Re: Twitter

Not sure I have enough tech savvy friends to get proper use of this, also bit of a recluse, but going to give it a shot anyway.

Re: Twitter

signed on a few weeks ago, and find it pretty interesting. Had to turn off device updates for some of my friends, though, as my phone was getting bombarded with tweets.

Find any cool/unusual people to follow?

Re: Twitter

I dont get it really? Your real life friends tell you where they had lunch, without having to actually speak to you; and you find out the antics of complete internet randoms?

or am I missing something obvious?

You're not missing anything, but here's how I look at it -- I have increasingly less time to spend with my friends, but with twitter, I still feel like they are a part of my day when I hear about the minutiae of their daily lives. Every now and then, too, someone will post something really thought interesting or thought provoking.

Now with that said, not everyone I follow gets forwarded to my phone -- some people tweet too damn much, some people don't have anything of interest to say at all, etc. I try to make an effort to limit it to 3 or 4 a day, to chronicle the more significant thoughts and events, whereas some people will literally send out tweets like "taking a crap." There will probably be a day where I take a dump of such magnitude that it warrants inclusion on twitter, but that hasn't happened yet.

I generally do not follow random people on twitter unless they happen to do something unique that is worth reading beyond the reason you would normally subscribe to a twitter feed. There is one person in particular that does all of her posts in haiku, which I think is pretty cool.

Re: Twitter

I think the obvious aspect is the ready nature of so many people to hop on board with out thought, twisted humor or blind following, researching at the moment.

Absolutely am not getting the point of this website. It's been touted as the next big social network for a while now.

Re: Twitter

I've contemplated signing up for it, but I haven't because I think Facebook's status update is one in the same. I don't know as many friends on Twitter as there are on Facebook to convince me to move to it

If I'm not mistaken, you can link the two, so when you update your twitter status, it updates your facebook status and vice-versa. The primary benefit to twitter over facebook is its mobility, I think -- anyone with a mobile phone can use it, and you can have other people's updates sent directly to your phone.

Can be handy for when you need to update a large number of people of something at the same time. Let's say you're going to Mardi Gras with a group of 10 people and you each subscribe to each other's twitter feeds. When you inevitably get separated, just send out a text to twitter saying "Pat O'Brien's @ 3" and everyone is notified at once without you having to individually text or call 9 people.

Lots of other applications, too. It's not a revolutionary tool by any means and it doesn't replace facebook, but it does fill a niche...

I had signed up about a month ago and I am just starting to go on and use it. It is very strange going from facebook to twitter though. But its worth a shot.

Re: Twitter

i personally think it's an incredibly dumb site. it's nothing but a bunch of status updates. Something I don't do very often, because I like my privacy.

Re: Twitter

I just recently joined, figuring I would see what the fuss was all about. Seems ok so far, but I think it will take a little time to really appreciate it. Other people on here should post their twitter usernames, I wouldn't mind following some fellow MS'ers. Mine is: http://twitter.com/zabeljj

Re: Twitter

So when you wake up and feel the urge to drop a huge bomb on the toilet, you take your cell phone out and write an update on Twitter about it? OK this was a poor example but I still do not get why people use Twitter. If I want to update my friends, I can give them a call or send an SMS to a bunch of them. What do I need Twitter for? To become even more anonymous and not talk with friends for real but only digitally? I heard some use it to share news and Twitter is faster than regular media but I also do not need to know if a celeb farted on the street and a dude with a phone and camera made a video of it. I see the point of promotion in Facebook and MySpace but if this is only to update friends, I still prefer "real" contacts.

Re: Twitter

I just signed up tonight to see what the fuss was all about and it's kinda neat, but nothing spectacular. Maybe once I get the hang of it there are neat features, etc. that I'm just not seeing yet...

Re: Twitter

Digweed has a Twitter account. @djjohndigweed. Terry Grant is also on there @terrygrant

I go back and forth with my sentiments about Twitter. I find it useful because it's like an IM that you don't have to log into, and people don't have to care whether you're "out there" to receive it. I love how I can simply broadcast a thought/idea and my friends who follow me get it.

I follow a number of people that I enjoy hearing ideas from - I work in technology so there's people like Tim O'Reilly (publishing), other developers, etc. who post thoughts and ideas about stuff. Interesting links get sent around, it's a great place to plug into the vibe of an idea as it traverses around if you're into that.

It's interesting because it lives in that world between blogging and IM. It's "published", but it's conversational - more than a blog is. A blog can turn out to be just talking at people. On Twitter it's one big stream of consciousness.

You just have to realize that you don't have to read every message that comes at you. I hop on maybe twice a day, see what's going on, and get out.

You can follow me @futura if you're curious. There's not much wisdom to impart, but I do typically like to post when I'm listening to a mix I enjoy.

Sen. John McCain has actually just gotten onto Twitter recently and is a prolific -- and occasionally hysterical -- tweeter. His post recent tweet:

How does one manage a beaver? Uh, nicely put, Senator...:lol::lol:

Re: Twitter

I can kinda see the point of it. Sure it will never replace facebook for real social networking but i think twitter has its good points..

Like keeping up with interesting people's daily lives. Like James Zabiela and Nick Warren post daily with some good pics/info.

Or i recently gave my parents the link to my twitter so they can see what I'm at. Like they don't need to sign up to look at that plus they are alittle old for the facebook generation.

Here's my twitter account.. www.twitter.com/mikeoreilly
