Facebook - is it worth it?

I see all my friends on Facebook, posting photos, videos, gigs, giving mundane details about what they dreamt the previous night. Is it a good idea to get into the Facebook addiction - what are your experiences? Is moderation the key?

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

Apparently someone still believes Fox News. I have a Facebook, simply because NOT having one makes you the weird one these days. The only thing you can do in it is masturbate on your ex's photos, which is pathetic of course.

Not friends with my ex... :D But I see your point.

I'm guilty of being on facebook, but I try not to be annoying and post about what I had for dinner, or God forbid post drunk. That's what MS is for anyway.

So I should have one simply because everyone has one?

Handy tip : Take hi-def videos of all your girlfriends at the time, then you have wank material for life

^^^ If i had a dollar for everytime anyone said to me "everyone is on it" I would be rich. Like that is a good thing?? Individuality FTW !
I see all my friends on Facebook, posting photos, videos, gigs, giving mundane details about what they dreamt the previous night. Is it a good idea to get into the Facebook addiction - what are your experiences? Is moderation the key?
I am not on facebook but I'm pretty sure it has caused me grief!! Don't do it.!!

We've had some awful things happening here in Australia . Some arsehole kids thought it would fun to say they would release a child who has been missing for 7 years if the the page had a million hits. Others defaced the page and put up links of child porn on a memorial site for a child who was murdered last week. Once those things are out there deleting pages is useless.

What I think is weird is how many people get into it. I can understand from the promotional point of view, it can be a useful tool. But who wants tools ruling their life :)

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

I don't see how having a Facebook loses someone's individuality. Some things are popular for a reason and Facebook is no exception. You can find people you haven't met in years and see how they are doing. Nothing bad about it. In the end people who consider themselves as unique and different from the rest of the "flock", are thinking just like everyone else. The only difference is that some people express it through Facebook, others through something else (internet forum, I guess :) ).

Off Topic: Why would I want to make a HD video of me having sex with my ex? I can just have sex with her and continue fooling myself that things are going to last forever. So why would I need a wank material for later? Gotta try this in the future though :D .

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

to be honest, i didnt have one until about a month ago, and i missed out on so much... now i have one and couldnt b happier... the only thing that is a cunt is people who you arent actually friends with but know and dont want to be rude to, who ask you to be their mate on fb... kinda awkward position... and that reduces your freedom on there somewhat... also, psycho ex girlfriends who wanna be your friend and you are like, wtf????

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

FUCK. heres a facebook arsefuck for you.

a friend who i sent some photos to a while ago put them all up on facebook. there is an example of shitty facebook. they arent his they were all my personal shots from my holidays photographing graffiti in melbourne and now everyone thinks he took them. grrrr honestly, if he doesnt remove them after i asked nicely im making a complaint to fb.

I've never had a facebook. I use linkedin instead. Just doesn't seem appealing from what I've heard and seen, "tagging" and constant "updates" just because...seems lame. That said, I can certainly understand the promotional usages of it.
^^^ If i had a dollar for everytime anyone said to me "everyone is on it" I would be rich.
You know that would really only get you maybe a hundred dollars at best. You don't know that many people. No one really does. Even when they have 5000 "friends" on FB.

FB to me is a place to keep in touch with people that you feel really have something in common with you. Music, Art, Movies...but there are a lot of people (DJ's mostly) who just use it like a scaled down version of Myspace. Which I usually delete all the dj's I have on my page. I hate getting invited to shows half way around the world...and if you say you won't go, they send you another invite a few days later...by bye friend.8)

It's all about getting what you want, or need out of it. If you think it could help you out...I say go for it. Not everyone's doing it.;)

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

Well I'm counting all the times on the internet :) And I would feel quite rich with a few hundred dollars at the moment.

I keep in touch with the people I have things in common with either in real life with conventional methods , like actually talking face to face , going out with etc. or through specific forums like this. Don't have to worry about deleting anything.

Btw I'm not on Myspace either, but I like it far more because it's really easy to check out the Artist's, their music, tour dates etc.
FUCK. heres a facebook arsefuck for you.

Good luck with that. :) The premier of Qld have a really hard time getting them to take down the things I mentioned earlier. :( But once you join Facebook there ain't no such thing as personal photo's. Btw You got links to those shots seeing I'm not on facebook and don't know your friends name ;)

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

Ha ha .. good point !

I use it to keep updated on music etc. and in remain in touch with some friends.

But also limit things to people involved mainly with music ... definately no work colleagues on there - too many nosey parkers etc.

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

Its funny I go on there sometimes and see a picture that someone I know has been tagged in. Then when I've started looking through the rest of the photos then realised that the photos have been posted by people I don't even know.

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

i opened an account awhile ago just for fun and didnt use it for a year, then i connected with lots of people that i havent seen since primary school and for thet reason alone i find it useful. if you use it in moderation and dont share your most intimate things with the world it cant hurt imo

#1340115Post 20 of 94

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

I use facebook all the time and I love it. I stay in contact with people that live long distance from me, which definitely saves on phone bills!

As for privacy, there are ways to keep information about you private so only certain people can see what you want too.

However, as someone already mentioned, the downside with photo's is people that put them up with everyone having access to them. You can block pictures you are tagged in from showing on your profile, but it doesn't stop people being able to access the album, unless the other person has set their privacy levels

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

It used to be really good about 5 years ago when I was still at university.

Now I pop in every now and then just to see what's happening. At least it is better than myspak ever was.

THIS - it's like sunday brunch online. All gossip, all the time. But I guess if all the gossip stays online, i won't have to hear them cackling about this or that....

Yeah. Foxtrot Bravo (aka the Fox Brav - my new name for facebook so I don't have to sound douchey saying 'facebook') was ace back in the day. Now that everyone can join, it has lost its luster. But that's just a rule of human interaction - no exclusivity means lower value

I'm using FB simply to keep track of my parents and a few close friends who I can't otherwise chat up in gmail all the time.

someone above said link'd in - I wish they could combine fb and link'd in.

also, on the scale of social networking and maintaining friendships, FB (imo) is the lowest it can get - i'd rather get an email than a message on fb.

in other words OP - get it, but don't use it often.

(i won't get into privacy w/ facebook - it's not good at all, but that's a rant for another day).

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

as other people said fb is good for finding good griends that you havent seen for ages!!! i have found at least 20 people that i was with in school or in the army, years ago and if it wasnt for fb we might not have seen each other again! for this fb is good!

even my mates that i would see more often, due to the fact that im from Greece but live in the UK, its not so easy.. so to keep in touch with them and being able to see how their saturday went at diggers in athens is something nice! only thing doing my head in is that bloody chat... its getting worse every day...

stalking is a downside for sure, but hey.. its up to you if you are going to post your more private pics or not.. if you choose to post them, then stalking is inevitable..

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

i've gotten pretty tired of facebook. the only thing i really use it for anymore is the scrabble app they have on it.

there are rumors they are gonig to start charging people soon too. no idea if there's any teeth to that, but i definitely will not start paying for it.

I'm on it, I use to keep in touch with friends from Europe and to see if the sightless is still alive. I miss Sean. :D

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

i don't have a fb account, and I'm not planning on getting one for now...

I have the people I want to be in touch with in msn or we keep in touch via e-amail... My point is that if I'm not seeing anyone from uni or high school... there must be a reason...

#1340241Post 33 of 94

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

I absolutely hated the thought of getting a Facebook account. And then I got one. I'm glad I did, because like some other(s) have said before, I've reconnected with people from 20 years ago that I probably wouldn't have without it. And thank goodness I can easily ignore the people that I really don't want to reconnect with.
...there are a lot of people (DJ's mostly) who just use it like a scaled down version of Myspace. Which I usually delete all the dj's I have on my page. I hate getting invited to shows half way around the world...
That's one of my least favorite aspects of FB :). Even when locals dj's and promoters do it, then get all high n' mighty because you're not attending... Oh, and I LOVE how after said event is done, their girlfriends/wives/promoters chime in with how much fun it was. Yeah... ummm... that's objective :D

It's not facebook i have issue with; FB only makes it easier to see how society and culture have deteriorated (well, changed, and not for the better in my opinion). Without it, we wouldn't have lamebook... and that makes it worth it on an entertainment level, at least.

Re: Facebook - is it worth it?

it depends what you're trying to use it for.. i've met and kept in touch with a lot of friends on fb, re-connected with some old friends etc..

if you don't like it or think you're too cool for it, lol, who cares, don't use it.. but please don't attempt to make people that do use it and enjoy using it feel inferior, just makes you sound like a twat
