Re: God
Martin Luther King talked about human rights, here we're talking about "the not existence of a higher being", i do not see what this think has to do with the "majority tyranizes the rights of the minority-thing", one thing is believing in God and another way much diferent is to practice a religion, besides we are not changing the world with a topic that has been discussed since the begining of human kind.
most atheist talk and discuss these things because they see that our ex-republic-come-democracy is turning into a theocracy. and they see the consequences of religious doctrine mating with political power.

Re: God
^^ i agree totally. i have never used the term atheist to describe my beliefs. i simply choose not to believe and feel that anyone labelled as an atheist is looked down upon and viewed in a negative light. not believing in any form of religion doesn't mean anything other than i choose to find my own source of information and use this regarding pretty much every aspect of my life.

quite simply, i find it hard to listen to someone who tells me i am going to hell for not believing the same idealogical beliefs that __________ (insert religion here) follows, and at the same time ask me to give money to the church as well as ask me to change my beliefs so that i can then force them down everyone else's throats. nah, not into it.
I was the same way for a while but I don't see the point in keeping quiet about your beliefs when someone asks you just because you think they'll look down on you. once I realized I was near ashamed to tell people I didn't believe in God I realized that it was because they made me feel ashamed because I didn't believe in their beliefs. that's not something to be ashamed of :not me:

not ashamed, simply don't like being judged or having people look down their nose at me. my opinion is if they can't show the same respect that i give them for not following the same belief then fuck'em.

it's not that i keep quiet regarding my beliefs, it's the simple fact of the majority of people that i have these types of conversations with are usually people that either work with me or for me. in business, i have learned that it's best not to have conversations about religion or politics. (they never end well)

dear heavenly father, we would like to thank you for this thread, so that we may learn what other people's philosophies are and enjoy mild debate on your existence. . .

Re: God
I respect your right to your opinions, but it seems that what you say is 100% emotive and has zero basis as even an attempted logical argument-based discussion. As such, there isn't really anything to...discuss :what
right on. so how to argue against illogic?
Well its more of explaining trignometry to someone learning subtraction...there isnt anything to discuss...the signs and proofs are there,,, in physics and chemistry, its not about just beleiving its more of a connection that you feel once you start it, things get clearer and makes more sense signs become more obvious,,,in the beggining or end its a choice that everyone has to make and is responsible for it...so just chill to the next episode...
spooky language here. signs and proofs of what? connection to what? start what? what things? what signs? how do they become obvious? the beginning or end of what? choice between what things? empty spooky language.
I think some of the points people need to say why you should beleive, even if you dont see signs or "proof" is basically faith. Without faith, obviously you wont beleive.

What do non-beleivers think about Miracles? Call it something else, what do you think of someone having cancer and then the cancer dissapearing? What is that if not a miracle? How can one explain it scientifically?.. just luck?

Or are all "miracle stories" simply bogus?

:what
miracles don't make any sense from a theist or non-theist perspective. it's a wrong concept.

from the non-theist perspective, a miracle can simply be described as an unexpected fortunate turn of events. there are things that happen sometimes that we can't explain or predict. let's just leave it at that.

from the theist perspective, a miracle is an intervention of God. but for God to perform a miracle would require that somewhere God's plan went astray (or was wrong to begin with) and God has to set it right. but religions hold that God is infallible, so this is not possible. or, if God is everywhere, in and around everything, all-existing, all-knowing, and all-creating, there is no room for miracles.

if, instead, we say that miracles are demonstrations of God's power and are indeed part of his divine plan, then they are not in fact true miracles. furthermore, if God indeed be the all-powerful being that we describe it as, God would have no need to prove its existence to anyone through spectacle, but as simple divine revelation.

Re: God

Some will say the basic ideas stemming from religious philosophical backgrounds are the foundations for civilization, whether you believe in a god or gods, almost wrote dogs, at least you are free to choose in our virtual universe, another question to be posed does god or gods exist in cyberspace?
