Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

yes, the optimal situation would be to use all the formats in one performance. also another thing im working on! :)

and i haven't lost any beatmatching skillz since switching to a laptop. its like riding a bike, only waaaaaaaaaaay easier.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

i think laptops, fx boxes etc all have their place and can all add to a performance (in moderation) but it seems ableton and the like are so advanced the pc is doin as much as the operator . I've hooked up my kaoss pad before to play live but found it a distraction in the end - yeah you can make some fucked up sounds and warp your tunes beyond recognition but are you really improving them? If so then get in the studio and cut your own versions and see how they sell. If not then accept that playing records is playing records and just do that.I like playing records - that's why i buy them strangely enough... I'd rather pay to hear sasha/digweed/hernan play a load of other people's tunes (whatever format) than deadmoo5e playing his live set but that's just me........... if he really said this then i think he's a cock - but i guess he probably didn't..

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's
I threw down a set on a friend's tracktor settup at an afterparty and i actually felt like i was liberated in the sense that i could play tracks from totally different genres with ease and tell a unique story, whereas with my standard cdj's, that would have been next to impossible and not as smooth whilst drinking shots and taking photos in the booth with the ladies. I just see it now as a presentation. Alot if it could be pre-cued and yeah i guess its cheating in a way, but the presentation of the tracks you want to play in the set can be more clean and dramatic. It also allows you to party, without loosing your mix. Cause afterall its nice to be able to look away from the mixer for a bit and enjoy the party. .
^^^exactly why it is completey freakin lame to use a laptop. what talent deost that take.....u might as well throw a prerecorded cd in your cd player mate...then u can party all you want LOFL

its a joke. any moron can dj now.. the true definition of a dj is going extinct with all this laptop garbage

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's
because. why WOULDN'T you want to do more? how can you seriously be content with playing one song after another and having to stand around while your 4 minute breakdown gives you nothing to mix with?

laptops liberate the DJ from the usual shortcomings of normal mixing. there are no limits and there is always an option.

its not a gimmick. if you're using a laptop you better be doing a LOT more than just tweaking a few sounds. thats why you have the laptop. i tweak a few sounds when i dj traditionally. i fucking devastate tracks when im playing on my laptop.

there is nothing wrong with the traditional dj setup. but there is also nothing wrong with wanting to provide a better musical experience for your listeners either.
so, what you're suggesting is, laptops liberate a dj from being a dj. incredible.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

using a laptop to dj is for lazy mofo that dont want to use there head, i guess it allows you to get more wacked out. LOL. very sad

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

I think that even if he was joking around. This is still something you should never say. I always kind of thought he was a joke with that stupid helmet, but he's going for a marketable ideal of a producer.

Now as for composers....I have always thought of myself as a composer. I'm not a Bob Rock who just tells other people how to play things and giving ideas. I actually compose and edit the tracks myself. So I am a composer first and producer/mixer second. But I don't think I would ever wanna play a set of only my stuff. I love this music too much to wanna cut myself off from all those other hard working composers who are making some amazing music.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

the measure of djing talent is not beatmatching. it is song selection, programming, and mixing.

honestly, there are already PLENTY of morons ALREADY djing by traditional means. not sure how a laptop enables morons to dj, i would think that it would ward them off cause they would have no idea what they are doing.

I've seen a surprising number of amateur people do it in a live setting.

Either that or they won't get their damn finger off the mouse button and just molest the shit out of some reverby effect until I have to punch them in the face.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

they can be used simplistically. doesn't mean its easy to set up or even understanding the concepts behind making computer music sound good...
they can be used simplistically. doesn't mean its easy to set up or even understanding the concepts behind making computer music sound good...
my point is that people should stop jizzing themselves just because it's a computer. A computer does not automatically mean "better". New technology is fine, but the quality of the creative performance always comes from the individual. I've seen people do more with a stack of vinyl and 1 hour of time than many noobs do with their macbooks and an infinite series of stolen mp3s.
Ahh, a voice of reason :D

This hasn't gone as badly as other forums which says good things about MS:D For some reason Deadmau5 has become a public whipping boy, and horror of horrors he has had the nerve to defend himself on occasion. Which is why I have quite a lot of respect for him, and he comes on as himself against all those brave little men hiding behind user names. Every forum seems to have a Deadmau5 hate thread !!
bows ;)

I agree....it never fails that when someone become successful they are attacked and ridiculed.....I think it goes with the territory. If you try to retaliate they just go after you more, and if you ignore it, you don't care enough....you can't win!

very true, there is nothing to get excited about. it is all about how the artist uses his tools. BUT, laptops provide infinite resources for such endeavors and should be utilized by everyone. imo of course.

i still don't get why people need to watch djs. I'd rather be dancing than booth monkey-ing.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

what ever happened to moving forward with this music?Thats the one thing about edm is its forward thinking.seems like the vinyl purists can't seem to get over the fact that this is the direction edm is heading.Using ableton, cdjs, traktor, traktor scratch,& serato. That equipment if used correctly should be used to enhance a set. When you have people using that equipment for soley djing it takes the purpose ouf of what Real dj's ie Richie Hawtin & Dubfire are trying to accomplish.

#1110972Post 56 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

it's not about vinyl purism, it's about being against laptop purism. people who solely use laptops (and i guess this doesn't include the use of traktor or serato) is what i'm (and othere here) against.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

what a fucking ego maniac. i saw him after burridge at this year's v-fest and HE bored me to fucking tears. totally sucked the energy out of the tent.

producing and spinning are two totally different things. if you can combine the two then you're unique. otherwise you're nothing special. and that's exactly what deadmau5 is.

#1110975Post 58 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

fanboy purism is dumb.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

if he said it and meant it he is a complete asshole, but either way it doesnt affect my life and how i go about what i do musically.. i think i have only ever played one of his songs, and its a daft punk remix he did anyway

and again, he performs in a fuckin red mouse suit, lol

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

why, wouldn't it give a dj a lot more creative and artistic flexibility and freedom if he could just put on a muzik mag mix cd and spend the balance of his set playing with different effects on the mixer? i mean, it's not about beatmatching....

just saying.

;)

#1111015Post 63 of 99

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

that would not emphasis track selection, programming or mixing.

there is more to djing than beatmatching my friend.

and yeah, lol peter hook

You know what? I used to think like you, but i came to the conclusion that the only reason i felt like laptop sets were cheating was because i had spent all these years teaching myself to mix on 1200's by ear and im not just talking beatmatching here, learning all the nuances of the music and how to eq and build sets, tricks etc, etc.... and i thought this abelton and traktor wave would make the art in general obsolete, but no i believe the stuff you can't teach any monkey like style and programming definitely make the dj. not the beatmatching, sorry. Style shines through and through and through.... fake instant dj clones sound like what they are. Real dj's make a unique experience of continous music regardless of the medium nowadays. I thought this digital revolution in dj'ing was awkward at first but now i have faith in it.

Re: Deadmau5 hates DJ's

In the end it depends on what kinda DJ you are, just like any other artisan or craftsman. Do you want to kick back and be a lazy ass, let your machine do all the work and press some buttons to layer on some effects, or do you really want to work it and push the music?

You have people like Sasha and other laptop DJs doing what they do, and you have people like Hawtin and Zabiela doing what they do. And they all use laptops but it's a world of a difference.

It's just a shame that Sasha is resting on his laurels and taking the easy way out. Sure he was 'one of the few' who took up Ableton 'cos he's so forward-thinking, but look at what he does now, probably gives him more time to do lines off the table.

And if you looked at the way Digweed plays and how long he's been pushing forward the music and how long it took him to move to CDR, I doubt if he'll just stand there and push buttons when he moves fully to laptop.

And I don't agree that having laptops let you do more. More of what?? DJs have been mixing on more than two decks for ages, making long transitions, playing one beat, layering on shit. Doesn't anyone remember techno? Now that's hard work behind the decks. How much more do you want to do with laptops before your set sounds like a cacophony instead of a symphony?

exactly right. its the lazy way out and lets them be more blitzed out of there minds.

digweed works the harderst behind the decks imo. hope he doesnt swithc to laptop. i willbe devistated

this kid is just digging himself an even bigger hole with these kind of statments, it just shows how naive and how far up his own arse he is, he really needs to stop mouthing off like he's gods gift to the world. Like anything there are many things that could be said to put him back in his place but he really needs to learn his own lessons, he will look back one day and realise how stupid he is being but fuck its funny to watch him shoot himself in the foot.

I think he's crap! Saw him live a while ago and I was told he has his tracks at a set bpm so he doesn't have to beatmatch, he just has to drop the first beat on the right time. Sounds like a talentless ass clown to me. F*ck you Deadmau5
