Turntables or CDJ's?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
Keep it real. Gotta be vinyl.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
if you are just starting out then vinyl definitely - you cant start out on CDJ's and be able to mix on turntables. Its like the difference in driving between an automatic and stick drive
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
vinyl first, evil digital after!
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
be careful... its really expensive.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
^ spoken like a non purist!!!
get him boys!!!
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
If you go vinyl, you can always get serato a little later, which means you won't really have to worry about cdj's.
They are definitely nice to have though... You don't have to go with the best if you don't have the money for cdj's too. Sure it'd be real nice to get a couple of cdj 1000's but they cost a grip. I have two cdj 100's and even though they're not the best, they get the job done for the most part.
Don't go cheap on the TT's though!!
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
vinyl costs too much.
go cdjs imo
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
cdjs. vinyl is on its way out (hate to say it). much easier and faster to get the music you want digitally.

vinyl will ALWAYS be around
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
^ yeah. i read there has been a surge in vinyl production, too.
and the sound is a world apart. digital will never be able to emulate it...
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
a couple of weeks ago my mate had a party at his house and someone brought vinyl.. my god the sounds were so lush it was unbelieveable. I mean its something that we've always known, but it is amazing how obvious it is when all you have heard is digital for so long
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
i have both, but started out on vinyl. although you can't beat the unique experience of vinyl, i'd get cdjs. less expensive and loads more accessible.

im the same way... i learned on TT's ... when i started there was no such thing as cdjs.
it may always be around, but its sooo damn expensive to buy vinyl. in todays economy, i dont see it feasible to move that way. but yes its cooler and sounds better. but imo start out with a pair of cdj 200's and a cheap mixer. and in the future move to tech's if he wants to. and if hes going to play out, most likey he will need cds

yes, but screw paying $15 a track. i'll take the $1.99 option and instand download any day of the week.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
cdjs or serato/traktor scratch.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
there's room to evolve from whatever you get, but the straight vinyl dj seems now like something to graduate to, not from. it's expensive, it's bulky, and it takes a while digging through tracks to get a feel for your style i think so that's mad bank there.
the vinyl market, far as i can tell, is for the first run releases. the djs, i would hope, are playing the fresh grooves. sounds better on good monitors or club systems but unless you're playing there...
i went cdj so could burn, check stuff, and pitch at minimal cost after startup. hell, dj a while and you'll know people with turntables they're looking to get rid of. but don't debate long, dude, get some gear and you'll love jamming however...
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
here's a genius idear....why not one of each?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
If I were starting out and had the cash I'd get a pair of technics and Traktor Scratch/Serato.
I would have said CDJs a couple months ago. However...vinyl, even time-code vinyl, is so much more fun.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
Any real dj uses turntables ...

nonsense.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
how much is serato and whats it like to use?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
There will be people using vinyl for a long time(always?), and there will be people using some sort of digital format. It seems that it's broken into those two sides. The vinyl won't change, and it will be played on 1200s. Digital on the other hand, seems as if it will just go to the computer, using programs like serrato / traktor or whatever. In my opinion, the CDJ will become obsolete in the not so distant future.

offended? nah, just shocked at such an unimformed blanket stamement.. i'm going to guess this is loaded with sarcasm ;)
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
Take the shortcut and follow the industry's evolution: Go straight to CDJs while they're still around coz most probably within few years even those ones will become "obsolete"... ;)

Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
i prefer CDj's at this point. for a few reasons.
- price
- luggage is lighter
- mixing. plain and simple it is easier to mix off CDJ's. not only is it easier, it garners better sounds and results as you can loop the tune and layer sounds at a level you cant handle on vinyl. the functions of the MKII and MKIII are wonderful. it is easier to adjust the mix as well in terms of touching the record. you can adjust in a more subtle manner. instead of mixing for say 1.5 minutes on a peice of vinyl, you can mix for a long time on CDJ's.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
lulz. the soundis better on a cdj? than on vinyl?
oh man that's a good one. wait till steve graham hears about that!

you can mix on vinyl for a long time too, well, maybe YOU can't.

you're an angry middle american arent you?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
if your turntables are in good condition, you can mix for ages on 1200's.. if they float really bad and you cant, its time to get them looked at
lol @ 88Mariner.. I dont think he is saying digital sounds better than vinyl.. i think he is saying because of the ease in layering and looping some mixes can sound better.. at least i hope thats what he means

Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
hahaha.. AYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
i think the future is vinyl-computer hybrids. CD players are reduntant with the PC/Mac. Vinyl will never go away. Not with serato.
when was the last time you saw somebody carrying a cd player around (as opposed to an ipod)?
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
the cd is going the way of the cassette tape.
Re: Turntables or CDJ's?
^^^ +1 burning cd's is a monotonous pain in the ass
