Re: Chicks Can't Mix
shiva, trust me....get yourself a linear fader xone 92 (i'm not a rotary fan, either) and a pioneer efx 1000 and you'll never go back.

the sound quality, layout, options...pretty much everything about the xone is better. just the ability to be able to mix pre-eq in the headphones is worth it...far, far easier to mix. the filters are also to die for. combined with the efx-1000, you can do everything you'd be able to do on a pioneer.
I like Allen & Heath. All I have is a Xone 464 though. :(
^ I was expecting the Nikky one... Ahhhh.

Ok then, lets turn this thread around:

There are some djanes that do it their way, and there are others that do it in another: musically!

So, here is a live mix @ Pasha Club [Romania] - Jan 2008 (the only live gig available at the moment). But before I continue let me put you in the picture of why don't consider this mix a top of my performance. The simple reason is that I am a Pioneer djane, I use only Pioneer (all series) coz its the only brand I feel as an extention of me when I play: special effects, tweaks, breaks etc etc. And for my surprise when I got to the club in Romania I had to play on a rotative mixer that had never seen before:

So I couldnt fully feel free to perform at my best, but the gig went fine nonetheless and here is the LIVE recording of it, 3hrs+ of tracks that I don't usually share in sets and play only live... Dark & Proggy of course! ;)

This is the pic of that night:

And these are the links: http://shivadeejay.com/media/live/shiva_live@pasha1.mp3 http://shivadeejay.com/media/live/shiva_live@pasha2.mp3

I hope you enjoy!

P.S.: Few cuts here and there from the recording process.

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Well ive also noticed some really nasty trainwrecks by many DJs judging by the genre is not valid imo.

Continuing with the topic. I saw this summer Tania Vulcano and she was playing with his boyfriend on the back (who is also a DJ) and he got his hand on the mixer a couple of times when something wasnt sounding quite right. Also she trainwrecked several times using serato/traktor scratch...

Ok.I gotta get into this here. I understand being on a new mixer and it feeling weird. But I too have always been a pioneer dj. But I was offered a chance to spin in Pittsburgh a while back and the mixer they had for the evening was a X-92. Now I had in my mind, pined over this mixer and it's glassy faders and 4 band eq, without ever touching one.

Well that night I had what I still believe was my best live set and the best Dj gig of my career so far. That mixer is the best fecking thing out there. And as for effects... I really didn't miss them with this baby.

And on the subject of bad Dj's. We can also throw in a couple of the top techno DJ's Mr. Atkins and Mr. May. Howells has had so many mixes that i've heard him mess up on, that I can't even listen to a set from him anymore.

I tell ya, if I ever went to see a big named DJ and they started to trainwreck, I would wait until they did it again. Then I would proceed to make my way to the DJ booth and ask the DJ if they need any advice on how to DJ properly without wrecking every track.

And to Chloe...you mentioned about some of these people who are Producers and not DJ's...but they are dj'ing anyways...to me that is NOT a worthy response, it's a cop-out to justify that they have not spent any real time trying to learn their craft, just as they did with their productions.

OK. I'm done.
Ok so think of your top 5 male dj's - I expect on the whole you'd think they were pretty sharp behind the decks and have a few favourite sets of theirs which are more ore less flawless...now think of your top 5 female dj's - can you say the same thing about them. I would say my favourite 5 female spinners are Ellen Allien, Magda, Smokin' Jo, Monika Kruse and Chloe - and with the notebale exception of Chloe all of the sets I've enjoyed from these gals both live and pre-recorded are poorly mixed.

In no way am i saying that there are no chicks who can mix - that would be ridiculously arrogant and unfair. I'm just sayingthat in my experience those that i have heard have been well below the male equivalent with comparable levels of experience and exposure.

If i'm missing a shitload of female talent (and I'm sure I am) please point me in it's direction...I' would genuinly like to be proved utterly wrong :)
Tnx for your comments Arielus... I am glad ur enjoying it ;) Although I dont consider this session as my best live gig mix....but more live gigs will be posted soon on [MS].

P.S.: I got few comments from ms members or fans saying they thought I was mixing using software, they would not listen to my sets because of that, so I would like to clarify this: I am a CDJ dj, since I first started djing till now I made approx 50 sets or so (I lost the count by now) which were ALL made LIVE on CDJs (pioneer) and not using ANY software whatsoever, except soundforge to record the sessions. I even use to have a kind of prejudice against software djs (CDJs Vs Software thing) But since I have to learn some software for production, I recently started exploring the mixing on software as well. ALL my sets ever made before "Preserve The Essence 006" were made on CDJs (on-the-fly), ONLY.

That's what I do with all my professional mixes. My promos that I hand out at clubs. I really enjoy it, and I can get to do edits of tracks, make them longer/shorter.

It's really nice for that kind of stuff...but I don't wanna do it live.

i'm not the best mixer...at least in ableton i can make the sucker sound good. Now if i got a regular gig, other than once or twice a year...i'd be better at my technique of Dj'ing. LOL.

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Agreed that I have listened to Anja S & Magda and the mixing can be poor but Pete `Tong is pretty bad as was Oakenfold and a few masiello sets ive heard.

Anja Schneider certainly hasnt got where she is solely being female. Great track selection, productions, LABEL, radio, club night.... In fact probably one of the most involved people in the scene...

#1060050Post 111 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Yeah she has definitely worked her ass off doing all that...just too bad she doesn't work half as hard to get her mixes tight. It doesn't take all that long.

Yeah Tong sucks at mixing. Same with Oakenbutt.

^ definetly...but hey, its not any female or female dj that opened any thread against any male dj.....as usual, it's the male attacking females....just like that other thread about women. And just like in the other thread, female djs will defend themselves, but this time with beats instead of words... ;)

#1061124Post 115 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Mistress Barbara, Magda, Chloe Harris, just to name a few great female DJ's. And most recently I listened to some Shiva sets, and she's definitely one of the top 5 djs on my list - male and female combined (musical taste and technical skill).

But I also see some of the other points made here in that its much more likely for a female dj to be booked "for her looks" than a male.
