I just received an email from my company saying they're donating a total of $1.1M to the Red Cross & UNICEF for this, and they're going to match 100% of all (300K+) employee donations. That's fucking crazy.

out of 300,000 employees whatever they donate his company will match (give exact same amount) as the employee.
I agree with picklemonkey. thats very comendable that she did what she did, and very sad she lost her bf, and that jet li may have died or is missing. BUT.. if she wasnt a model, would it have been on the news? i bet there are LOTS of amazing stories of survival and tragic loss, but we wont hear about them if they are not famous. I am not taking away from what these people endured, but like "they" always say, they are just people like me and you...
it's somewhat like the Pat Tillman story.. I mean yes, what he did was incredible, and unthinkable for the majority of us.. BUT.. 1000's of others have made similar sacrifices. just because he was an NFL player, doesnt make what he did any different than a man that leaves his family behind to serve his country.
Very true but high-profile people always get the press and attention. It's just the way it is. I think what they're trying to show is that the tsunami didn't have any mercy on anyone whether rich or poor, young or old. A lot of people know who Petra Nemcova and Pat Tillman are. They don't know who I am. I think helps some people put it into perspective.
what are u guys talking about??325,000 and who is matching it..

I understand that, and I also understand it is the media that has a lot to do with it.. but it some what has a tendancy to diminish the loss of other "regular" people. I am sure pat tillman, actually i am positive, he wouldnt have wanted all the publicity over what he did.. i also dont want to come accross disrespectful. It is unfathomable what these people sacrificed. :Respect:
this whole bloody situation makes you ponder.. what the fuck is going on? 1st the massive hurricane season on this side of the globe. of course no where the scale of this event. now they are saying this earthquake made the earth spin faster, and tilt more on its axis. its the end of the world as we know it...
or just business as usual for mother nature, with us in the way
How many years of records do we have for weather and geological occurances? Just a nanosecond's worth in geological time. When it starts raining fire, then you can worry.

I would love to but the servers aren't working
This is intresting:
Q: In all my surfing at tsunami related sites, none of them could provide me data of the highest tsunami ever recorded in human history. --Eran Gafni
A: In a narrow Alaskan bay about 250 miles west of Juneau, the highest tsunami ever recorded loomed to a height of 1,700 feet (520 meters)-almost twice as tall as the Eiffel Tower.

i once had a book of natural disasters that mentioned this event (took place in 1958) and showed a sketch of what it may have looked like...unreal.

Re: Tsunami hits South East Asia
There was also another Tsunami in 1964 in Alaska. There's some video of the aftermath and some others as well ...
http://www.cbc.ca/MRL/clips/rm-lo/mansbridge_disasterhistory041226.rm
In 1960 the largest Earthquake ever recorded happened in Chile (9.5 on the Ricter scale). The resulting Tsunami went all the way across the pacific from South America and killed people in Hawaii and Japan.
Re: Tsunami hits South East Asia
The death toll is now at 114,000. Just terrible. :(
Canada finally donated something.. $40 million.. it took a little too long for my liking.. Why haven't we sent DART yet.. Dart is our Disaster aid program..
Re: Tsunami hits South East Asia
114,000 dead. Give money. http://www.msf.org/ https://ssl.charityweb.net/mercycorps/giftbasket/donation.htm?pDonorIntent=SoutheastAsiaEarthquake&Custom15=wm http://www.ifrc.org/
As I was posting this the number of dead went up to 120,000. Give till it hurts.
Thanks for the donation links!! I'm not super religious but I wish along with my donation, I could send a Big Box of Prayers for them to open up & feel the love sent to them from people all over the world... I can't imagine the horrible sadness that must be sweeping them right now!! It makes me sad
updated to 116,000...this'll probably top around 200K when all is said and done..
I seriously don't believe 120,000 people are dead. I'm guessing people are just throwing random numbers out as estimates for all the people that evacuated

Re: Tsunami hits South East Asia
Ive been to see one of my customers today who lives over in Hull. Hes lost 8 members of his Sri Lankan family. 8 fuckin members for fuck sake. I felt so sorry for the fella but was extremely suprised at how well he was taking it.
I also found out today that a mate of my brothers and mine is safe and well, he was on the other side of an island that was hit.
the life insurance companies are going to go broke after this one
ok thats enough i cant?n hear or read something about it, it?s really insane that?s making me crazy :( :? :x

Re: Tsunami hits South East Asia
And on this day the lord decided to wash the earth. Amen
A 9.0 earthquake, and a wave travelling 500 kph. Tell me that isn't a message from the man upstairs.
it's hard to get a grip on this...the wave that hit the shore (as seen in some of the vids) were not even big, the water didn't seem to be moving that fast yet all these people are dead... thats fucking crazy.... when i first heard of this tsunami, i though a huge wave engulfed the whole shore... i guess its like a category five rapid all the sudden hitting the shore and not stoping for a coiple of miles..... anybody know how long the water was going inland for?
very very sad!
all these natural disasters have been happening since the begining of time and a lot of them are unreported...nowadays due to over population and media, death tolls are extremely high and information gets gathered quickly... imagine if something happened in india where there are 1 billion people, the death toll would be enormous....
something like this happened in my home country of venezuela. rains trigerred a series of mudslides, the city of la guaira was almost wiped out and the coast line changed forever
strange thing ... all elephants made it. they can not find bodies of any large animals. makes you ponder.
there hasn't been any dead sea animals... it's a wonder how animals can sense natural disasters and flee...
