Re: Your classic Essential Mix?

Have to agree with all the comments on Digweed's mix from 1999. Amazing mix, pisses all over the Bedrock disc he released based on it - I still have this on cassette tape and pull it out every now and then. So many quality tracks - all the house stuff in hour 1, and then he steps up in hour 2 with Xpander, Revolution, Cascade. Amazing mix.

BUT my classic EM is Sasha's Maida Vale set from 2005. Some timeless tracks in there e.g Sia-Breathe and Jori Hulkkonnen-Lo Fiction. I liste to this EM at least once a week.

Honourable mentions to:

All of the Oakenfold 99 world tour EM's, particularly Sydney MoShic Tong/Oakey Cream 6th Birthday 1998

#986942Post 49 of 184

Re: Your classic Essential Mix?

herre^ that Lawler EM is pretty decent I agree - but always have bad memories of it because the night it was on I was in hospital after being the victim of an armed robbery at work that day! Was more gutted about missing the set!

I notice that a great many of these sets are from 1999 to 2003. Are the members here older, or is the music not as memorable these days? Just a thought, not trying to start a "music this day is ..... " argument.

#988464Post 71 of 184

Re: Your classic Essential Mix?

you pose a great question actually.. i think there are quite a few factours. music quality, state of the scene, actual mixes

#988482Post 72 of 184

Re: Your classic Essential Mix?

2003 probably marked the start of the end of the progressive scene as we knew it (the odd noteable exceptions aside) - not a lot of decent sets were aired in 2004 (although Sasha's part of the Renaissance EM was decent), and Tong seemed to pick other producers with the onset of electro.

music isn't as memorable. when bog-standard prog-fodder evolved with extra bleeps and bloops and was made with casio keyboards, it was bad. and then they started using computers to play it too.

Compare Belfunk with COMA and you'll get what i'm talking about.

I think a lot of it has to do with sentimentalism and nostalgia too. Who's to say the people new to the music now, or getting more interested in the music now, won't look back 5yrs from now, and pick their 'classic EMs' which will be remarkably different from what we pick here.

Also depending on what phase of clubbing life you're in, we associate some of these tracks in these EMs with those unforgettable moments in the clubs.

[quote=88Mariner;581531]music isn't as memorable. when bog-standard prog-fodder evolved with extra bleeps and bloops and was made with casio keyboards, it was bad. and then they started using computers to play it too.

A lot of today's music is just what 88Mariner described, they sound flat except for a few gimmicky sounds and stuff that sound randomly thrown in to create 'texture.' They lack 'body' and groovy basslines, the basslines are just some skeleton to throw on some sounds to, as opposed to tracks which had basslines that worked on their own. The beats are boring as well.

On the other hand, there're also a lot more music coming from the minimal camp that is very textured, deep, atmospheric, and layered. What they lack in melodies or basslines, they make up for with intricacies that are very absorbing. I'm moving more from 'prog' to the deep minimal stuff cos prog is just pain boring at the moment.

i don't mean it like kills other e-mixes or has harsh sentiments towards others, it's just a really embelished way of saying 'this is dope*
