :Bingo:

will try and search out a spicy shrimp roll tho.

oh and i definitely prefer my sake hot!
I've always seen eel on sushi bars and menus, but never tried it yet. seems a lot of people like it, might have to give it a go
definitely man. i was put off by the sound of eel but haven't looked back once i tried it. it's called "unagi".

and as dajshin said above, give takoyaki (octopus balls) a go if you can find it. it's served with shaved bonito (fish) flakes and make sure you get extra sauce and mayo!

yum!!

#340433Post 48 of 72

unagi rolls are awesome. my local sushi joint has something called a "godzilla roll", which is unagi + avacado that's fried tempura style. SO GOOD.

Re: Sushi.....

I'm a much bigger fan of sashimi. Skip the rice, just give me the nice thick slices of fish. My favorite is the raw salmon dabbed with some wasabi & soy sauce.

Have you had sushi in Vancouver? There is a Japanese restaurant pretty much at every other corner.

i dig sushi

call me crazy but it seems like the biggest difference in sushi shops is how they make the rice

#346792Post 55 of 72
i dig sushi

there's actually a very big difference between sushi places. quality of fish is the biggest difference. the real money places (like nobu in nyc, nozawa in la, and morimoto in phily) have chefs that change the texture of the fish and also match it with different things and sauces. that's also why you pay a grip when you go to elite places.

#346802Post 56 of 72

aha, well either my palate is not very discerning (very possible) or i have never been to one of the nicer spots (also very possible)

the most expensive ones i've been to are about $50 per person at the end. maybe i just like the rice flavor more than raw fish as i find myself eating more and more california rolls the more i eat sushi lol

i also dig some of the new trendy sushi rolls that have tempura in them like the 'carburator' and 'dragon roll' etc

i guess i might be eating sushi mostly for the non raw fish parts lmao (sadly that probably indicates i am not a true sushi lover)

:D

Re: Sushi.....

nigiri unagi is my shit...eel prepared nigiri-style. I kinda like to skip the sake with that and drink some la fin du monde or maudite...but, occasionally sake is the medicine.

#347331Post 59 of 72

wow that picture makes me hungry :D

#347336Post 60 of 72

I always get a dragon roll when i eat sushi. For some that is either eel, cucumber and avacado roll or its a califronia roll with eel and avacado rolled on the outside with roe on the top(fish eggs) it is incredible. Sake is always better hot.

Re: Sushi.....

If I could afford it, I could eat sushi damn near everyday...I worked in a sushi bar for about 2 years....I have family in Japan and have been there twice...but the best sushi I've ever had was in S. Lake Tahoe at a place called Samurai...the freshest seafood, hottest green tea, high end sake...yummy...here's a list of some of the things I like...

Scallop hand roll, spider roll, unagi, spicy tuna roll (maki style), yellowtail, California roll (not premade, has to made to order), amaebi (sweet shrimp, they take the heads and deep fry them, but the body of the shrimp is raw)...try some traditional japanese appetizers...gyoza, tempura, beef shimozukuri, yakitori....damn, I sound like a commercial...

Re: Sushi.....

my first experience with sushi wasn't that great! back in high school, a girlfriend of mine got me to eat a roll with the large roe on the outside. eggs popping all in my mouth! went to cooked rolls for a while then got into the real thing again! can't go wrong with a california or salmon roll!

#348675Post 67 of 72

I am thinking of getting some sushi this weekend. Not to familiar with the rolls with cream cheese. It doesn't sound that tasty to me, but I have heard lots of good things.

Re: Sushi.....

I like sushi, my people here in SC aren't much fans. I stay away from the weird stuff like eel or octopus (I don't even know if that exists).

#348699Post 69 of 72

spider rolls

Re: Sushi.....

My wife and I have a little game going on. ONe rolls the die and the other person tries to guess if it's an even or odd number. If you (the guesser) get it wrong, then the other person tells you which piece of sushi to stuff into their ass and you (the loser) have to use your tongue and "fish" it out of their asshole. I don't think anyone is really a loser in this game but it sure is a lot of fun.
