Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

I'm an old motherfucker who likes how it used to be, but still buzzes with the excitement and anticipation of hearing the fresh new stuff ... it's nice to nip back into the time warp occasionally, but not progressive or evolutionary to get stuck in it.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

@Shpira

So you're the one that goes with the flow, and accept/likes everything that's new ? I can imagine most of your points, but at the other side it's a bit strange. What's wrong with people who like the old Sasha because he had more feelings in the music in the past ? And it's not only Sasha, I think it's the whole music industry. Computers are fun, but it also brings the problem that everybody can make music (especially these days). You don't have to play a instrument anymore. Sometimes we forget what good music is about (this doesn't count for Sasha, but it's more for the normall music industry).

I'm btw not a old motherfucker I have to say, I'm just a bit tired of the minimal techy stuff that gets bored after a few times (It's sometimes just without a soul). Somebody on the other pages mentioned it too. Today everybody can make music with a pc and some midi controlls (tha'ts why the market is so overfloated), but there are only a few ones that can make music with a soul, but you have search and search and search.

You can say "go on, get over it", but that's not easy for somebody who fell in love with the "old" Sasha and with music with a soul. Hope you can imagine that...
Sorry to sound like an Angry Boy Child....but a lot of you ppl are really bitching here...

... tastes in music change, you may not like what he is playing now but others do...
Sure does, and its a bright side of this world - we are not the same! :D But isn't this a discussion topic named The Old Sasha vs. The New Sasha? :) What's wrong then with talking about old days vs. new days, some of us might like Sasha the way he is now and some others amongst us like him the way he used to be, it's all natural and healthy, no reason to be an Angry Boy Child, people are different, taste is what differs from one to another human being and this is just the discussion, no one shoud feel bad in here for liking/talking about the old or the new Sasha.. this's why we're here at this topic right, to be on one or another side and exchange our thoughts and expirience? :)
I am sure there is someone out there who is playing your dream song/set right now and you don't even know it... my point is that all of you saying Sasha lost his shit need to get out there and fall in love with a different dj and stop spoiling it for those who like it as it is...
There is someone.. there are many of them, happilly :) which's only a sign that that kind of music did not die, despite the music evolution, so i guess its also a sign that there's a big quality input in the music we're feeling homesick in here talking about Sasha's oldtimes and there's nothing to deny that. :) And once more, the topic says old vs. new... so if all of the ppl loving old Sasha would "get out of here and stop spoiling", this topic would lose its primary purpose, boy.. get over it and love Sasha the way he is now and the way you love him, but let other people love him the way they do and stand behind what you've said .. --->
Peace
Indeed :)

We cannot all love even the ice-cream the same way, some love vanilla some love it chocollate.. so how the hell can we love Sasha the same way, some love him the old-way, some love him the new-way.... but we all love him, at the end, at thats what unites us. ;)

Peace 8)

great point. seems like for all the music out there probably only 1% is actually quality.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

I think we're comparing both the music and Sasha, obviously they influence each other. If the music is 100% shit of course the DJ can only play shit. But Sasha has the ear for tunes. Come on, there was absolutely nothing like NE when it came out.

There are 3 factors here: The quality of music produced today, the proliferation of music thanks to the internet, and the DJ.

The quality of the music and the proliferation of it is a moot point because the DJ doesn't control it, and they level the playing field. So the only element here is the DJ who listens and picks out the tunes, who programs the sets, who is up there 'mixing.'

No one's whinging here, we're discussing about the history and evolution or progrssion of a DJ like Sasha who has been in the limelight for so many years, who has made an impression on so many of us.

Shpira, maybe you don't have the benefit of nostalgia that we have, maybe if that number under your username indicates your real age, you haven't had the benefit of living through some of the most memorable times of your personal life with this music, and actually grow old with this sound and these DJs.

So if you really want to contribute to this discussion, how about you tell us what you actually like about current-day Sasha.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Sasha's music has evolved -- asit should do!

I have some old sets of his live from 1989 and 1990 at Shelley's in the UK, and I still go to hear him live nowadays form tim eot time. I think he is much more musical, much more polished, rocks the party harder, uses technology well, etc.... all in all I think he has gotten better with age.

This is key.... music that you've enjoyed during certain phases of your life will always bring back those fluffly feelings that cannot be replicated hence the nostalgia.

Now I feel all warm and gooey inside just thinking about the first time I heard NE :LoveYou:

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

There´s way too much music out there, and it´s way too easy to get your hands on it.

There´s an excessive "turnover" in the music being played by DJ´s, because not only is there too much of it being produced, but also sets become available way too easily.

So i think it´s not just a question of Sasha being better or worse now, it´s also because the stuff you get to hear from him has lost it´s uniqueness, it gets diluted. And that "uniqueness" makes up for a lot in our relationship with music.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha
So you're the one that goes with the flow, and accept/likes everything that's new ?
No, I didn't say that. I think change is a natural way of everything and once I don't like something I'll move on. Then I'll come back to it in a while and by that time I would have changed as well and maybe I will like it again...example: I got pretty bored of Nick Warren around a year ago (maybe a little while before). It seemed to me that he was recycling the same set over and over again...and it just pissed me off. Then recently some members of this board (think it was feather) made me pay attention again. SO i downloaded a set and liked it. Another example would be Zabiela...hated the shit he did with Fanciulli but loving the return to the old JZ since the last Renaissance Masters he did.
I'm just a bit tired of the minimal techy stuff that gets bored after a few times (It's sometimes just without a soul).
i agree with you there...its true a lot of the stuff just misses substance there is no denying that but thats talking in general not Sasha as far as I am concerned.

IMHO he kinda lost it around...2005 maybe can't tell exactly and then he got it back pretty quickly late 2006 probably. Notable difference between this and some comments here is that I didn't reminisce on the "good old days" I just started listening to Cattaneo more :)
no one shoud feel bad in here for liking/talking about the old or the new Sasha.. this's why we're here at this topic right, to be on one or another side and exchange our thoughts and expirience? :)
Yes, true. Although I didn't attempt to make anyone feel bad about liking or disliking the current stuff Sasha "spins"...I was trying to point out a flaw in the debate itself. Its like saying Rock and Roll is the devil in the 1960's or debating whats better jazz or blues - both are great as far as I am concerned and thats pretty much how I feel about Sasha's music its been top notch all along. The problem is that people loose perspective.
Shpira, maybe you don't have the benefit of nostalgia that we have, maybe if that number under your username indicates your real age, you haven't had the benefit of living through some of the most memorable times of your personal life with this music, and actually grow old with this sound and these DJs.
As feather here nicely demonstartes...its all about nostalgia. People asociate the music sasha was playing a while back with the best periods of their lives i.e. their careless days. So its natural that they have a slight problem to relate to the new sound. If you talk to some of the people who have jut got into EDM they will swear that the music Sasha plays today is the bomb and then in all likelyhood in like 10 years they will miss this sound (by then sasha would have retired?? maybe lol)
So if you really want to contribute to this discussion, how about you tell us what you actually like about current-day Sasha.
Furthemore I would argue (having listened to Sasha's sets from as far back as '94 that its all good. I personally like the period between 1999 - 2003 best but I still think its all good. For the record I didn't listen to EDM in that period of time...well I did some psy trance but not much...anyway...how I feel about current day Sasha...hmmm Involver 2 was one of the best (if not the best) albums of 2008 and I still download and listen to all his sets (which is more then I can say for most other dj's) so he must be doing something right.

#1222347Post 94 of 114

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Well I didn't mean it that way. I concede that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but what I meant to say is we've had the benefit of listening to a select few DJs for many years and have heard their sounds change.

So I don't see this thread as a 'good ol' days' whinge. By nostalgia I meant most of us old foggies have a good perspective on Sasha, just as we would on Digweed and Seaman and Oakie etc.

The bulk of this discussion is about how Sasha's sound has changed, how he used to put more effort into picking out tunes, into programming his sets.

The prevalent thought around Sasha is that no one comes close to what he does IF he is in the mood to play. We get one amazing set from Sasha and it's like the second coming around these parts, and it magically wipes out all the crap he puts out.

You can argue that Sasha's sound has evoloved, but that's a given since it IS 2009. But so has DJs like Fortier, Van M, Pappa, Terry Lee Brown Jr, Digweed, Cattaneo, Burridge, Howells and everyone else from the old guard I can't remember right now.

I don't know about you guys but how often does Sasha surprise these days? Most of his sets (with the exception of that recent Malta set, WMC, involver 2 party, thank you mix) are simply relentless intensity, there are hardly any dips or variations. It's programmed to maintain a high that drives crowds nuts. The only differende between that and a trance set is the lack of cheesy vocals and melodies. If you want another analogy, Sasha sets are like Michael Bay movies.

Maybe he is a victim of his own success because the crowd expects that from him, and as a headliner he usually comes on at peak time. But again, I just don't see how DJs like Digweed and Cattaneo continue to do what they do on such a regular basis, surprise me, give me the chills, get into my head and turn everything inside out.

(Also, your previous post is just another knee-jerk reaction because you don't like us comparing what might be the 'old days' vs the current day. Those arguments can be applied to any old foggies reminiscing over anything including the price of Starbucks coffee.)

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Ok this^^ is pretty much the only post on this thread that makes sense to me.

I understand what you are saying...but you can't expect a dj to have an intimate relationship with his audience once he has reached the level of fame that Sasha has. I mean yeah sure there is Digweed and maybe Cattaneo but I honestly don't think they compare...don't get me wrong I am not talking about performance, i am talking about fame. In my experiance anyway Sasha is pretty much the only DJ that has true fucking grupies i.e. fans that practically worship him...let me also say that I am not one of them...I like his music most of the time and it ends there for me.

Another thing that I would like to add is that Cattaneo and Digweed IMO are dj's that create the "Vortex" almost all the time. I have rarely been disapointed by their performances (once by Digweed at a festival performance adn never by Cattaneo) Sasha on the other hand IMO is all about wham-bam tactics. Most of the time he will drop bomb after bomb pretty much throught the set and that kinda gets stale but when he is given the opportunity to shine he does just that e.g. the Malta set.

I think its all about picking the right venue for you as an artist...if you don't feel the crowd then you can't be expected to bring your best game. Thats just my oppinion and maybe I am wrong.

God now I feel like listening to 7 hour set by Sasha hmmm where is that Warung beach set from way back???

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

The only members whose posts here have any true validity imo are the one's that go see sasha at least 3-5 times a year. You can't experience a sasha set at home the same, even on the worlds best speakers the same as you can in a club live.

Secondly, If you were taking drugs back in the late 90's early '00's, those memories are going to be extra special, because why you ask? You were feeling EXTRA GOOD THEN!!!

Lastly, if you are younger (20 - 25) right now, it would be only natural for you kind of feel as though you missed out on the best EDM has had to offer which was during the mid 90's until early '00. Any big dj will confirm that.

I'm inclined to agree but at the same time, we could say the same about Digweed or Cattaneo or any of the DJs. Some music, some sets, are best heard on a loud sound system, but surely if we're talking about the flow or programming, that can be guaged in any setting?

The flip side is, when you're in the midst of it on the dancefloor, you would probably be less concerned with the flow as long as the DJ is mantaining the bpm or energy, which imo is what Sasha does more often than not.

I have to admit some of recent stuff been Top (Thank you mix & Malta set) For me his set from Orlando in 2005 is the best i ever heard from him, simply amazing.

Also his Peru set 2004 was wicked.

So I was listening to GU13 today. I dunno how anyone can think any of the newer Sasha stuff is better than this. CD 1 is pretty much perfect in my books.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Agreed, CD 1 is perfect. Of course, 1999 was perfect....

Although, I think Invol2ver is the best album he did since GU13(not an album, but the EM in 2000 was first rate as was Delta Heavy EM.....)

Maybe it's a stupid idea, or maybe it's not, but I was thinking of a reply to Alexander Coe aka Sasha himself. Is this done before ?

It could be a lot of fun to hear how he thinks about the whole change, just for us, merceryserver. If there are people with more questions we can ask them too offcourse.

#1299103Post 114 of 114

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

sasha has taken us on a musical journey thoughout lots of genres throughout his career and he had to, evolve or die. I myself being an oldskooler never knew of sasha in the early 90s (I know must have been living under a rock) but I was into a more harder trance/house sound back then, I have spent the past few years researching his old sets and from someone whos holds no real nostalgic memories for ''that sound'' he gives me the shivers even to this day. their no question the golden peroiod of electronica was the 90s and sasha captured the best of it at different points not only sasha of course but too many to name in terms of DJ's. I have listened to a lot of sashas latest offerings and mixes and I enjoy them but its straight back to the 90s everytime and I'll never leave. Peace.
