Right, now that I have your attention - especially you female turntablists out there - I'll elaborate a little.

My inspiration to make such a bold (and potentially hazardous) claim has been sparked by two events this weekend; firstly I went to see Anja Schieder at Fabric on Saturday. While her tracks selection was excellent, her mixing was frankly appaling - including the worst train wreck i've ever heard at Fabric. One fuck up is of course forgivable but from my recollection every one was fairly questionable (was anyone else there to verify).

Secondly, as i write this I'm listening to Smokin' Jo's Ibiza podcast, which although not awful, is far from proficient. Great tracks again, but very dody mixing.

I know this isn't going to make me super popular (I'll be building my Shiva-shield shortly) but this just isn't good enough. Both those mentioned above are at the top of there game and should be delivering flawless or close to flawless mixes pretty much all the time. In all the times i've been to Fabric I've never heard a male DJ mix so badly. And with something like a podcast, surely the time and effort should be gone to to make it as enjoyable a listening experience as possible? Is it the case that these DJ's just wouldn't get gigs with the skills they posses if they were male? I have to say that in some cases i think this is probably true. Ellen Alliens Fabric mix for example...one of my favourite mixes but it's badly mixed, as is every set I've heard her play.

As i type, Jo completely train wrecks another...very poor.

I thought Anja was the best mixer I have ever heard in my life. Just coz you didnt 'get' what she did with that so called trainwreck doesnt mean she cant mix. You just need to grow and evolve your electronic music understanding my friend.. ;) :p

this is a very valid point in its own right!

no offense, but wants to say that some ladies are given work NOT ONLY on their dj merits??? (and i dont mean sexual favours before people get flustered round here. I just mean pretty!)

for the rest your on your own! the few ladies on here are going to eat u alive.:mullered:

oh yeah!! anyone else noticed that shiva chick is a real looker, but cant mix to save her life! :poke:;)

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

^ Yeah, Chloe is fucking quality and her annivesary mix is on heavy rotation in my office. Let's clarify - i'm not saying that there are no good female DJ's - of course there are, it's just that those i mentioned and other's besides are supposedly at the top of thier game, but the way they mix the majority of thier sets suggests they perhaps shouldn't be.

Prick. :D Let's clear this up - AndyH was there with me and screwed his face up even more than mine every time she clanged one.

Paul Okanefold and Felix da Housecat cant mix either - that doesnt mean all male DJ's cant mix. sweeping generalizations ruin conclusions. EVERYONE knows that :)

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

based on my listening sample, I agree that listening to Anja Schneider in anything except a carefully edited professional CD is a risky endeavor...lol

But I don't think it's just the chicks... I routinely hear studio and live mixes by big name DJs that are just ridiculous and not half as good as what I would be capable of doing. And I also know female DJs who can mix up a storm.

Of course, this is all getting a bit harder to discern since I oftentimes can't tell if a great performance is being put on by the DJ or his/her computer...thanks to the technology we now have, the computer could automatically cue up blippy track #693 and seamlessly bring it in, thus freeing up the DJ to fake-molest the mixer, adjust his/her scarf, pass out, etc.

Actual mixing is becoming SO uncool these days.

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

Ahhh.... What can I answer to that?

I just wished I had recorded that Marathon set I played last year in an afterhours club: It was from 4:00am till 10:00am, non-stop, on-the-fly, played 95 trx....and boy, I just wish you were there!!! 8)

Well I donno many MALE djs that can play a FLAWLESS (and mostly harmonic) 6hrs Marathon set... ;)

Anyway, you are free to listen to my sets which are LIVE sets, and soon I will be hitting you with a LIVE GIG, coz there is where the real action takes place, in front of crowds...

And PLZ, keep in ming that the ratio male/female djs is like 1 in a million...or more.

You and me both. I'm not a senseless She-Jay basher, just wanted to express an opinion I thought there was more than a grain of truth in. It's anoying that within two days a podcast and a live mix that should have been amazing were made almost unlistenable by shoddy work(wo)manship.

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

i really like anja's music and was excited to hear her also. ive found the same thing and have listened to about 8 sets. the only thing i can say in her defense is that she isn't a dj, but a producer and like james holden, maybe she will get better as time goes on. james holden did.

there are girls who can totally fucking rock it tho.

But do you see any truth in the assertion that there are female DJ's who are being booked more because they are competent (but not particularly gifted) DJ's AND they are female. As Shiva pointed out, the ratio male to female DJ's is massively skewed, so do you think the 'novelty' factor of having a female behind the decks may be influencing promoters choices more than they perhaps should? :|

yea i defo think there are loads of females who can't mix and get up on stage and prance about looking beautiful and trainwrecking, but unfortunately that mostly has to do with what WE buy into. a lot of people buy into a beautiful girl djing because its a beautiful girl djing. a lot of people won't care what they play like, what music they are playing, etc.

i've been going around and around with this in my head... can you name a guy dj who has gotten huge by being hot? the only one i can think of is sasha, and thats not really true because he could mix before he was a posterboy dj. and even if that person, boy or girl is hot, they still need to have something to back it up. maybe they weren't good at the start but they've gotten better.

about anja, i really don't think we can say much about her getting to where she is solely on being a female. she is a really great producer. she makes her own music and has her own label. she works hard in the industry. another would be cassy, she works hard and makes her own music. there are lots of us out there now and there are more females working in the industry than there ever has been.

if you guys like breaks really check out janette slack. she is amazing. there are girls out there who fucking kill it.

tbh fair to nikki, she is a TOPLESS DJ. she doesn't market herself as a dj. nor as a good dj. but a TOPLESS DJ. so of course they would book her on her looks. thats all there is.

Re: Chicks Can't Mix

^ I was expecting the Nikky one... Ahhhh.

Ok then, lets turn this thread around:

There are some djanes that do it their way, and there are others that do it in another: musically!

So, here is a live mix @ Pasha Club [Romania] - Jan 2008 (the only live gig available at the moment). But before I continue let me put you in the picture of why don't consider this mix a top of my performance. The simple reason is that I am a Pioneer djane, I use only Pioneer (all series) coz its the only brand I feel as an extention of me when I play: special effects, tweaks, breaks etc etc. And for my surprise when I got to the club in Romania I had to play on a rotative mixer that had never seen before:

So I couldnt fully feel free to perform at my best, but the gig went fine nonetheless and here is the LIVE recording of it, 3hrs+ of tracks that I don't usually share in sets and play only live... Dark & Proggy of course! ;)

This is the pic of that night:

P.S.: Few cuts here and there from the recording process.
