Digweed "peak time" mode sound

#6895Post 1 of 79

i've posted this topic awhile back before the current incarnation of MS. basically, i was looking for more digweed sets that represented his "peak time" mode. it's faster, harder, and more bangy than what we usually hear on the usual kiss sets with studio mixes. if you go see him live, he usually hits this mode deep into the night after few hours of play. it's really mental!

i'm looking for stuff when digweed was playing harder and faster. an example of such set is: kiss fm - live at club code, japan, pt 2 sept-23-2000. another set is: digweed - Live From Massive Ulricht Germany 02-26-2000.

granted, these sets are over 4 years old but that's the kind of sound i'm looking for. as much as i love prog house, i feel that today's popular prog house djs don't have the energy of digweed's peak-time, much less his sound from circa 2000. even great djs like satoshi tomiie and hernan cattaneo, as good as they are, still play the usual paced, controlled prog house. it's nice but lacks the BANG!

this being a digweed fan forum, i'm sure most of us are into prog house and i'm not sure how many love trance - the airy, cheesy stuff that tiesto and pvd puts on. having said this, i guess what i'm looking for is prog house with the tempo of trance but without the fluffy cheese. i want it hard but not hard house like judge jules or richie hawtin. get it?

it's hard to find digweed sets that sound like the 2 mentioned above. i've also d/led a fair share of his live kiss sets, not the studio kiss sets. but many don't have the crazy, bangy hardness. maybe the broadcasted part wasn't from peak-time. i listened to the beirut set. awesome! but not bangy enough. and so on and so forth.

since these types of digweed sets are hard to find, it doesn't have to be digweed. it doesn't even have to be a set from a famous dj. but who spins the type of sound i'm looking for? any set suggestions? (it should be avail on ss). thx.

i'm not really into digweed...but that Massive set from germany is kick ass.

i still listen to it.

What about his beiruit set. The 3rd and 4th parts are bangin. Damn to many to name. The wmc kiss 100 mix from 2001 is also really good. His E-mix from bedrock's 4th b-day is really good too.

#304437Post 4 of 79

he's looking for something pitched up more

#304440Post 5 of 79

I hear what you're saying. The reason he's the best in the business is because when he works a groove, he really works a groove - whether it be banging or nice and cruisy. It's amazing how you can look at a crowd and they're hanging off every banging note, he can really command a crowd and leave them slaving to the dark beat, it's beyond me how he manages to do this so well, and I can't find another DJ that can do it quite like he can.

I wish I had more of the dark, banging diggers sets you're asking for. All I can see in my collection at the moment is (Oct 26, 2001) - John Digweed Live at Arches, Scotland. It's a Kiss show and really gets a bit mental about half way through it.

I'm sure theres more in my collection but I'm having a hard time finding it in my hungover state :(

Peak time mode just sounds funny to me.. reminds me of this one time I overheard a conversation between some fan and digweed..

Fan: Hey John, how's it going man? Digweed: Just spinning records man. Fan: That track is slammin! Digweed: Yeah its a good one. Watch this though, I'm about to switch over to peak time mode.

After that, I swear I saw him turn some little knob right behind his ear. And repeat the words "peaktime, peaktime" over and over!

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

youll never trully HEAR an "after 6 a.m. set," from john with the very few exceptions online. first bc he gets some of THE best releases out there (now being cdr's) and cannot play them without consent from the producers. second being, why would he want to give everyone that feel, that sound, when if hes spinning at 8 a.m. and is playing these mindfuck tracks? his later tracks are MEANT to be played LATER ON, without the commercial crowd that he and sasha draw now. simple as that.

then again im a twilo fan speaking, so i dont know how all you other fuckers feel lol. i was spoiled for years. especially the last 4 months.

peas.

i think i need to come back to the dark side....its been a while!

look around for his live set from wmc 2001. John Digweed_Live @ Crobar, Miami (03-24-01)

most wicked fucking music i think ever recorded. tough, proggy, nasty to the bone, etc etc

[ms] hosted this one a few months ago, but it should be all over soulseek.

also cant go wrong with the beirut set from Feb '04. amazing shit from beggining to end. he's a true craftsman. 8)

#304529Post 10 of 79

thx for the replies. it's awesome that many of us enjoy that dark, dirty, hard, bangy craziness from diggers. well, any other set recommendations? from other djs? really, it doesn't have to be from digweed. as long as the set captures those characteristics... ^^;

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

I would suggest you look for John Digweed live @514 productions party , Montreal 2000-11-18. very very banging set  event though its two parts only.

#304542Post 12 of 79

yup, this set from montreal is real hard!! one of my 'old' favs!

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

try the hotmix on tong's show from last february. awesome! just like the old days

#304586Post 14 of 79

I feel the same way... The filth he puts out after 4:00 AM is just beautiful. It's dark, nasty, mind blowing. I can't described it, other than you know you've just witnessed something special. I wish that one day someone can record him from 4 on. I don't know of any sets that capture that. He recorded himself @ the Space closing party while playing stuff like that, but I don't think he'll share it with us. At least I've seen him for the past 3 NYE's and boy does he switch gears for that. :D

#304606Post 15 of 79

Hi, first post! I think your right about Digweed not sharing his beasty sets with us. I beleive he does this deliberately to make his appearances that bit more speical, which they most certainly are. When he plays like this (stomping darkness), it really has to be experienced to be believed. IMO this is what makes him the best dj on the planet. I love the excitement and anticipation he creates at the start of his longer sets, he builds and builds the tension, then rewards you with sheer music madness. At Fabric last time he was almost (emphasis on almost) got as hard as Cox! Simply mind-blowing. :)

#304612Post 16 of 79

speaking of which, maybe his fabric cd in the new year will be a dark dirty motherfucker.

can't wait.

I beleive and hope this will be his most underground mix CD to date, and ill definitely be at Fabric when he plays there. I crave the genius that is digweed after 4.00 am :RightOn:

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

Anyone who hasnt seen digweed live is really missing something very special, he'll start off minimal or somethin and youll be thinking "This isnt great at all" then BANG, and it just takes off, the man is unreal :RightOn:

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

His regular shows I agree aren't peak time stuff, but he gets into some nasty stuff sometimes when he broadcasts his live shows. I really enjoyed the Club Yellow set from Japan in 2001.

Don't forget that listening to a mix from downloading and being at a show are different. The vibe from being at a Digweed show when he gets going with all the other people is part of the magic.

#304658Post 22 of 79

Diggers still rulez!

It's available on Soulseek. Otherwise I believe it's being hosted by Mercury Server.

try this: john digweed @ yellow, tokyo 2001

#305091Post 27 of 79

well danny howells can throw down some awesome shit too, and there are a few sets by him that I could recommend. One is called Danny Howells live at lovefields or something like that. All I remember is the second song is Underworld - Two months off, and the whole set really kicks ass. Also, his set from the hague from 6 months ago.

#305095Post 28 of 79

the yellow set (all 4) is the first live set i ever listened to that i d/led from the internet :) found djmixes2k in the summer of 2001 and they were hosting it.

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

IMO, Digweed's "peak time" sound doesn't really translate all that well to home listening... Those dirty, dirty tracks he twists the fuck out of post 5am just don't work anywhere except the depths of a club.

I think if you want to hear that, you've got to go see him live...

it may not sound as good at home coming out of the tiny computer speakers... but oh man, when i'm driving, with my 12in subwoofer pounding out the bass, it brings the club right into my car. 8) i don't mind driving so much when accompanied by kickass music.

if i had a choice, i'd go see him live every week. but digweed visits my city only once a year or year and a half... don't have that luxury... so i have to find other means to enjoy his sound. his kiss sets are more than abundant. but his crazy mental stuff is rare. that's why i ask...

Thats hilarious...

Those sets are from 2000, when prog sound was trancier and bigger.... it will all come back eventually.

One of my all-time favorite diggers mix. Blinding set. Absolutely brilliant set all the way through.

Seeing Digweed in 7 days. Hooraaaaaaaaaaay! :) :) :)

I am beyond excited. I'm trying not to ramp it up too much in case I'm disappointed - but I seriously doubt I will be!

Re: Digweed "peak time" mode sound

I've seen Digweed about 5 times over the past 5 years. He used to just blow my fucking mind. He's still my fave. But last time I saw him in Los Angeles a few months back, I think he lost something....good, even great, but nothing mind blowing...

@ the Mayan last time? I would tend to agree with you, he was good, but I've seen better sets come out of him.

Any listened to Digweed's Newcastle set? I only had one part....it was sick.
