Wow, that's horrible chunky :( Hopefully after this stretch, things go back to normal for you.....have you thought of looking for somewhere else to work?

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

yeah, best advice would be to start showing up early, working a bit late, and asking for more work simply to show that youare vital to your company. if you and another employee can do the same quality, you better do it in 4 days and let your boss know that you are ready for more. cuz if u dont, ur so worker will and if they earn more for the company per time period, they will be the one to keep.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

My performance is in the top 40% of the company. I put the work in to get my performance where I wanted it to be, which is way I'm annoyed about not getting the bonus and pay rise. I will have to look for work elsewhere for the short term. I'm in a final salary pension scheme at work so if I leave it will affect my pay out when I retire. Most company's in the UK scraped final salary pensions a few years back, so hardly any company's offer them any more.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

i have not been laid off and hopefully wont be anytime soon, but i work off commission and needless to say sales are down. between my ex-wife, who will soon be taking me back to court because she did get laid off and expects me to pay for her lack of income and lack of sales due to economic troubles where my stores are based, i'm making less than half of what i was 6 months ago. still gainfully employed but having to bust my ass to make change compared what i was making. sucks.

That sucks ... can you get any chef work in the interim to bolster your pocket with the other 50% ?

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

i thank my lucky stars i got on with the company i did when i did (about a year ago). they're extremely financially stable (having billions in cash on hand). i've been putting in 12-14 hour days lately, so no shortage of work either. i havent complained about it once, and i dont get overtime. shitload better than the alternative...

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

yea I just went full-time...except that:

a) My pay probably won't go up (if it does, it'll be minuscule anyway..and it's @ 9.25/hour if you're wondering)

b) I can't be as flexible anymore in taking days off i.e. it's going to take 3-6 months minimum to now start accruing sick time, etc.

c) I don't need the health care benefits anymore...the one I'm on is far cheaper and the coverage is just as good

d) I was supposed to try and get off of weekends, now just on the night shift instead because we're about as minimally staffed as can be, short of getting near-constant OT (people left last month)

Yep. Great system we're in. Self business, here I come!

its the norm in the corporate finance industry. you get bonuses that are performance based. right now my bonus is relatively small. once i've been on a couple more years, the bonuses start to more than make up for the OT. but in the meantime, i'm the bitch. gotta prove i wanna be there...

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

I just got the news today that I'm being given a 30-day notice before I'm laid off. My last day is in February. Management wants me and others out of here, but want us to help them through a busy time.

I work in theI'm hoping I bounce back into something comparable or even better.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

I got the boot last Thursday, 60 days severance though. I got lucky, the state of Minnesota will pay for my school and I don't have to look for a job while collecting unemployment.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

sorry to hear that, guys. I'm still hanging in there for now...should be ok for the next few months, but with things going the way they are these days there is a lot of uncertainty in my industry... so I'm still saving up as fast as I can and looking around for other jobs (which is anything but easy...)

Wow, this is brutal....so many people losing their jobs :(

I hope those of you that have lost your jobs or will be losing them shortly find something quickly....I know times are getting rough, but hang in there!

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

i did IT work for a company here in new york city for 17 1/2 years & got laid off in august. i got 26 weeks severance pay which is now gone. i recently had to cash in my retirement money way to early so that i have money to live on.

it is very hard to find work right now here in new york. i really don't know what will happen when my retirement money runs out.

waking up in the morning & having no job to go to after over 17 years really sucks. big time.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Nice to see Northern Rock employees get a £2000 bonus for hitting their targets. I hit my targets at work and will not receive a penny of my bonus or the pay rise I'm due for my performance. Seems Terms and Conditions Contracts aren't worth shit these days.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

damn so sorry guys. hadn't seen this thread in a minute...

my advice (ive been laid off twice in the last 6 years). its all about your attitude and motivation. keep at it. keep your head up. i know things seem bad now but its not forever. every job i got laid off from, the next was better. i had to go into retail (for the 1st time ever ironically) for 6 months to survive but i did.
yeah, best advice would be to start showing up early, working a bit late, and asking for more work simply to show that youare vital to your company. if you and another employee can do the same quality, you better do it in 4 days and let your boss know that you are ready for more. cuz if u dont, ur so worker will and if they earn more for the company per time period, they will be the one to keep.
this has been my strategy since I became a manager. i try to beat everyone in the my dept in EVERY morning. i keep score and i dont like losing. work through lunch everyday. schedule any appt. that can be outside of working hours. basically dont leave the office. so far its worked for me, survived 6 rounds of layoffs. who knows though...

good luck and karma to all right now!

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Well, since me the wife and my dad own a couple of businesses i always thought that i would never have that problem with being laid off, well, i guess i was wrong, the business i run with my dad has to do with Import and Exports between the US and Mexico, mostly machinery and cars, well, its seems the Mexican government has given us the finger, since some years ago Mexico, Canada and the US worked on the Free Trade agreement, well, to make a long story short, Mexico just shut down the agreement manily on our branch of business, so since the last days of December all Auto and Machinery exports have been shut down, so practically were out of jobs until the Mexican government finds a solution to their stupid new laws.

So for now, me and my dad have been without a job since December and im practically living off of my wife's little beauty shop and of what i get on dj gigs, i really cant complaint since it hasnt been that bad lately, but still, if we go another month like this, then i think things are gonna start to get tight around here.

my neighborhood has been hit badly, a couple of years back, i really couldnt tell who my neighbors were, because most of them were working all day, but lately everytime im go pick up my son from school i get to see more and more neighbors outside of their house, doing yard work or stuff like that, it seems quite a few of them have been layed off.

sad sad times we are in.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Just noticed this thread too. The economic conditions caught up to me as well.

I owned my own business for the past 5 years. Aside from rehabbing and selling 4 houses the past 5 years on the side, I also had a showroom and a kitchen design business. I would meet with contractors, consult on blueprints and then do the design work for kitchen layouts. Once that was completed, I then sold all the materials that went into the kitchen to the contractor or the end user. It was a pretty good business and I especially enjoyed the design work. Then yep...the housing market finally caught up to me and I had to shut down the business for good in October after several months of no jobs, and sold off most of the displays and materials and then leased the building. The last house i rehabbed for sale I lost money after my time was figued due to the housing prices falling drastically. So, without either of those two business ventures, I wrote up a resume based on my sales history and hit all job listing avenues. The last time I had an interview was in 1997 when i graduated from college, so needless to say I was a bit out of practice, but I took the "I can sell anything" attidude and ran with it. I was hired by a fantastic company in november and I am now working in medical sales again (a career I had for 6 years or so after college) fitting custom mobility solutions to patients with spinal cord injuries, muscular distrophy, cerebral palsy, alzheimers, paraplegia, etc. It's very rewarding to give these disadvantaged people part of their life back, give them some independence. I'm not only lucky to have a job in a recession proof industry and enjoy it, but being in this field has opened my eyes quite a bit to life in general. The entire experience from closing down my business and moving on to patient care has been incredibly eye opening on so many levels. I will be able to sit for my Assistive Technologies Practitioner exam in 6 months and I'm really excited to achieve that and learn more what I can do for these patients.

Life is funny sometimes, ya never know what kind of ball it's going to throw you. The best advice is to keep swinging.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Add me to the list. Axed today about an hour ago. It may only be temporary, but the company has little work left for anyone. No orders lately.

To sweeten things, one of my hard drives crashed over last weekend and I lost all my cattaneo, garcia, kintar & rex, nick warren, saeed & palash, way out west & jody wisternoff sets, a whole bunch of individual tracks, not to mention my resumes, important documents & such. Thought I had backed up the documents on my other drive, but no such luck. Drive crashed WHILE I WAS BACKING IT UP ON A BRAND NEW SEAGATE 1TB DRIVE. Arghhhhhhhhhh! I saved all my Satoshi sets at least.

Nevertheless, I am in good spirits. Gotta move ahead. I feel for all you guys out there looking for work too. I have some savings, but not a lot. :what

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Okaaaay! In about a week, my dotted line boss is going to call me and say one of three things: (1) stay where you are, (2) rotate to your next assignment, (3) pack your shit up and go home. It was originally supposed to be #2, but now I honestly have no idea which it will be. There is a fair probability that it will be #3. Given that my rotation was supposed to occur in one month, I'm taking that his silence is not a good sign. :)

It's going to be an interesting week.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Still looks ok this side of the world - been in my position for 3 years and like most have said have made myself indispensible. But saying that, have meeting with bosses tomorrow and our contract where i am goes out to tender tomorrow. Fortunately I have been offered the branch managers position if we lose it.

I'm in a leadership development rotation program, and they already fired the people at Corporate. I've been saving like crazy, too...bought a macbook earlier last year when things were still good, was going to get Traktor Scratch...decided to put that on hold for the near term.

And regarding some of the "indispensable" talk... It's great if you can do it, but if you work in many areas of analytics in a large corporation, it is pretty difficult to really be indispensable - especially after only having started work 6 months ago. I do a lot of work, but there are plenty of other bright people around me and top management can reorganize and merge entire departments and divisions as they see fit...so it is extremely hard to really be indispensable in this environment.
