^ I guess by selling ads and publicity spaces, in addition to selling services. For example, you can't send messages to members in a group that exceeds 1000 members, you will have to pay once to do that once it exceeds that number of members....stuff like that.
Re: Facebook
^^ And selling off your details/preferences etc.
Re: Facebook
No MS didn't buy Facebook, this is old news from 2-3 months back. They might've cut a deal ah fuck it, I googled:
After losing many battles to Web behemoth Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) finally won one. On Oct. 24, the software giant prevailed in its bid for a stake in the social network Facebook. Microsoft agreed to buy a $240 million piece of the company in a transaction that values Facebook at $15 billion.
For Microsoft, the deal underscores the rising importance of online advertising. The arrangement gives Microsoft control over the placement of banner ads on Facebook outside the U.S., where about 60% of Facebook's 49 million active users reside. Microsoft had already reached agreements to sell U.S. banner ads for Facebook through 2011. "It signals an enormous vote of confidence from our largest advertising partner," Kevin Johnson, president of the Platforms & Services Div. at Microsoft, said during a conference call announcing the investment.
It's actually last year's news
MS just wants a stake in anything big and online, desperately. It's playing catchup, first with Netscape, now with Google. Ever since the internet, MS has been outmanouvered so badly and keep losing out on online opportunities.
But this deal doesn't really give MS anything, serving banner ads on Facebook is not going to give them the kinda returns that justify the money they paid out. Sad truth is, no one has worked out how to make money off social networks or relationships; that's why Yahoo is in trouble.

^ Even more than that: Yesterday I was reading an article on a local newspaper that facebook is filled with spying activities to the point the Israeli gov has recently issued new laws for their soldiers forbidding them from posting any personal details whatsoever or pics for fear of kidnapping or infiltration: A soldier was even condemned to 60 days in jail because he has posted on facebook a pic of the military base he is attached to.

It's hardly 'spying' when people are freely uploading pics and their entire personal life onto Facebook
The problem is people not differentiating between their professional and their personal lives, and things like Facebook which is the proably the no.1 time-waster in the corporate world, means the professional spill over into the personal or vice versa.
And the military dude deserved to be punished for posting said pic on Facebook, that's not something you go around posting. And why does he have a camera snapping pics in a military base to begin with?
Re: Facebook
As opposed to the Israeli government's move, the Syrian gov has totally banned facebook for the same (spying) reasons...
Re: Facebook
