taken from an interview with deadmau5 and it was an interview he gave to one of our national news papers the irish daily star and it goes as follows

red hot canadian producer deadmau5 hits Irish shores this weekend but local dj's better keep out of his way.

the five times beatport award winner told club mix in an explosive interview that he HATES dj's and think they're all fucking cunts. deadmau5 pronounced dead mouse said he will only perform live shows of his own music and think dj's should be extinct. he says it puts me to fucking sleep to be quite honest, i don't really see the technical merit in playing two songs at the same speed together and it bores me to fucking tears and hopefully with all due respect to the dj type that will fucking go the way of the dinosaur id like them to disafuckingpear. joel continued, its so middle man, they're like fucking lawyers you need them, but they're fucking cunts. god bless them they're my number one customer right so im not gonna go dis every fucking dj.but to say you become this massive up on a podium performer by playing other peoples productions at the same speed as someone else's productions and fading between the two of them, i don't get it.

Doesn't look like i'm going to be purchasing any of his songs anymore. Not that I ever bought one...I think maybe one.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

if this is real then man I am hurt :(

i have purchased many of his productions and believe he is an amazing artist...but to say things such as these...wow. not sure what to say.

well i hate that dude's gay-ass fuckin' mousehead and little red suit. even if he thinks that, he should know better than to say it

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

^^^ but did he really say it???
why the eye roll?
probably a little premature. Let's see what happens !!:) Actually while I was typing that it started to go the way I thought it would

For the record. I've liked some of his work. Saw him Dj and he was good if not great and seemed like a nice guy.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

at the end of the day good or bad person, you dont fuck with your "customers" because this is how you went all that way up to the top! hes not my favorite producer either (ive got like 3 of his tunes, which i never played tho..), but hes still on some djs top 5 list. i just wonder how this interview is going to fuck with his popularity now.. if this is really true i can see a downfall coming!

#1110670Post 8 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

he can't be considered an amazing artist...an artist void of all creativity maybe....just maybe.

#1110673Post 9 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

Apparently the local DJ's found him that night:

no, not an amazing artist, but there was a period about a year ago when everybody was talking about this new hot producer from Canada and every top dj was spinning his tunes! hes not that popular now anyway

#1110678Post 11 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

i believe this is true. i guess he doesn't think to highly of "djs". forgetting the fact that they are the sole fucking reason he is where he is today. i wont be purchasing anymore of his tracks and karma's a mofo.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

that's ironic because last night, I decided that I would never go see a dj or producer who used only laptops in thier shows; sasha included.

88Mariner, I thought Diggers was looking at adding laptops to his set-up in 2009 ... you may be burning a few bridges with your decision.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

man, this exact thread has come up in so many places.

never liked his production and now i really couldn't care less.

and you who says laptops are bad for djing, get a clue! everyone is going to be on laptops within the next 10 years! if they aren't, they are probably gonna be a little bit outclassed.

I think I'm almost with you on this. I saw Steve Lawler this week and he used nothing but Tractor. While the music was amazing, something is just missing when every mix is "perfect" without some type of organic transition. Plus the fact all night he kind of had that look on his face of a first time Windows user trying to add a printer or something, didnt exactly look comfortable.

The first time this feeling hit me was when I saw Sasha a few years ago and instead spent almost all my time that night in the basement cutting a rug to Lee Burridge. There use to be a fine distinction between the DJ and the live PA but now laptops are taking something away from the DJ experience, at least for me. I was also put off by CD decks when they first came around because then I couldnt catch a glimpse of a label or get a heart flutter at the site of a white label. The old days, when you had to find a copy of that record before it sold out. It's just evolution for things to get easier but sad to see some of it go.

Would Deadmau5 really offend his entire customer base? Must of have been smocking crack if he really did say that but being that the only source of information on this is internet message boards my bet is on hoax.

look, ever since sasha started using maven and abelton, the magic of his sets have died. there's no emotion, there's no connection with the crowds anymore. no tension with picking the next track, no laser-beam concentration on dropping the cue at the right moment. it's simply point and click, drag, ad infinitum. just because you're a master at beatmatching doesn't relieve one from putting on an intense show. Sasha may like the idea that he's putting together a unique 'symphony of sounds', but sympthonies are snooze-fests. people once took drugs to let loose; I would have to take drugs just to get into one of his sets.

I don't know if the blame rests mostly on sasha, or on the tracks/producers he's picking, but his 'presence' (whatever that means nowadays) behind the laptop makes him really detached from the audience. it's one thing to be a live PA and twiddling nobs and punching keys on all sorts of equipment, but laptops make the dj detatched from the musical experience. I posed a question about this out in another thread that asked the question, "what happened to building sets and mixing in key anymore?" Laptops would surely be a great way to make any night out with sasha sound like GU: San Fran or Ibiza or whatever.... i mean, with the tools right there, how could he NOT sound like the most amazing thing you've ever heard? to the contrary, what I've seen and heard is more like somone making a mix that you hear on the radio during friday nights. what should have improved things actually made it a bit worse. sasha still possesses great musical talent, and he does play tons of great tracks; thus I think the laptop is to blame.

The only person I've seen really connect with a crowd AND use laptops is James Zabeila, but you know what? he's also fucking around on cd-players and effects boxes etc...sasha doesn't even do that. And I dont' think diggers would, either. I'll wait and see myself, but honestly, the full frequency of the dirty, twisted, and raw sound diggers used to play will be diluted significantly. it would be an utter travesty if he ditched cd's altogether for a usb drive and a mou5e.

So, Imagine, for a moment, that pink floyd was up on stage, but instead of playing thier instruments, they had a drum machine, ableton, a mixer and an effects box, yeah, it sounds the same...but....there's no connection with the crowds. it sounds like pink floyd, but the distinction is clear; a total digital format played solely through computers is killing (at least for me) the total experience of a set. would you honestly say that the 'new' pink floyd still rocks? probably not. What about the london symphony orchestra playing each instrument on a single track connected through to the conductor who was simply layering them on the screen on the podium? They're already masters at thier craft so why bother still playing live with instruments when simply playing with a midi-sequenceer would suffice? Yeah, still, sounding the same but that human element is gone.

video killed the radio star. laptops killed the dj.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

the laptop is a tool, nothing more. it sucks no souls and it does not make things sound worse. (well, depending on the artist's interface)

sasha's problem has nothing to do with his laptop.

ableton/traktor will do more for djing than two decks and a mixer could ever hope to accomplish. when its all said and done, we won't have djs anymore, we'll have composers. composers who use pre fabricated music to create live musical experiences. it will be more than djing. Im sure djing will exist in some form, but im pretty sure the big guys will all end up being called composers.

Well this topic did spur some interesting banter. I still don't believe this and I still maintain he is damn good producer. the takeover of laptop djing is inevitable, but those that think outside of the box and find their own way will be the jocks who stick around for the long haul.

less is better when more is too much. the scene existed for well over 12 years before people started to take cd's into thier set, and only in the last 4 when laptops were being introduced. are you suggesting the experience now with laptops is superior to the years before simply because you can tweak a few sounds and such? reallllly? has it gotten so bad that laptop gimmickry is necessary for a good set?

why do you need to accomplish more? why isn't playing tracks just as they are good enough?

This hasn't gone as badly as other forums which says good things about MS:D For some reason Deadmau5 has become a public whipping boy, and horror of horrors he has had the nerve to defend himself on occasion. Which is why I have quite a lot of respect for him, and he comes on as himself against all those brave little men hiding behind user names. Every forum seems to have a Deadmau5 hate thread !!

It's just ridiculous !! The first one that came up was "all sounding the same" line, Eric Pryda anyone ?? Quite a lot of really good produces have a signature sound!! Next, how would you like it if as a producer you had someone coming after you at your gigs parodying your work ?? Yet Deadmau5 was seen as the bad guy for objecting [after months of being nice] when he had a no talent stalker doing the same to him. !!

Everyone screaming at him for supposedly ripping off the Clockwork Orange theme, FFS it was a 16th c funereal dirge.!!

We even had a really ridiculous one here, where some one put up a video of a skinny guy with hat leaping up onto a Dj stage and knocking all the equipment of the front ! It clearly said on the video who it was, [Not Deadmau5] and someone pointed this out straight way. But we still got all these posts saying what an idiot Deadmau5 is!!

Far from hating Djs the night I saw him he spent quite a bit of time chatting to our up and coming Djs.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

what a fool

if people began to share his view on djing he def wouldn't be making any money from his productions anymore!

he's entitled to his own opinion, but publicly saying something negative like that towards his largest customer base is always a BAD career move!

I think he should be far less concerned when this small group of random wannabe producers criticize him in online forums and more concerned with what goes on in real life. From various interviews I've seen & read with the man it seems like he takes this shit much more seriously than most other producers.

He seems very concerned about pleasing these random kids online and gaining their respect when he should be most concerned with pleasing the people who buy his tracks and who come and pack the dance floor every time he plays!

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

There are a couple +12 threads on tranceaddict on this topic. deadmau5 posted in one of them and apparently he was joking with the irish press when they asked him what he thought about "this dj and that dj...." .

...oh and on the whole digital laptop dj'ing versus the 2 decks and a mixer, im not sure if i will be maintaining my very old school stance for much longer. As opposed to what 88Mariner was arguing; that the laptop style removes the dj's crowd interaction, I had the exact opposite experience a couple of weeks ago when I threw down a set on a friend's tracktor settup at an afterparty and i actually felt like i was liberated in the sense that i could play tracks from totally different genres with ease and tell a unique story, whereas with my standard cdj's, that would have been next to impossible and not as smooth whilst drinking shots and taking photos in the booth with the ladies. I just see it now as a presentation. Alot if it could be pre-cued and yeah i guess its cheating in a way, but the presentation of the tracks you want to play in the set can be more clean and dramatic. It also allows you to party, without loosing your mix. Cause afterall its nice to be able to look away from the mixer for a bit and enjoy the party. I learned to mix the traditional way, but i can now see the digital remixing age is going to be good for the music, just the same way digital audio workstations ( like Pro Tools have actually liberated the artists/engineers) I think many of the dj's that have recently made the switch are just trying to re-invent themselves but may just be getting burnt out over the years and that may be the reason their sets are not what they used to be.

because. why WOULDN'T you want to do more? how can you seriously be content with playing one song after another and having to stand around while your 4 minute breakdown gives you nothing to mix with?

laptops liberate the DJ from the usual shortcomings of normal mixing. there are no limits and there is always an option.

its not a gimmick. if you're using a laptop you better be doing a LOT more than just tweaking a few sounds. thats why you have the laptop. i tweak a few sounds when i dj traditionally. i fucking devastate tracks when im playing on my laptop.

there is nothing wrong with the traditional dj setup. but there is also nothing wrong with wanting to provide a better musical experience for your listeners either.
