I was never keen on the Cream cd, maybe because it was just various live sets from Cream events merged together to create a CD. I liked the Cream Anthems 97, it felt more like an Oakenfold set.

Re: Oakie's awesome!...right?

I can't see why everyone is so pissed over this thread. I am happy to admit that Oakenfold was one of the first DJ's I discovered when I moved from hearing IDM and ambient to actual DJ and Trance/Progressive music, and I don't regret it. This is the same feeling I have for Autechre if anyone else here knows who they are. Their stuff up to Tri Repetate is absolutely brilliant, but then album after that was ok, and even later was just so opposite of what I like I dont listen to them anymore. Which is a shame as Tri Rep is one of my top 5 cd's of all time.

All of his Essential Mixes from '99 are still stellar IMO. In fact, his mix from Australia '99 below is one one of the first DJ sets I remember downloading on this new thing called Napster when I was in college and it totally blew me away. This was a set which brought me into the whole DJ scene. In fact I am listening to this set again as I type up this post and I still absolutely love it. I even scoured the internets and hunted down the Fat Heads / Arksun / Silent Harmony tracks off of this mix on 12" back in the day.
[] Narcotik - Blue [] Jan Johnston - Am I On Pause (TasteXperience Remix) [] Tilt - Children (Tilt's Courtyard Mix) (Arista) [] Delerium - Silence (Original Fade Sanctuary Mix) (Arista) [] Slacker - God Damn Noise (Barracuda) [] Garbage - When I Grow Up (Danny Tenaglia's Club Mix) (Mushroom) [] Stone Proof - Everything's Not You (Quivver's Space Mix) (Virgin) [] Utah Saints - Love Songs (Eceo) [] Marillion - Face 1004 (Mark Mitchell Remix) (Castle) [] Sneaker - A New World [] Fat Heads - Music 4 Lunch [] Sisko - Light Over Me (Gate Of Light Mix) [] Hydro - Utopia (Native Vocal Mix) [] The Auranaut - People Want To Be Needed (Barracuda) [] Arksun - Astrodancer (Zone) [] Silent Harmony - Save The Whales (Drizziy) [] Mox Epoque - I Feel My... I am one though if you've jumped the shark I have no problem making fun of you. I totally respect and still like the stuff he did back in the day, but if Oakey and Howells are playing in clubs in my town on the same night, you better believe I'm hitting the Danny show for the whole night. No matter, Deep Dish used to be one of my tops, between their first two Yoshi cd's and their Yoshi / Shinichi in the early 2000's I loved all their stuff, but alas not so much. Just like the MJ comments. Still love the music, not so much the personality and tunes from the later days.

Also I found my old Oakey Ticketmaster stubs if anyone else likes this nostalgia besides me :D

Re: Oakie's awesome!...right?

I think Oakie will be a bit miffed that this little cash cow will be over in a few months. Gotta give the man credit for his business skills.

Re: Oakie's awesome!...right?

This is a great thread .. and some brilliant stuff posted (incl. my Brothers comments re - Oakey from back in the day). Oakey will always be a legend - his Cream residency and sets from around that time stand up against just about anyone. If you read his book Oakey's on stage persona is linked to a time when he was trying to make dj'ing more of a spectacle and taking things forward - bit like Norman Cook's 'Fatboy Slim' persona. Certainly worked at Cream .... maybe less so, amped up, in daylight, many years on and caught on video. It's funny .... but I'm sure I won't be causing offence to any David Guetta fans by posting this:

Or by drawing your attention to Henry Saiz's facebook comment: "DAVID GUETTA's the fucking ANTI-CHRIST, THE ANTI-ARTS. HIM AND ALL AROUND A mob should die the most horrible forms. EVERY TIME I SEE SOME VIDEO FOR HIS CHANCE I feel like committing suicide. HELLO TO ALL." ... now on the one hand Mr Saiz's comments are naive - as there is an industry out there and it's probably sensible not to make enemy's just on case your paths cross. On the other hand it is a sign of artistic integrity and taking a small stand for what he believes in & hopefully means that Henry will continue to keep doing things his way.

Re: Oakie's awesome!...right?

Oakie was good 2 high points for me are;

  1. Essential Mix The Goa Mix [12-18-94] - its absolute class one of only a few that have a high rating in my music collection
  2. I remember going to the 'Empire' nightclub in Middlesborough as Oakie was playing a he was brilliant all I can remember is dancing like a loon at the front of the stage all night.

But like anything his music style and taste of what he wants to play has changed, like any other DJ, nothing stays the same forever!!!

when people started complaining about oakey, it wasn't for his tune selection, it was for his careless attitude towards mixing records and building a great night with a set. i remember the old GU board used to slag him for this. diggers, sasha, coxy, etc... their music has changed, but their mixing and sequencing never wavered.

Re: Oakie's awesome!...right?

Being a cream regular from my uni years 96-99 they were fantastic nights. I'm just reading his autobiography as recommended by someone in this or another thread. Its a good read and brings back some great memories.
