Anyone still play this mix regularly? I miss those days:shock:

Can anyone confirm that GU19 was recorded at the Mayan in LA?

Back when GU19 first dropped, I remember being floored after hearing Satoshi's "love in traffic" for the firs time...

Re: Gu019

I was floored from Apollo Vibes, Love In Traffic was sexy, but everything from Penetration onward was down the proverbial rabbit hole. This mix scarred me. Hmmm maybe time to pull it out again, it's in my 'permanent collection' in my iPod.

i think all of the GU's are made like that... inspiration kind of compilation.

always loved reading the story in the book though, sad GU went to the crapper in recent years :(

ahhh that makes much more sense...I was lucky enough to have been at several of his sets at the Mayan, seems like such a long time ago now...

it encompasses the vibe late at night in a big city like LA well...I haven't played it from start to finish in years, will do so soon though.

Re: Gu019

I'd say out of all the Digweed GUs, its probably this or Hong Kong that have probably aged most badly, though if you are one of the many that has a real passion for that chapter in time in Digweed's career, am sure its a timeless album.

I think Apollo Vibes is without question one of the best openers he's put on a mix cd, though perhaps just behind the combination of Lonely Planet and Dust on MMII

Re: Gu019

Here's a little story about this CD...

I went to this class (for a few days) and just happened to bring this CD with me. My coworker was there as well and we were back at the hotel playing cards and getting stoned. He's listened to some EDM but wasn't a huge fan. So while were playing cards I popped CD 1 in and he never said a single word during the whole time the CD was playing. The guy was totally lost! That next week he strolls into work with the CD in his hands.

Awesome!

Sydney is the one i go back to regularily!

LA and Sydney are both excellent in their own ways! have to admit that i find Hong Kong more purist and LA more commercial!

Re: Gu019

I truly believe that GU019 as well as Communicate define in the best possible way the genre of Progressive House music. Excellent programming, excellent mixing, excellent track selection and the best deep 'n dark emotional vibes that have ever been delivered to my ears.

GU019 has always been a true Aural Pleasure for me.

Finally ...

Photek's Mine to give and Groove is in the air by Tijuana is the best mixing of tracks I have ever heard in my life.

Truly a compilation worth a lifetime

The mix was based on a gig at Giant in LA, or are Giant and Mayan the same place ?

Re: Gu019

This is by far one my favorites.

Vinkalmann made a brilliant mix inspired by Gu019; it's prob one of the best mixes i've ever heard.

edit: Dhar, Kinetic, check your PM boxes.

Wow, that guy´s from the Ableton board, he does some excellent stuff, where can I get that?

Re: Gu019

Amazing mix, although I agree with The One that it sounds a bit stuck to it's time when listened to now.

But I don't think any mix has had as much influence since on the sound as this did in 2001. I kept hearing tracks from this cd at clubs for the rest of the year. If I remember correctly this came out in February.

Re: Gu019

One of my fave GU's, but then again I'm more of a fan of the darker stuff. I still play Paranoize to this day and get a ridic reaction to it. Might need to make an edit of that one someday...
So are Giant and Mayan the same place ?
No they are not the same place...

I remember being told the gu mix was from a recorded set from the Mayan by a reputable friend but it very well may have been based off a set from Giant instead, interesting to know which.

Re: Gu019
I'd say out of all the Digweed GUs, its probably this or Hong Kong that have probably aged most badly,
I thought about that as well but it's difficult. For me, GU19 changed the sound drastically. If you looked at the GU catalog as an indication of anything, nothing sounded like GU19 until Digweed dropped that mix. And after, everyone jumped onto that bandwagon. It pushed the genre (or maybe it was headed this way and Digweed just picked up on it sooner) into creating productions that were a lot sparser, less melody-driven, more twisted, and generally productions that were less musical, more groove-driven and better use of aural space.

It only aged because everyone was doing it, and everyone was flogging it like a dead horse, over exposure plain and simple.
Sydney is the one i go back to regularily!

LA was hardly commercial when it came out.

Re: Gu019

I don't go back to this as much. The thing that pisses me off about the cd is the recording quality of the mix. I love Sydney and Hong Kong better the LA. It has good tracks, it just the quality of the recorded master cd is low.
