Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Laid off right now.. hoping to be re-employed come Jan. Fing sucks though.

Also for all those people out there saying that in 18-24 months it might get better those are scary ass statements to me. Nobody knows what will happen in 3 weeks let alone 24 months. The only thing we are sure about is massive layoffs.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Something is a helluva a lot better than nothing when it comes to employment and nothing lights a fire under your feet like working somewhere that you are obviously over-qualified for. What I don't understand is the lack of action by people...i know of some people whose heads are too far up their asses to suck it up and go work somewhere they don't want to work necessarily while job hunting and networking. There are always opportunities out there for the right person, always.

The job I recently lost was a temporary position anyway (political campaign) but we expected to make it past the primaries and came up short. Before that I was working in commercial real estate which steadily fizzled out over the last year...Now I'm working in an industry I would never have thought I would be working in and the money is great right now...If you want to know more about it just PM me, I'd be happy to discuss it...

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

While I may not be TOO happy with my job because of the crappy pay, in the sense of service-type jobs, it IS a hell of a lot better than most out there.

Typically we don't have to layoff much, most just leave anyway  Couple were recently let go though, though I would believe one was fired more so then laid off.

Either way I personally am studying and educating myself to get more into the entrepreneurial side of things...say what you will, but these are the best times to seriously get something going and also take control of your life and situation.
the unemployed people I know are not willing to work anywhere that does not carry the same status as their old jobs did...
Well great.

My point is this:

 1. Don't assume that the entire world looks like "the people you know".

 2. Just like out in the real world, there are people who visit this forum and who post in this thread who are going through very difficult times - some with families, children, etc. And they're not necessarily all lazy and not trying to make a better life for themselves. And right now they're scared about how things will shake out.

Do you really have to come into this online conversation right now and be all gloating like "well look how fancy I am and how much money I'M making"? Was that really necessary for you?

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

already in our small town of Pensacola, 3 of the Top Tier restaurants have closed in 2 weeks. The local GE plant has laid people off and others have had to take a 20% pay cut with mandatory unpaid Holiday "vacation". At the largest engineering firm, under 2 year employee's were cut. under 5 year took also a 20% cut. Employee's over 10+ years over 60 were offered early retirement packages which included my uncle who worked their for 15 years. I heard UPS drivers now have to load their own trucks.

shit hasn't hit the fan yet.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

The architecture and construction industries have been hit hard across the nation. Almost every firm in Kansas City has laid off. My office was a staff of 12 just 6 weeks ago, now we are 7. It seems like 30% has been the industry standard for letting people go. Got this email form a buddy this morning-
So the hammer has dropped at my office and each of us here fall into 1 of the 3 following categories:

1. 10% pay cut, loss of a week’s worth of personal time, company will no longer pay for tests or professional memberships (7 people) 2. 10% pay cut for January, 50% (yes 50) pay cut for 4 months, loss of a week’s worth of personal time, company will no longer pay for tests or professional memberships (14 people). Not sure who would actually put up with this? 3. Laid off (6 people)

That said I am in category 1 but needless to say I am not confident in this situation at all. I want to put some feelers out to see if any your companies are looking for people. I know a majority of you guys have already lay-offs but please let me know if you hear of anything, anywhere.

Thanks and see you tomorrow!

**** ps Please try to keep this as confidential as possible.
This fucking blows. If our office doesnt pick up any new jobs early in the first quarter, my position may very well be at risk.

Best of luck to you all.

Cottaging is not a nice way to make money. Take a drop in pay and do something else instead:lol:

Wow that's intense....I am glad it isn't like that here in Ontario as of yet. I know some of our larger car plants (GM & Ford) have had some layoffs, but over the past 5yrs they have been doing that anyways.....hopefully they can come up with a plan to turn things around for all of you in the US that are being effected.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

Work in the U.S. oil industry and we're taking a huge hit atm. Revenue is way down with companies shutting down production in many areas due to the surplus in oil supply's and oil hovering around the 40 dollar per barrel mark.

We're also budgeted to increase revenues in '09 by 16% in a steadily retracting market. We're 84% over budget for indirect labor costs and have become horribly inefficient due to a period of rapid growth, imho to the point of overextending ourselves.

The company I work for seems optimistic, but we've taken a beating the last 2 quarters of this year due to loss of revenue from hurricanes and the drastic slow down in the economy.

Unfortunately there is nothing I can do at the moment in my position to make myself indispensable. They've actually recently hired 2 people for less pay that they've been shifting my duties over too. It's pretty iffy at this point but it will be one of two things come January - a cut in pay or a layoff.

Trying to shore up my resume at the moment and regardless of what I find out come Jan start pushing ahead for something new. I really don't have much faith in my job right now.

I know what everyone is going through, best wishes to all and good luck weathering the storm.

Worse comes to worse I'm filing for bankruptcy and moving back in with my parents for a while.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

People really need to get a grip on things and start taking control of their own lives. It continues to amaze me how many live paycheck to paycheck and only rely on that one main source of income coming in, rather then try to find ways to make a bit extra on the side, or setup something that will allow it. Or make yourself indispensable if you can...it'll at least increase your chances of staying secure with things.

Don't let your future be controlled by some suit far away, or what have you. Job security is nonexistent no matter how good or rough things are.

That being said, even on my end where I work (television), our company & its stock have gotten hammered. While I and a few others got re-classified into full-time, the pay probably won't project such...but it was done partly because of the ridiculous turnover that kept happening. Layoffs happen a bit at times, but haven't really gone nuts in quite some time. Even still, our manager is going to start biting soon and threatening even the long-term full timers, because I think even HIS job is technically on the line...and he's been in the industry for like 20+ years.

On the other side, my brother-in-law is in construction in Florida...site manager...his company just dumped some dead weight recently as well.

Right now, I'm absolutely busting to get something going personally, that I can be in relative control of, that can make me the money I desire, and can help start up new streams along the way...so barring Armageddon, I don't have to worry about this crap of "how bad it is out there..."

Some of the Alt-A loans were apparently part of the subprime mess, so it's not totally "separate." That being said, it still is going to get rough, as the 2004 ARM loans reset after hitting the 5-year point next year, and the last peaks from '06 reset after 3. Pretty good segment either way.

Banks are literally so swamped with this shit, that it's effectively selective prosecution...you may get foreclosed, but they may not throw you out right away. You may face it, but an auction may not be held due to the paperwork shuffle. Lenders will work a forbearance out, or say no. Or they'll say this, or that, or something else, or change their mind the next day. Lenders will package and sell homes to each other like they do paper debts.

Another underlying problem I'm seeing is this: with home values still projected to decline upwards of 10% in areas, I use a comps service that allows me to see what's sold in the area of a target home I select (as I shop around for investment opportunities). This service is unique because it shows the mortgages obtained on said home sales (after all, homes still need to be bought & sold and they are). Many sales are still having mortgages taken out that are at least 90, 95, 97% (FHA loans allows 3% down) plus percent of the value. Won't take much of a drop where you suddenly have no equity, or are underwater.

1 out of 10 mortgages right now have at least missed payments. Half of all the modified loans are back in default again. People are either really getting swindled out there, or the stupidity of overbuying/can't afford the home is absolutely out of control. And yes job losses count too...few more months at the present rate we're seeing will effectively wipe out all the job gains of the past 3-4+ years.

That basically the problem with my fellow employees. They live month to month, get themselves neck high in debt and don't save anything. As a result the company has forced really aggressive annualized hours on us. Forcing us to be in debt to them to the tune of up to 5 months salary which we have to pay back if we leave the company. People agreed to this just because they couldn't afford to be laid off for 2 months on 33% wages. They didn't even consider other ways of getting some money for 2 months. Morons

Good news here in the mean time: the largest industrial construction group in Belgium offered me a position as HSE manager. With a turnover of 1.6 billion euro in 2007 I think I've landed in a fairly stable company. Gonna tell my boss he can lick my nuts, brb

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

still with my company for now, but another 1,000 jobs to be cut in January. For those of you who feel secure in your jobs right now, I have only one piece of advice: be very careful. For the foreseeable future, I would be saving at least twice as much as you regularly do, because the ripple effects of entire industries going down in 2009 can have all kinds of effects on your employment that you don't even recognize right now.

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

I've been told today that I'm being laid off for another 2 months on 50% pay that's 4 months in total. I will not get my merit pay which I put a lot of effort into earning in the last 12 months. There will be no pay rise and they are not paying me my performance pay. They gave the bankers their bonuses but I'm not getting mine. Fucking sucks.
