Just got back from matter.

Digweed was phenomenal - we left at 6.15 and he was still going on.

This man seems to get better and better each time I see him - I went with some friends who had never seen him play before, and now they cant wait till the next Bedrock!!!

I have to admit tho I spent quite a bit of time listening to Guy J - who in my opinion played an incredible set - I had a word with him after his set finished and he told me he was working on the follow up to Esperanza - goody!

No pics yet, can barely type - hope all who were there enjoyed it.

Happy Easter and Pesach to one all.

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

7.40 a.m.

I'm too worn out to post details ... v little sleep and got to drive back for the football in the morning. Special mentuion to Dzone and FunkyKarma who few in from Dubai ... top top blokes. As ever the UK [ms] crowd was well represented with Chunky, Adzey, Maff and Mighty Greg giving AndyH a send off !

Adzey's got a brilliant photo of himself and AndyH with Diggers !

Great warm up by suprise guest Jimmy Van M - a real treat.

Diggers played 6+ hours of brand new dark music ... building and building and then the last 2 x hours of his main set just releasing and hitting you hard !

Then he did 90 mins of a Renaissance/Northern exposure vibe til they finally kicked him off the decks so they could close.

I posted this on Bedrock:

"Re: Bedrock last night at matter

Great night, we had a Mercuryserver meetup and the site was very well represented

Jimmy opening up was a lovely suprise and he played a tremendous set, and some real gems.

Managed to get a photo with JD and even had a quick chat with the man himself about why the Bedrock 10th set may never see the light of day (John felt it was very special and to be kept in then memories of those who went, rather than have the music taken apart and over-analysed). I very much respect where he's coming from, much as it pains me to say ! So a big thanks to John for being a top bloke and running such a fantastic night.

To make the point that the 10th Birthday had gone, it was all new music from 12 til 6.30 - honestly its amazing how JD manages to put it all together in such a cohesive format. It was dark driving beats and a set that built bit by bit, hour by hour ... much as I imagine a 6-8 hour set at Twilo or Yellow would. If he'd taken a couple of hours out of there and released it as a GU box set I think we'd realise just how good the programming and music was.

It would have been easy for Diggers to play the classics again - but he's a progressive DJ and it's about looking forward and living in 2009 ... cleary he's enthused by the new music that's out there, searching out the new new tunes as well as running his label, and he must go through a mind boggling amount of tracks each week to do this.

So it wasn't a re-run of 10/10 ... but a brilliant and cutting edge set on its own right.

As for Matter, it's well run and nice to have a bit if room and be able to get to the bar/loos. Thought the lasers were great too ... great view of the DJ booth + you can take some time out, and look down on what Diggers was doing from the balcony and really take in what's going on in the club. The set up looked like a flight simulation console !

But my, was it loud and that dancefloor can vibtrate too much (that's me getting old). Think I'll be investing in some ear plugs next time. The O2 is a pain in the arse to get to/back from.

Stayed til the 7.40 finish ... Everything in Its Right Place was inspired - dunno if JD was blending a couple of versions together, but it sounded awesome as he broke it down and twisted it.

That's it for now, until the 3 x S&D b2b dates in May."

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

Wurgh, never thought I would be writing this but I was actually very disspaointed. I have been dreaming about the 10-pm - 2am set from Diggers for months so I was actually pissed off to see that JVM was doing the first 2 hours. He is an awesome DJ but how often do we ever get to see John warm up? Plus that is generally my favourite time of night anyway because I much prefer the deep dark stuff rather than later on when the music is much harder..

Anyway, even when John did come on I still didnt think that he was that great. I could appreciate that it was a very clever set whth the programming etc but it just really didnt do it for me and the crowd was not exactly screaming in the way that they usually do at Bedrock. It seemed to get too hard too quickly and never changed from there on. We were loving it from about 4 -5 where it definitly went in to the vortex but as soon as that finished it was so militant that i puked and had to get out of there  (sorry for not saying bye again boys, there was no way I was going back on that dancefloor again lol)

Sorry to be so negative but it is the least I have enjoyed a Bedrock for years. I still had fun and it was really good to meet up with the MS lot again, but its a shame especially considering we changed our flights for it (and prob wont be at another one for a year now :( )

Sweet pic btw Adz, is there any chance you can email me a copy as it seems really small if I just copy and paste it fro, here...?

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

it was a great night for sure, Diggers started destroying the place, a bit after 4.30am until the time we left (6.00am) as i had to get back for work at 15:00 and we had to do a 6h journey (if not a bit more) from there to Leeds. plus we thought diggers would finish at 6:00... although we didnt stay, im happy he carried on for another hour and a half as im sure whoever stayed, enjoyed it!! sorry guys for not meeting with you, but our hotel was in greenwich (our room looks exaclty like yours! lol) and we went from there straight to the club.. no pints or anything before matter.. next time i'll plan this better! i went to room 2 at some point and stayed for 30-45mins and i must say too that guy j played a great set. i think i need to d/l some lives of him, for sure! great performance! also security, all top blokes, at the bar was always space and someone free so you could order quickly and smoking area was ok. it got better in the morning when the light came out! with the river next to the club and with the weather being so warm, it just reminded me of my clubbing days in the greek islands! ive got a few pics too and some videos of the night. ill upload them and ill put them here!

10/10

next now is s&d in leeds 23rd of may! and at least im next to my home and im not working next day!!! lol

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

erm.... holy fuck what a night... awesome surprise to see jimmy van m warming up as i've never seen him before and expected digweed to be on from 10... john absoutely nailed it... i recognised one tune from the night (altes kamuffel) and the rest of the tunes were completely new to me...

funny to see him getting fucked behind the decks with guy j - downing triple vodka's hahaha... he was pretty worse for wear but it didn't affect his mixing!

seriously good night, completely different to Bedrock 10... crowd was friendly, jimmy, john and guy j were sound as fuck... roll on S&D!!

Lol, I am a miserable git but I know Adz agrees with me, two other mates who have been going to Bedrock sine the beginning left early pretty pissed off, and TheMightyGreg (god I hate calling him that) left at about 3am in protest! :p

what was your take on the night then?

#1198753Post 23 of 84

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

Special, special night, made all the more special by meeting up the MS lads SimonR and Adzey (fellow long-stayers), Chunky, DZone, MAF (Glory Glory Man Utd LOL), AndyH and some of the non-MS'ers as well.... hope this isn't the last time we do a meet-up (SW4 perhaps?)....Diggers was dark, devastating, relentless....par excellence in my opinion....clearly the best sets he does is when he builds it up over many many hours...I'm sure he'll come to Dubai some point this year, but 12pm-3 am doesn't cut it for me, especially after this Marathon and 12-6 at the Guv last year....and a pleasant surprise to see JVM warm-up.....best vantage point for me was clearly above the DJ booth where I was chilling with SimonR for a bit and soaking up the view....didn't really bother with room 2 really, but would have been good to see Guy J....best moment, hard to say, there was this female vocal tune he dropped around 1.5 hours in with a very upbeat bassline....I'd have to say the remix or whatever he did of Love Stimulation.....the breakdown sent these warm waves over the dancefloor....a night that I'll never forget :-)

Am currently recovering in Cambridge right now but if there's anyone doing any clubbing in London or in the area over the next week give me a shout, would be good to have another go....

yeah i do agree with AndyH but i did stay till the end unlike the southern softies on their home turf ;)

i spose i was expecting too much after bedrock 10 but some of diggers transitions between songs particulary fairly early on werent that great and would of been nice having a bit more melody

Great to meet you Vish .. glad you had such a brilliant time and your great company and a cool bloke - so we'll all defo have to meet uo at some stage.

BTW ... make sure you upload/mail the photo of us with Diggers when you get a chance !

Opinions differed on his set ... obviously a Bedrock 10/10 part 2 would have been amazing, but JD felt that was a one off. So it was all new music - and a real heads down builder ... pity AndyH and the guys missed the last hour of new stuff as Diggers really let it go and played some great tracks.

I have to say that the it was so loud and the vibrating dancefloor get too much when the really heavy beats and bass-lines come in .. .no wonder the Vortex made AndyH feel sick - still it was worth changing your flight just for the classic photo !

Vish is right ... the balcony was just it bit less noisy, and was easier to take in what was being played and appreciate it - Diggers was working like a wizard. A few more vocals, breaksdowns and killer tracks would have been sweet - but I had a great night. the proof will be how the set sounds if some of it comes out.

Here some professional pics (not mine I might add !)

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

Wasn't impressed by this at all. Jimmy Van M's warm up wasn't particulalry well structured - was far too fast and hard when we got in (about half 10) and although it did massively improve it wasn't what i was expecting. Digweed's set was , imo, pretty flat the entire time i was there. Admittedly I left at around 3 and by all acounts it got much better for a couple of hours after than, but it had just lost me you know? I felt like i really had to try to get stuck in - shouldn't be like that :(

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

I had a great time, it was great to see everyone again and some new faces, funkykarma was cool and Mav and his mates where just a laugh a minute. I got in to late to really get into Jimmy Van M's set so I couldn't really comment. I had a great time, I enjoyed what he was playing. I had to leave about 5.45 as my mate had booked a Taxi. I ended up at a crazy party till 11 PM with an ex Coronation Street actress and children's TV presenter.
