If you've heard it, you gotta give a little more than that to work with.
I've only heard cd1, and 10-15 mins of cd2... as, we needed to get a taxi to watch him play at the Balance cd launch on Friday night ( http://www.residentadvisor.net/images/events/flyer/2009/au-0206-80837-front.jpg ). Which, in itself was an absolutely unbelievable gig. I haven't had the time to sit down and listen to the rest.

It's a bit hard to review it as I heard it a few days ago and I don't want to comment on tracks because, it's a little hard. But, the seamlessness between each track, the layering, the groove and the general fresh sound makes it one of the most creative albums I've heard in.... well, years. At first, I was abit apprehensive thinking it would "sound" like too many tracks jammed together. But, in all honestly it doesn't have that feel at all. At first listen, without seeing the tracklist you would be hard pressed to believe it would extend past 20 tracks. On top of all that though, and putting aside the mixing/programming effort and creativeness, the sound of the album and groove is amazing. Cd2 certainly sounded more "driving/banging" but we'll see after a proper listen.

In short - get it.

My copy arrived in the mail today and my god it's amazing. Going to have to listen to it again a couple of times this evening with some good headphones to really get a feel for what's going on in here. I've had a few moments already where it's sent shivers down my spine.

It's that good!

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

Balance CD's are always top notch and I love Joris Voorn's work but I was very skeptical due to the 100 track thing. After listening to disc 1 and just at the halfway point to disc 2 I am completely blown away by how good this is. Going to take a few more listens but pretty sure this is a classic in the making.

Exactly ! Balance 014 is a masterpiece, pure and simple, deep and true ...

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

Part way through CD1 - deep and trippy !

I have to say the tracks blend and are seemless. There's a real flow, which is an achievement in itself given the sheer number of productions that make up this release.

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

Well he would've made edits of those tracks and layered them on a computer ...
Well he would've made edits of those tracks and layered them on a computer ...
Yeh ... but you still have to make mix progress, reach resolutions and take a journey + the still music needs to make sense and not be cluttered/full of annoying snippets.

#1165054Post 93 of 158

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

True that, he didn't go overboard and turned it into some gratuitious display of edits and shit.

25 mins into CD 1 ... it's captivating. Lush, atmospheric, deep, groovy, eclectic sounds. Smooth progression ... 26 mins and it's gotten tougher. Personally not a fan of percussion but can't really fault that. Definitely interesting. Would've been awesome if this was mastered in 5.1 like Hawtin's Transitions and you had a home theater to listen with.

32 mins wtf is this track?

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

Alright I will be the first to go against popular opinon here.

I think both CDs are excellent.

BUT.

They're two separate CDs for saparate listening to me, each to be enjoyed on its own.

What's the point of having a 2 CD mix if you build it up in CD 1 and totally loses the groove and energy in CD 2? I'm having trouble getting my head or ears around that. I thought the point of having a 2 CD mix is to, I don't know, build a journey. CD 1 was a journey in itself and left me wanting for more, and then CD 2 flatlined it for me.

But if I had heard each mix separately, they would rock in their own right. It felt like it made more sense to start off with CD 2 and then continued with CD 1 even.

Alright feel free to rape me now.

But feather this is not a classic cd1 & cd2 compilation, each ( Mizuiro & Midori ) mix is story ( sound painting ) of his own and it really doesn't matter what is so-called cd1 or cd2

#1165194Post 105 of 158

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

Alright I can deal with that, but if that's the case I just can't think of it as a 2-CD comp, they're just separate mixes for me. I would've enjoyed it more if he kept it going after CD 1.

Do you think you´ve heard the same Disk as we did?
It felt like it made more sense to start off with CD 2 and then continued with CD 1 even.
Thought exactly the same. I wish the second CD would be more driving. He could have mindfucked us all  But this leaves Space for a Balance 014.1, seems to be a common thing now (assuming Chris Fortier is doing his Balance 07.1)

Nevertheless this album is exceptional. It´s brilliant. A mixture of Lee Burridge and Jimmy van M.

Cheers, G.

Look I completely understand your way of thinking, but ask yourself for just a second why ??! Practically everyone else make his own compilation with this warm up cd1 then driving mindfucked cd2 method, and IMHO that's a little bit boring and predictable. Joris Voorn go further and make a pure masterpiece built-up from 102 tracks in two separate sound painting, and each mix tells his own beautiful story... This Isn't just an ordinary GU099 Timbuktu or GU101 North Pole compilation... Balance 014 is something different, it's a piece of art

I had shivers going up and down my spine several times listening to this.

Dude, I´ve already mentioned
It´s brilliant
But playing this kind of music on CD1 and make one begging for more and end up with this CD2 ist like, umm.... showing a dog a bone and then take it away

Anyway, enjoy the album 8)

I know bro. I didn't mean that to be a rude statement either. I would just hate to see dim sales like Bedrock 10 on such a good album.

Re: Balance 014 Mixed by Joris Voorn - Tracklist

EVERY few years a dance music CD comes along that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

This year, it is Balance 014 by Dutch deep techno DJ and producer Joris Voorn.

Not content to simply blend a dozen intros over outros, Voorn has woven bits and pieces of 102 songs into a two disc set.

Some are full songs.

Others are just a couple of bars or a snippet of a breakdown.

That he avoids it sounding disjointed and that it is so damn smooth, is a credit to his talent.

Voorn has taken conventional DJ mix techniques and thrown them overboard, much like Richie Hawtin did four years ago with DE:9 Transitions.

In a digital age where music technology is more accessible than ever, it is a surprise that this sort of undertaking does not happen more often.

The first disc is for Voorn’s techno fans.

It is the up-tempo sister, stark and relentless until a surprise shift from building intensity to ambient tunes, in the back end.

It is an after-dark CD, gritty and pounding.

Disc two lets it all hang out.

This is where Voorn gets loose and weird.

The pace is slower but the music is 100 times more melodic and just a dash crazy.

A soundtrack to the sun coming up after a night on the dance floor.

5 Stars
