Re: Chicks Can't Mix
^ I was expecting the Nikky one... Ahhhh.

Ok then, lets turn this thread around:

There are some djanes that do it their way, and there are others that do it in another: musically!

So, here is a live mix @ Pasha Club [Romania] - Jan 2008 (the only live gig available at the moment). But before I continue let me put you in the picture of why don't consider this mix a top of my performance. The simple reason is that I am a Pioneer djane, I use only Pioneer (all series) coz its the only brand I feel as an extention of me when I play: special effects, tweaks, breaks etc etc. And for my surprise when I got to the club in Romania I had to play on a rotative mixer that had never seen before:

So I couldnt fully feel free to perform at my best, but the gig went fine nonetheless and here is the LIVE recording of it, 3hrs+ of tracks that I don't usually share in sets and play only live... Dark & Proggy of course! ;)

This is the pic of that night:

And these are the links: http://shivadeejay.com/media/live/shiva_live@pasha1.mp3 http://shivadeejay.com/media/live/shiva_live@pasha2.mp3

I hope you enjoy!

P.S.: Few cuts here and there from the recording process.

(sorry modos for the links, got to defend ourselves!)
thanx da linx!

got the date and a t/l aswell seeing as its u! ;) :D

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

So what you are saying is you heard two djs who trainwrecked over a short space of time. Why bother differentiating on a gender basis?? Unfortunately it happens all the time and some of the biggest names do it !! I've heard Digweed trainwreck!!

Commenting on female Djs in general, the good ones tend to be great simply because looks only go so far. If they are good looking there will always be people who say they got there because of that. They are judged on their gender before their skills.

Btw Everyone knows producers have to learn to Dj :)

I don't fully agree with you Didi,I mean it might be true to some extent, but its not a rule. When I first started I personally had to face lots of criticism from male djs, my physical appearance was playing much against because of thoughts like that; and this one of the reasons why I am always dressed and show no skin whatsoever, simply to keep the focus on music and skills.

#1054394Post 55 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Also, I might add: Some djanes might have it easy in getting a gig when a local club/bar wants to make sensation: In these cases, most of the time the club owner surely doesnt invite the djane for her music, style and skills, but rather for her looks or appearance.....and my question is: how demanding is that audience in terms of music? But when it comes to "pro-clubs" (i.e. purely music oriented), I think no djane will have access to the booth, wether she is pretty or plays naked or whatever reasons other than music. If she is good in music & skills, they will surely contact her and appreciate her performance. The dj selection is this case is very though, and for a djane to compete with her counterpart male djs won't be an easy task.

As for me personally, I have had several offers to play in clubs/bars; But everytime that I would notice I was being hired for my looks rather than for my music, everytime I would feel and know that the venue owner doesn't know jack about music and he just wants to use my presence to make sensation in his club, I would simply refuse the gig, now matter how much it is paid. It is a question of principle and respect for my work and my music. Besides, the dark proggy is not a style that is easily understood by everybody or just to be played in any "commercial" place, it's NOT ELECTRO.. ;) Buttom line, why would I play for a crowd that might not appreciate the session?

Again, just like everything else in life, it depends on what kind of interpretation a djane/dj gives to his/her work and the way he/her manages it. In my case I deal with all that in a VERY strict manner coz I take music (djing/producing) very seriously, so I give it ALL the respect it deserves.

#1054405Post 59 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Hello Fellas , Its a nice thread and i'd like to be involved ... Sorry for being somehow "Long " but i have to :D:D

Female DJs are making it in a formerly man's world. But while it's no longer a novelty to see a woman on deck at a club, women still often feel pressured to prove they can spin, produce , cut and scratch as well as the guys. As female DJs have gotten their feet in the club door and their hands on the turntables, they continue to face many disadvantages. They have to proove themselves and often are paid less ! And to get a gig of consequence--to get known--it's still hard.Besides, "Men" Djs get lots of gigs and get well paid if they mix properly or not , just because they think that "ADAM" can conquer"EVE" even in the music industry !!! Nevertheless , Its not a matter of "ADAM" or "EVE" , a DJ or a DJ-ane ... Its not about wearing more makeup and high heels to get the attention of "Good Listeners" and the crowds eyes , WE have EARS and eyes ... WE " Music Listeners " arent looking for sweet candies behind the decks , we're looking to enjoy quality music . Furthermore , While no one is keeping track of the number of DJs working in this mostly underground industry, women are heading to DJ school in record numbers. For example, when the pre-eminent Scratch DJ Academy opened in Manhattan in 2002, the male-female student ratio was 80-20. Now, says Mike Cannady, the academy's director, "Our courses are about a 50-50 split between men and women.I think its time to admit and to get rid of this stone age thinking , and to give women the opportunity to proove themselves since they are also beating the odds getting creative and taking risks. Some produce their own mixes (DJ records) or have become mobile DJs. For me , i recognized a well known Dj-ane "SH!VA" , she is a model , a Dj and a producer . I got the chance to attend most of her "LIVE" gigs . In the DJ booth she arranges tracks within arm's length. She adjusts her sound mixer and puts on her headphones. Soon she starts mixing on the "Pioneer" or another on the two CDJS, driving US" the crowd" on our Knees at the dance floor with her intoxicating mix of quality music. She perfectly drives us to heaven with her harmonic mixing , driving our minds out of our bodies on the dancefloor , and she is conquering the " NO-1 Underground Dj-ane " in my region. Its not Adam or Eve , Pioneer or Xone , its the MuZiK and Professionalisim , so keep this spirit going .....

In an ideal world gender wouldn't be an issue, but in the meantime we will have threads like these. Which hopefully, will get out more information and make things better for all :D

Re: Chicks Can't Mix
yea i defo think there are loads of females who can't mix and get up on stage and prance about looking beautiful and trainwrecking, but unfortunately that mostly has to do with what WE buy into. a lot of people buy into a beautiful girl djing because its a beautiful girl djing. a lot of people won't care what they play like, what music they are playing, etc.

i've been going around and around with this in my head... can you name a guy dj who has gotten huge by being hot? the only one i can think of is sasha, and thats not really true because he could mix before he was a posterboy dj. and even if that person, boy or girl is hot, they still need to have something to back it up. maybe they weren't good at the start but they've gotten better.

about anja, i really don't think we can say much about her getting to where she is solely on being a female. she is a really great producer. she makes her own music and has her own label. she works hard in the industry. another would be cassy, she works hard and makes her own music. there are lots of us out there now and there are more females working in the industry than there ever has been.

if you guys like breaks really check out janette slack. she is amazing. there are girls out there who fucking kill it.
well i have to agree with u there Chloe. Anja's track's are superb. So are Magada's, Chloe's, Cassy, Ellen's.. If u ask me the females make fantastic track's for us males to play out :D

#1057255Post 63 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

I simple don't buy into this generalisation Greg, I'm sorry. Too many top-DJ's in general that are complete dipshits behind the decks, too many really good DJ's that may never make it to the position they are entitled to (behind the decks in a cool club).

There is this phenomenon with those half-dressed candy girl DJ chicks, such as Portia whatever and more of those, but that's a completely different league IMO.

#1057260Post 64 of 136

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Ok so think of your top 5 male dj's - I expect on the whole you'd think they were pretty sharp behind the decks and have a few favourite sets of theirs which are more ore less flawless...now think of your top 5 female dj's - can you say the same thing about them. I would say my favourite 5 female spinners are Ellen Allien, Magda, Smokin' Jo, Monika Kruse and Chloe - and with the notebale exception of Chloe all of the sets I've enjoyed from these gals both live and pre-recorded are poorly mixed.

In no way am i saying that there are no chicks who can mix - that would be ridiculously arrogant and unfair. I'm just sayingthat in my experience those that i have heard have been well below the male equivalent with comparable levels of experience and exposure.

If i'm missing a shitload of female talent (and I'm sure I am) please point me in it's direction...I' would genuinly like to be proved utterly wrong :)

Im sitting on the fence on this one, but good point sir! (although u clearly need to listen to more Shiva sets)

Maybe its coz DJanes are relatively new (in force anyway) and despite the balance changing, there are still way more male DJs and therefore the quality of the top boys mixing will obv be higher than the top gals.. ?

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Not too sure about the top 5 DJs analogy because statistics is working against the women here ... If you had a population of 1,000 male DJs, the top 5 would naturally have some 'standards,' it's a natural progression up the pyramid from the bottom 1,000 ... while comparitively if you had a population of 100 female DJs, you will have a more difficult time finding the same top 5 that matches your perception of the male top 5 ...

err wouldn't you? :oops::|
^ Yeah, Chloe is fucking quality and her annivesary mix is on heavy rotation in my office. Let's clarify - i'm not saying that there are no good female DJ's - of course there are, it's just that those i mentioned and other's besides are supposedly at the top of thier game, but the way they mix the majority of thier sets suggests they perhaps shouldn't be.
Agreed but you have to recognize the flip side as well...I've seen/heard some wack ass "male" sets. Most of which I was forced to pay for. Nonethless, given the female to male mixer ratio I'd say that it's pretty even.

This is a very good point, although it doens't completely overrule mine. This would be true using the figures you do, but there are clearly more than 100 female DJ's in the world. Therefore if we stick to purely statistical measurement, you would expect that out of all the female dj's in the world (several thousands proffessionals I would estimate) you would be able to select 5 who could put the majority of thier mixes together without creating an unpleasant listening experience. All I'm saying is that I can't, and while i am by no means claiming to be an authority on the subject, I think i have enough experience of listening to EDM to be able to consider my opinion at least some way to being valid

shiva, trust me....get yourself a linear fader xone 92 (i'm not a rotary fan, either) and a pioneer efx 1000 and you'll never go back.

the sound quality, layout, options...pretty much everything about the xone is better. just the ability to be able to mix pre-eq in the headphones is worth it...far, far easier to mix. the filters are also to die for. combined with the efx-1000, you can do everything you'd be able to do on a pioneer.
