In general I think I have a similar taste in music to a lot of people on this forum, but there is one guy who, it seems to me, everyone likes who I don't. That guy, for me, is Steve Porter. I kinda wish i did like him cos he's coming to new orleans next week and it would be a rare night out down here, but i downloaded a few of his recent live sets today and my initial feeling was confirmed. Does anyone else have a DJ that everyone else seems to love that you just dont get?

Re: DJs you dont get
ALL of the minimal DJ's that are at every festival over here in Germany, just looka t any festival flyer and you will know who I am talking about. Snoozefest!!!!!!!!!!
Re: DJs you dont get
^^^rly ? all of them?
Re: DJs you dont get
I am with chunky except I dig Hawtin. Probably already sound like a broken record when it comes to Desyn but it just sounds like diluted prog to me. And I am not dissing him in anyway because I'm sure he is good at what he does. If I am trying to convert somebody to prog without scaring the hell out of them, I would probably feed them Desyn. Nah scratch that, Northern Exposure works on everyone unfamiliar with prog.
Been thinking on this and have come to the conclusion that my taste in prog is split into two broad camps. The stuff that Digweed does, which is kinda cerebral in a mindfuck way, and the stuff that Warren does, which has good grooves and musicality. DJs like Hernan falls somewhere between them, as does His Darkness Moshic.
If this was a spectrum it'd be Warren on one end and Digweed on the other, but Desyn would fall way over on the left past Warren on the light side. :p

Re: DJs you dont get
^^^rly ? all of them?
Pretty much, and trust me I've seen most of them. I just don't get the minimal all night concept. So therefore, everytime I have gone to see these people I feel as though I get ripped off. For some reason the Germans don't even like to bring different types of music in the clubs. Every now and then you'll see somone who deviates from the rest. Like I went and saw Laurent Garnier at cocoon. That was one of the most intense, awesome sets i have ever seen, but fro the most part the music there bores me. Then to top it off, most have moved to straight laptop DJ'in and on the flyer it says ' Live set by...." and they aren't doing anything spectacular. I realize everyone has their own taste ,but that shit ain't for me!
Re: DJs you dont get
sasha after 2002, except involver 1, that was good
paolo mojo, his proton show was awesome, now his djing and productions are shit
hernan, sometimes he's ok, but pretty formulaic
jody wisternoff, just make a new way out west cd and stay off the decks plz

wow, and i thought it was about me... looks like i need to get out of germany....
Re: DJs you dont get
I agree with Hambino.. Find listening to minimal all night very very boring, no matter what dj is playing that shit.
Tiga reminds me of Bruno... Waaassuupp. His tweets are too annoying so i stopped following him.
Re: DJs you dont get
Jody Wisternoff and Dave Clarke.
Re: DJs you dont get
^^^^ wow really!
funny how everyone taste is different
I think mine would be Nick warren - I've not kept any of i sets that ive heard - and I know he has a LOT of fans on this board!
Re: DJs you dont get
Villalobos.
People over here sometimes talk about him like it´s the 2nd coming of Christ, but he´s always bored me to tears. I probably don´t do enough drugs.

I havent heard him live, but the recorded sets I have heard from him don't do a thing for me either.

An epic review that gets it ;)
effects are just a neat way to cover up the bad music you're playing
but pressing a button and twisting a knob, SHIT MAN, BEAT REPEAT. "BAW BAW BAW BAW BAW BAW" FUCKKKKKK crowd is going nuts, 8note reverb ricocheting off the fucking walls like l.l. cool j in rollerball
you goooo, you goooo, youuuuuuuuuuuuu goooooooo (fucking beat stretch, via ableton) oh shit, doesn't sound good in texture mode, time to switch to tones
crowd holds hands in air, they can't take it any more, guido's are getting boners, their bitches rubbing up against them as deadmau5 blasts through the PA. YOUUUU GO.. YOU GOOO...................reverb, reverse effect on the CDJ......BOOOOSH, DOWN THE LONGEST ROAD TO NO WHERE, holy shit all the guidos pop their cherries, people think it's the machines fogging the club up, but really is the heat and sweat penetrating through their armani and d&g attire
their bug eyed chic-miniature sunglasses can't bare the UV rays shooting from the lazers any more, all the guidos remove their sunglasses, and a huge fucking ray of light blasts from the crowd like cyclops, ZOOOOOWWWWW
deadmau5 strangles steve duda on stage, no one knows wtf is going on, he switches to an eerie halloween intro of ghosts n stuff. signals everyone to put their shit in the air, crowd follows. guido's go nuts, they're shaking in their fucking uggs right now, deadmau5 is about to drop a sick 'easy-listening vocal' of carl sagan quoting a pale blue dot as he abruptly goes back into the groove of 'alone with you', the tears from all the females fill up the room, people think the ceiling has opened and there is a storm equivalent to hurricane katrina outside, the rolling moog synth slowly comes in, the kick is hard like my boner, abercrombie pants on all the guido's rip even more than they already are during the factory process. they're fucking blow away, BADAAWAWA BADAWAWA BDADADAW, 'alone with you' is rocking the place
deadmau5 finishes his set, the crowd screams at the top of their lungs, then he takes his mouse mask off and slowly the decibel level fades from +43 to +8. the teeth have made the ecstasy enriched community of clubbers completely uncomfortable
in steps ricardo villalobos, all the guys wearing completely obscure band t-shirts, bands only they have ever heard, shirts you can't fucking buy any where, you gotta print that shit out legit silk-screen by yourself. ricardo drops a bomb unreleased opener of nina simone. when you are ready i will surrender take me and do as you willll baw baw baw baw *tribal percs, sick rolling, triplet lion drums all over the fucking place. ricocheting off their metallic encrusted scarves. ricardo is sweating already, he came on set with a completely dry deep v-neck now it's soaked in man sweat. didn't even take 3 minutes, already sweating like a race-horse at the kentucky derby. he's rolling balls. he starts to mix out of this unreleased nina simone track, goes straight into fucking latino-americanos, everyones like WHATTT DAA FACKK, shit don't fit. doesn't matter, ricky ricardo knows what he's doing, he's giving the crowd a mindfuck like they've never seen before. he's keeping the track completely without bass, slowly mixing into an obscure south american classic track, chingate puttaaaaa, WOA, chingateee putaaaa, WHOA rolling groove hats, off-beat water drums crowd doesn't even know what the fuck it means, but they love it. fist pump fist pump. 8 hours go by, and the set is still at 121 bpm, people don't even notice, they've came about 60 times already, that's all that matters. ricardo mixes out really bad, with a horrible beat repeat from his nifty red soundbyte, leaves it on a 1/4 beat loop for 45 seconds, crowd loves it. fuck it's wicked repetitive but it's working all that horse tranq i took earlier. closing the set with a white label bootleg of 'lonely island - i'm on a boat'
Re: DJs you dont get
Lee Burridge & Zabiela. defo important to keep listening though cuz at one time didn't care for Howells or Fortier either.
Re: DJs you dont get
in addition to my original post about porter, i would add desyn, fanculli and moshic to my list
Re: DJs you dont get
So who do you 'get?'
Re: DJs you dont get
I don't get sometimes the dj's that over the years use the same producers over and over again, like when is John Digweed gonna stop ridding Guy j's ass ?
Re: DJs you dont get
when guy g stops sending him exclusives and tells bedrock to fuck off?
Re: DJs you dont get
^^^oh yeah that's all it takes?
oh the Irony :p
Re: DJs you dont get
So who do you 'get?'
lots of people. for example, a few djs i've seen recently that i really liked are jay tripwire, danny howells and zabiela. Just from live sets I have always particularly liked Greg Pappastanos' sets from proton

I couldn't have said it any better.
Re: DJs you dont get
Pretty much all minimal doesn't work for me... Can't get more than 20 minutes of that sound.. Don't have any emotional thing but simply noise
Last couple of years of Digweed didn't said much to me but every time i saw him on a gig was really great.. Last Vagabond set is very nice.. Same thing with Zabiela.. From these guys always expect more quality than they delivers imo...
Danny Tennaglia.. meh
Re: DJs you dont get
Zabiela in Imo is way overrated all the times i've heard him play live was something like
loop loop loop loop efx loop loop cdj backspin loop efx throw up klingon symbol to the crowd loop loop
how the fuck do you dance to this shit?

Quite possibly the most creative DJ the planet has yet seen. His FOUR (particuitary 4.2) Series is on par with Northern Exposure and he has the ability to blend different genres like no other DJ I've seen. and loop loop loop loop efx loop loop cdj backspin loop efx throw up klingon symbol to the crowd loop loop* as opposed to constantly just blending one track into the other for 6 hours.:what
Re: DJs you dont get
i srsly understand every deejay -- every deejay that doesn't suck in my book.

^^^not to mention that his Renaissance master series was less than awful ,Don't get me wrong I I have nothin against the guy , i've talk to him a couple times and he is pretty cool , but as of the 3 past years he hasn't done much
I don't find creative killing the groove
Re: DJs you dont get
I liked his Renaissance Masters CD. And lets not forget NE 1 sucked big time when it was first released, DJ magazine refused to grade it because they thought it was so crap.
Re: DJs you dont get
^^^ did you just say dj mag lulz
Re: DJs you dont get
Haizel! :twisted::twisted::twisted:
:p
Re: DJs you dont get
Don't really know how anyone can include Zabiela in the list.. each to there own i suppose but really? Seen him a good few times live and never let me down, plus the countless mixes i have heard are superb.
Re: DJs you dont get
the point is that you dont like a guy that the majority likes. For that reason most people should be reading people's choices and thinking "what the fuck???"
