Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

^^^ What's a hungy ??
never seen that happen en masse, and he's always been on the forefront of music, never followed the masses, this is meant to be a good thing for a dj.. right? or should they all play the same shit that everyone wants to hear all the time, or play whatever genre is the flavour of the month you know, like a top 40/mash up/house/hip hop dj.. errr juke box

good idea, shouldn't be too difficult since i see him all the time

he is, if anything he may be at fault for trying to hard and thinking too much about his sets.. but again, is that such a bad thing?

I don't think I've seen a dj where I was on the floor the WHOLE time, that's nothing to do with what they were playing at the time, sometimes I just don't want to be on the dancefloor, lol
It's a good thing if he is taking people with him, and I'm not talking just chinstrokers. For me what makes a really great Dj is one who wants to, and knows how to, share his music with his audience. The parties that I go to don't play that stuff you mention, and I certainly wouldn't have expected it from him. And it's not an either/or situation . There are lots of other choices.

I can only judge what I have seen, and he definitely did loose the dancefloor on that occasion .

He did play a more dancefloor friendly set a couple of days later. But I'm not sure how happy he was with that

Believe me I tend to stay on the dancefloor for the whole set. People bring me water.

This is all just my opinion anyway and as such not all that important. :)

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

I would like to say that he is an afterhours dj, IMO.

Funky, low key, and usually plays to the people that know his music and the style he plays..Those are usually the peeps that go to see him.

He is underground at it's finest.

All of this is, IMO

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

But 'dancefloor friendly' is very subjective.

DJs like Carl Cox and Nick Warren don't necessarily play the most challenging music but they read the floor and can play to it, on the other hand, a DJ like Digweed has a following and his fans are more open to being challenged by the stuff he plays and have faith that he will take them on a journey no matter how convoluted it sounds, and you have other DJs like Sasha or even Tiesto who can play anything and the floor will lap it up.

And I would consider all these 'dancefloor friendly' scenarios.

We caught him in Singapore and we were the last men standing and he absolutely lived up to everything I expected and more, but I doubt if most of the crowd considered him 'dancefloor friendly.'

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

"Dancefloor friendly" = playing it safe = not three. That's not to say he doesn't slay dancefloors tho. I hate that term, "dancefloor friendly." Have some STYLE ffs.

Three is a djs dj. What is becoming a rarity these days- he has incredible range. It's always been refreshing to me to hear him play because he actually has a style, and he's always stayed true to it, unlike sooo many followers these days. Dude is one of my favorite djs. We brought him in a couple of years ago for Alphahouse, and we've got a reputation for being an underground afterhours style party, and he came in and absolutely floored the place- keeping in mind what we do, but playing multiple genres and making it all work. If you haven't heard him afterhours style, then you haven't really heard him at his best. I'd book him again in a heartbeat...actually, i think i'll get on that.

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

I saw Three in DC 2 weeks ago at a hole in the wall red, track of the night was Free-Terry Francis. he crushed it that night. Anyone who saw his SSFG in NYC at rebel when he closed for 20 people at 10am was out of control. Opened with Black Strobe- I am A man. The 20 people included Mr C Martin Lanksky and several industry heads. Great DJ
Hate to bear this news to you, but you don't know what DJ Three looks like then & missed him. But it actually reinforces what I said originally , he plays for himself rather than the punters. Which is all well and good for his loyal bunch of chinstrokers, but tends to alienate people, like myself, who quite possibly would like to learn more but are made to feel we are not worthy.

To be honest because it was obvious that he felt he was playing down to us on the "Dancefloor Friendly night. I didn't enjoy that as much as I could have.

He may be a Dj's Dj but it's not the Dj.s who are buying the tickets. It is more than just possible to be all the things he is and still be dancefloor friendly. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that term, unless you are a chinstroker of course. :)

Btw Before someone jumps on me, I don't consider chinstroker a derogatory term! In fact I love having people who can actually tell me what track is playing and some of the intricacies of the music. And thanks Jenks for reminding about his style, which is why I went to see him three times in the one weekend. :D

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

i don't see him as someone who is like that, to me he has a very distinctive sound! very psychedelic, which seems to describe the type of guy he is. i'll take a dj who plays their sound any day over one who feels the need to cater to a crowd. afterall, the crowd isn't made up of one collective mind. different strokes for different folks!

#1340899Post 54 of 77

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

You can be both, in fact in an ideal world that should be the aim!!

It had to happen I suppose , :) but I'm going to use Hernan as an example. He has definitely stayed true to himself. But he really cares that he is taking us with him !! He shows that is perfectly possible.
;) I agree wholehearted with all of that !!! But it actually reinforces what I said originally , he plays for himself rather than the punters. Which is all well and good for his loyal bunch of chinstrokers, but tends to alienate people, like myself, who quite possibly would like to learn more but are made to feel we are not worthy.
oh come on, what do you need your hand held at the club? nobody is making you feel like you're not worthy, what is this second grade? like what you like, don't like what you don't, nobody is making you feel like you're not worthy. that's on you. you want to learn? listen and get into it, if you don't dig it, go find what makes you groove. nobody is going to hold your hand and make it all fuzzy and warm.
To be honest because it was obvious that he felt he was playing down to us on the "Dancefloor Friendly night. I didn't enjoy that as much as I could have.
i don't intend this statement to be rude: but seriously, you can leave right? why should he tailor his style so it fits what you want? it's obvious a lot of people think what he does is incredible, because he's booked all over the place and packs clubs and afterhours to tons of nodding heads and gets paid well to do it. he's not playing down to you, you just don't like his style. that's on you. there are a lot of djs i won't go see because it's not for me. but i'm not going to go see them and pout and then call their crowd chin strokers for not accepting my vision of music (well i used to, lol, but i've grown up since then) hey, there's a crowd and a style out there for everyone.
He may be a Dj's Dj but it's not the Dj.s who are buying the tickets.
actually you'd be surprised. lol. but yeah, maybe, but he's booked for his style. again. and people go to see him for that style. lots of people. if it's not meeting your expectations, leave. but no need to call the people who do like it and enjoy it chin strokers on your way out because you're not getting it. what a fucking highschool concept.
It is more than just possible to be all the things he is and still be dancefloor friendly. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that term, unless you are a chinstroker of course. :)
see above.

have a nice day. :bunny:
personal insult? because I jokingly called you a Diva?
And I jokingly answered ;)

That is actually funny , people bring me water because they are worried about me overdoing it, and because they are nice people.:)

Isn't it weird how just about everyone ignored the positive things I said here. You want to keep your little cliques, you want to be able to say how "underground" you are. For me the joy in music is most definitely sharing and that means sharing opinions, and knowledge, as well as music, and being open to other peoples opinions as well.

Jenks ,sorry but most of that last post of yours was pretty ridiculous. The whole point of what I said was that I have choice. You have all reinforced what I said initially, the major difference is that you saw it in a far worse light than I did. I didn't say there was anything particularly wrong with playing for himself. As was pointed out I don't have to stay. But I was definitely open to hearing/learning more which is why I kept going to see him.

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

Three has never disappointed. Even on a huge night like Sasha's warehouse party in Brooklyn in November, Three came on and upstaged Sasha.... it was an incredible night, and if ever, that was a night full of "punters". Plenty of people were amazed.

Re: why is it so hard to see dj three

i grew up watching him demolish florida. post 2000 three does not do it for me. live, recorded whatever. i have not liked him since his florida days. the NY move and his style after that is boring to me.

this coming from him being my favorite dj from the 90s.

his skills still good.

his music is less then desirable after 2000 IMO. it is definitely unique though.
