Re: Gu019
Not only one of the best albums of the genre but I'd put it up there with Dark Side of the Moon, OK Computer, the first Rage Against the Machine and Best of CCR as one of the greatest albums period.
So yeah, i still throw this one in every now and then.
Re: Gu019
i remember back when i first joined my there was a news clip going around with some rich-european-son-of-someone-famous or something doing lines off of the GU19 case. then he got arrested:lol:
I remember seeing a pic of this, not a video.
Re: Gu019
post pic!
Re: Gu019
No they are not the same place...
I remember being told the gu mix was from a recorded set from the Mayan by a reputable friend but it very well may have been based off a set from Giant instead, interesting to know which.
I will go with the sleeve notes and the pictures.

What do they say giant or mayan? I would go with the sleeve notes too obviously :D
Re: Gu019
This mix got me into john digweed, progressive house, and subsequently Bedrock.
Big Up GU019
Same for me! That and NE3 as well! I wouldn't trade my GU019 even if my life depended on it.
I thought about that as well but it's difficult. For me, GU19 changed the sound drastically. If you looked at the GU catalog as an indication of anything, nothing sounded like GU19 until Digweed dropped that mix. And after, everyone jumped onto that bandwagon. It pushed the genre (or maybe it was headed this way and Digweed just picked up on it sooner) into creating productions that were a lot sparser, less melody-driven, more twisted, and generally productions that were less musical, more groove-driven and better use of aural space.
Well said!
Re: Gu019
I truly believe that GU019 as well as Communicate define in the best possible way the genre of Progressive House music. Excellent programming, excellent mixing, excellent track selection and the best deep 'n dark emotional vibes that have ever been delivered to my ears.
GU019 has always been a true Aural Pleasure for me.
Finally ...
Photek's Mine to give and Groove is in the air by Tijuana is the best mixing of tracks I have ever heard in my life.
Truly a compilation worth a lifetime
agree 100%. i swear when i first got this compilation i listened to tracks 7/8/9 so many times just wondering how the f he pulled this off... just sublime.
easily one of the best GU's ever.
agree with Communicate also... i was new to the scene and bought Communicate (and Northern Expose: Expeditions) because i heard sasha and digweed were good... this was back in early 2000. i listened to these compilations once each and put them away... was not my cup of tea. around 2 years later after progressing from Oakenfold Trance into more housey stuff, i popped them in again and those 2 compilations are Still, to this day, the best CD's I have ever heard... happy to say they will never leave my collection, ever.
Re: Gu019
I'll throw in my highest praise of GU19 - the only GU I still listen to.
Driving down the 10 heading west after a mayan show with a nice herbal buzz on listening to the opening of disc one...Wow.
Pardon me while I relish this memory.

Re: Gu019
Killer. enuff said.
Re: Gu019
i still listen to this regularly, and because of this thread and my thread re: prog trax with vocals, I popped this yesterday, and yeah, amongst the top 3 GU´s of all time.
I do admit there was a point in time that I was fairly tired of it, but that´s because everyone was ripping this off, never doing it as well as Diggers did it though.
Over here people still badmouth this style a lot, what with all the "here comes the darkness... feel the drums" shtick that followed, but to me this is one of the high points in the history of house music.

Its says it was Liquified at Mayan. They just mention Giant in the opening sleeve notes

go on then list them!
Re: Gu019
You can't get down to 3 because GU009, GU013, GU014 and GU019 are all sublime. Which do you kick out the perfection of San Fran/Hong Kong, or the unique vibe of Ibiza/LA ?
Re: Gu019
between the four!
Wrong!
GU006 GU009 GU010
its tur that GU013 and GU019 are something special. but the others are better in a different way! rawer! non lo so! speciale!!!!!!
Re: Gu019
Well, to be honest, these two :
GU019 GU013
Stand towering above all others, precisely because of their uniqueness, time defining style, and special vibe.
Then comes GU009, still a monumental comp for the way it´s built and mixed and the sheer ammount of classic tracks.
But yeah, I´d be more precise if I had said top 2, I mean the ammount of times I have played and still play LA and Ibiza goes into the thousands and thousands.
Re: Gu019
GU06 (track selection / energy- I don't even know how to describe it, the energy in CD1, those tracks keep building on each other but it never gets banging, fucking sublime, until you hear Air comes in and it releases all the tension / classics)
GU19 (madness / changed the genre)
GU14-GU13 (14-deep and chuggy, LSG - Into Deep ->Sphere - Gravi Tech :shock::twisted: / 13 - fucking smooth, MY LEXICON :RockOn:)
GU24 (changed the GU catalogue, Vector- Rise )
GU28-GU35 (fucker can't mix for nuts but can't fault those track selection)
GU07 (don't remember why, nostalgia)
GU04 (don't remember either, nostalgia!)
GU03 (my very first GU, hearing Nalin & Kane - Beachball for the first time, hanging around outside the car under the lights in a carpark :RockOn:)
That's my ranking.
Re: Gu019
Man GU007 was the mutts aswell!
back when oakie wasnt a ponnce!!!
GU07 (don't remember why, nostalgia)
Because - The Taste Experience "Summersault" is one of the best tracks ever made .. it perfectly captures the Balaeric vibe and is the one track that would have made GU013 even better !
Re: Gu019
John's trademark programming skills really came out on GU 19, well thoughtout transitions from track to track. I am probably not the only one who owns most of those tracks on records. It's that heavy sound we have been chasing since early 2000. Musica, Groove is in the Air, 1-800-Ming, Carnival XIII, The Energy, and My Release, not a stale track in the bunch.

I have all the 12"s from the first CD... I never got the 12" of Carnival XIII because it is rarer than hen's teeth. :D
Re: Gu019
GU19 has its moments, but it also has some tracks that I just wasn't into that much. The Salt Tank track at the end of disc 2 isn't that great, and I literally cannot stand that Cass track at all. Same goes with Klinkenberg and DJ Gogo.
On disc 1 it was well programmed and mixed but it sounds quite stale today.
BUT - Apollo Vibes, Medway, Bipath and Tijuana are all quality
Re: Gu019
Last track of disc one sucks.
Re: Gu019
Last track of disc one sucks.
1-800 Ming (Rui Da Silva Remix)
Really? Not your cup of tea I guess.
Re: Gu019
Last track of disc one sucks.
It appeared on Digweed's original Renaissance demo from 92. I guess it means more to him. Its a Brothers In Rhythm track
Re: Gu019
The original might be good but the Rui Da Silva-remix is just noise.
Re: Gu019
^ Yep and is far too long as well.
Re: Gu019
complete head fuck in the club tho!
Re: Gu019
^^^ AGREED! I like the track, darkly epic and twisted.
Re: Gu019
I remember giving my philosophy teacher a copy of this. I'm pretty sure he'd never heard any electronic music before. I was pretty naive at the time, as I was convinced this Digweed mix would change his way of looking at music hahaha
Thanks for the reminder...I'm going to listen to GU19 again. It's been a while!
Re: Gu019
My absolute favourite GU. This still gets pretty regular rotation every few months.
Re: Gu019
so reading this thread made me bust this out at the gym (its been longer than it should have since i've listened to this...several months at least). fuck i love it. disc 2 had me running like a madman on the treadmill
Re: Gu019
I think this is going to have to make an appearance later..
Looooove in Traaaaffiiiiiicccccc :)
Re: Gu019
dayfornight, thats a fuk'n great idea, putting it on my ipod now. There is def a motivational and kind of dark vibe together on this album imo.
