I need some Melatonin!

Does anyone here have trouble sleeping at normal times or sleeps in random patterns like 3-4 hours in a go...my sleeping has been fuked for a while now...I go to bed at like 6 in the morning sometimes 9 and sleep through a large chunk of the day or I have like 2 naps like from 2 in the morning till 5 and then in the afternoon again...

I am generally against sleeping pills but I am getting kinda of desperate for a solution... I tried not sleeping for like 24h and then going to bed and I just end up sleeping normally that one night and then I cant fall asleep the next...its MAD.

Anyway...just venting my frustration...I can't exercise, can't do some of the work I have to do during the day and to top it all off I look like shit cuz I haven't slept all night...:x

p.s. haven't slept all night and off for a fun day of lectures...If I don't collapse, I thank god for shades and headphones!

Cut back on the alcohol perhaps? Alcohol can disrupt sleep.

I have similarly fucked up sleep, I think my body only sleeps on alternate nights because that's the only time it's tired enough to knock out after a previous night of not sleeping (like last night). :(

Melatonin might help, but it doesn't knock you out. You will need to want to sleep, and have the conditions conducive to sleep. What it does is send you into a deeper sleep AFTER you fall asleep. But depending on how your body handles it, you might wake up with a hangover from the melatonin and feel groggy (I do).

Alternatively try 5-HTP which helps you sleep and is good for your moods too. It used to work for me but not anymore :(

Try exercising early in the morning or afternoon, that might help. Again, depending on your body, you might not be able to sleep a few hours after exercising (like me) so do it first thing in the morning. You'll probably feel fucked by the late afternoon but you'll have a good sleep at night.

Cultivate a good sleep cycle like waking up and sleeping on time, make sure there are no external disturbances, no light, etc.

Too bad I've tried all this shit and I'm still not sleeping. What I need is some good bud I reckon. :what:(

Re: I need some Melatonin!

I was in a very similar situation recently not being able to sleep - took tabs for 10 days just to get my sleeping pattern back to normal then stopped the pills.

Booze kills your sleeping pattern and maybe even look at what you are eating and at what time you are eating.

I am also dead against pills but it worked. Used the analogy that if my leg was broken I would take pills for the pain - same difference.

Well said , read a book....or jog , eat a fairly heavy meal before going to sleep at nights, chew some valerian and chill.

-Avoid things that give you energy or put you on alert at night like powerdrinks , cigarrettes, and sugar ,

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Re: I need some Melatonin!

cut out the naps! get some ambien do 3 or 4 nights with it to get back to normal rhythm then stop. but then have a completely routine schedule for bedtime - do the same things right before bed, in the same order. and don't do anything else in bed except sleep. no tv no books etc. and increase your exercise during the day.

and no booze in the hours before sleep either.

good luck!

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Guess I'm a very lucky lady as I've never had sleeping problems. I get on average 7 to 8 hours a night no problem. I rarely wake up during this time aswell. Gonzo, knocked out. nighty night. Hope you can figure it out as that would be maddening.

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Routine, have to develop a mental routine before you sleep, visualize yourself sleeping, shut down the brain, it works for me, all the above advice is great as well, booze is a killer on sleep, melatonin works, just take it a half hour before you go to sleep, just wait for it to hit you, not as solid as sleeping pills but I use to take them and unfortunately it is real easy to get overly dependent on them.

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Yeah I exercise and don't drink that often...i mean like once a week I may have a couple of beers and some tequila...but nothing on a regular basis. I tried smoking bud and that does help but I have a healthy tollerance so its kinda expensive. I am hoping to do it naturaly...without pills but if I don't manage by the end of the week...I am buying some pills. Thanks for your replies guys :)

p.s. I do have a problem with coffein it realy fucks me up...so i need to cut that shit for sure

#1176832Post 11 of 87

Re: I need some Melatonin!

probably just a phase. the only way to break the cycle is to go to bed at 9-10pm after you haven't slept much the night prior. Start running in the mornings, your all set.

Don't forget that there is a way in which the brain can systematically shut down anything you are trying to do to it. If you don't allow the Melatonin to work with you, you are working against it and will never see any results from it. Melatonin is a natural chemical in the body that is released when your bedroom is dark and your eyes are closed. It is what helps you get to sleep. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't get enough in their bodies and it makes it hard to sleep.

One thing that truly helps in getting to sleep and sleeping well, is to meditate before going to bed, as you are laying there, get out your ipod and put on some Harold Budd or Steve Roach and listen to one or two songs and allow your mind to float with the music. Don't think of all the crap that has happened that day. As racing thoughts can really kill your ability to get a good nights sleep. I know from experience, having battled that for a good two to three years.

Re: I need some Melatonin!

ah nice one sir steve. love valerian, it's the only one i use, it always knocks me right out. i usually sleep great all the time, but i'll ever so frequenly use valerian for its great vitalizing and replenishing benifits.

on the other hand, fuck narcotics, treatment with narcotics is like curing by use of snake venom imo. got way over that buisness quickly.

Re: I need some Melatonin!

I honestly don't know what the hell my problem is...I drank only one can of coke all day yesterday and I didn't sleep the night before and I went to the gym an had a nice workout yesterday... I had like a 2 hour nap in the afternoon yesterday just so that I could gather up some energy to train...I exercise regularly 3 days on, one day off...I don't know I am gonna go to the pharmacy tomorrow and try and get some advice on what to buy...

I used to have a tactic for falling a sleep and its worked wonders for years...I used to lie in bed and imagine myself doing kick ups. I would concentrate really hard on that and nothing else and I would be asleep very quickly but about 6 months ago it kinda stopped working so the only time I can fall asleep is when I like pass out from exhaustion...

p.s. at least I can eat more this way and probably retrieve some of the weight I lost during the summer.

Re: I need some Melatonin!

This may sound a bit off but...

I've noticed that the days that I spend most of time in front of my laptop i find it hard for me to go to sleep.

Have you considered , lowering down the hours you are in front of yours and finding something else to do , I mean it could be doing something to your nervous system also messing up your circadian rhythm .

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Re: I need some Melatonin!
You didn't read that link I put up, did you ?:)
Hehe I didn't before but I did now :) The thing is I know all that...I don't have a TV in bedroom, I only use my bedroom for sleeping (and...), its well ventilated...I exercise. I am not gonna give up smoking for better sleep...and I try and keep caffeine at reasonable levels...I don't eat fatty foods; I know a lot about nutrition so I eat healthy; low/medium carbs intake, high protein...fat intake depends on the way my workouts are going...

To be honest I don't think I should have to change my life fundamentally just in order to get some quality sleep. I think its jut that I had been in this sleep pattern for a while now and my body is kinda used it...so all I need to do is keep trying to get to sleep at the normal times and not sleep during the day... I may get something to help me get to sleep or rather to keep me asleep...the thing is this a pretty bad time for me to be dealing with this shit...the end of my final year at uni..

that might be a problem...thats true, its my addiction to MS :) On a more serious note...yeah I thought about computer usage being an issue because I have been spending more than usual amount of time on it since January...might have to cut that shit down...

#1177149Post 30 of 87

Re: I need some Melatonin!

^^ I am not a fan of sleeping pills, but even for a few nights to get you back into the habit of sleeping might not be all bad. The computer issue could be a problem, particularly if you participate in the politics forum

Btw The things I meant you hadn't read were the bits about napping and exercising earlier rather than later. :)

Re: I need some Melatonin!

Well strangely enough having slept for only 4 hours the previous night and having no sleep the night before I had a really good workout today and I actually feel pretty good, fresh, relaxed...normally I get really nervous and grumpy if I don't get enough sleep...It must be all the supplements I started taking...

Sorry about your neck how did you do it? The only time I got hurt in the gym was when I turned my head to look at a girls ass with a pile of weights on my shoulders...it really wasn't worth it.
